I have never played Mass Effect 1 because I have a PS3. Now, Mass Effect 2 is being released in a month for the PS3 and I keep hearing great things about it. So my question is, do I need to know the story of Mass Effect 1 in order to play Mass Effect 2? Will I be lost?

Since ME1 cant be brought over to Sony (Microsoft published the original then EA bought BioWare) theres going to be an interactive comic that will explain the story of Mass Effect and also let you make some choices to bring over to ME2. If you have a 360 or PC (i got ME1 on Steam for just $5), then picking it up aint a bad idea since its great experience that tells a great story and offers good gameplay. Mass Effect 2 is truly amazing, it improves every aspect of the original pretty much and i cant wait to play it again.

You really should know the basic story of ME 1. Wikipedia it and you'll know all there is to know.

Wikipedia and Google are tools you should take advantage of. You can also do a search for videos... there should be a "Mass Effect in 5 minutes" video on youtube, gametrailers, etc.

Don't worry about not playing ME1... Bioware is including an interactive comic at the beginning of the game that is like a game generator to explain the events of ME1.

I have no doubts that digital comic will explain good amount of story/game itself but I don't believe it will have the ability to truly make you experience the choices that make ME1 such a great game.

I strongly suggest you pick it up on PC or if you can borrow your friends Xbox 360.

It's not fundamentally a must but it will make you understand all that had happen in original game going into ME2.

Don't worry too much about not knowing everything there is to know about the first game. You can read up on the races and technology ingame via the pause menu and the entire plot is summarized in one page on the Mass Effect wiki :). It's an amazing game, don't let not playing the first one ruin the experience for you :).

if you can, play it, but if you can't, bioware will have a interactive comic to explain the game.

They will have a comic book about ME1 where you will make all the needed decisions like who stays alive and who will die.Mass Effect 2 is not as great as ME1 but its still great. Also on PS3 you get all the DLC`s right of the bat.
