You have FF1, FF2, FF:CC, FFT, both Star Oceans, Brave Story, Disgaea, Jeanne D'Arc, and the Tales of games. Not great, but there are a few decent titles.
You'd probably get the best responses in System Wars. The PSP and DS forums will say their respective handhelds, so it won't be as helpful.
You'd probably be better off with a DS(I don't have one) they have more RPG's than the PSPflowersjf
I agree, no need to get the PSP and then say it collects dust because it lacks RPG games.
ds has alot of final fantasy games. but if you put them all together it wouldnt hold a candle to crisis core. with agito ff13 and birth by sleep on the way and the new phantasy star portable id go with psp. its a question of quality or quantity.ShaunyChaos
I dont know much RPG but I like your answer too :)

And how does it differ in System Wars :)

I'd have to disagree.
I'm an owner of both consoles with a library of 10-15 games for each handheld. I'm a huge PSP fan (prefered over the DS), but I'm really disappointed with the lack of quality RPGs (quality is subjective, so I'll define it as over 75% aggregate critical rating). Sure there's Crisis Core, Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean, but you'll find that the DS has plenty more to offer, especially JRPGs.
Heck, the PSP contains 5 RPGs with an 80%+ rating - only three of those are JRPGs, and the best one isn't even available in North America (Tales of Eternity), leaving just Crisis Core and Valkyrie Profile. By comparison, the DS has 12 RPGs with an 80%+ rating, 11 which are JRPGs (although, Mario and Luigi might be considered a JRPG).
Also, the DS has more then just Final Fantasy games (which I might add, they have a LOT of - 7 released in North America, all with an aggregate score above 75% according to GameRankings). The Dragon Quest series, Etrian Odyssey series, Rune Factory series, Pokemon series, and ofcourse The World Ends With You and Chrono Trigger.
Suffice to say, looking from a measurable perspective, you'll find that the DS has more critically acclaimed JRPGs to offer.
[QUOTE="NextGenAdam"]So it's the choice between a PSP and a DSi. But the thing is, I love, perhaps too much, JRPGs. Stats. Level-ups. Rolling fields. Reams of story to read. Characters who might actually develop depth. So for which games should I buy a PSP?di_sgt_barberYES. i've got every single SNES, NES, and GBA game in existence on my psp.. if you like jrpgs, you'll be in heaven. i also have chrono cross, vagrant story, grandia, and disgaea. definitely go for it.
Seeing as "every single SNES, NES, and GBA game in existence" doesn't exist for the PSP, not to mention Chrono Chross, Vagrant Story and Grandia, are you really suggesting OP gets a PSP just to hack it and pirate games?
Props on encouraging piracy, truely.
(note the sarcasm in my "voice")
The PSP has a decent amount of solid rpgs, particularly a few lengthy JRPG's.
FFT, Disgaea, Jean D'arc, Dungeons and Dragons Tactics just to name a few. Don't know much about the DSi, as I've never owned one but I do love JRPGs, and most of my gaming is done on my PSP, so take from that what ya will.
i love my psp and im pretty sure it has a wider selection of jrpgs then the ds
and if you speak japanese, its unparalleled
the ds, to me, is too limited
Well there is:
- Crisis Core
- Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth
- PoPoLoCrois
- Kingdom of Paradise
- Star Ocean: First Departure
- Star Ocean: Second Evolution
- Legend of Heroes
- Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness
- Final Fantasy Tactics: WOTL
- Final Fantasy I
- Final Fantasy II
- Final Fantasy 20th Anniversary Edition
- Jeanne d'Arc
If you are a JRPG fan you definitely must have PSP. There are tons of JRPG on PSP but most of them are not released at all in USA unfortunately. If you know Japanese no problem with that ;)
As many have said the DS/DSI has good, if not more, quality JRPG's that are available in America-- or whereever you may be. Not to say the PSP doesn't have any, it's just not as common to see anything about them compared to the DS.

Japan gets all the good jrpg
eggknight
That was the most pointless comment ever made.
It's like saying Canada gets all the good Canadian beer.
No seriously they do get all the good jrpg games, there are many good rpgs that haven't been release outside japan. Go search for them and you will be quite impress.
Don't listen to the biased comments (what else to expect? this is PSP forums). PSP SUCKS when it comes to JRPGs and judging by the recent announcements, seems like SONY doesn't care anyway. The ONLY good JRPG game on PSP is Crisis Core. Being a huge JRPG fan (basically I only play JRPGs), there are only two reasons I haven't sold my PSP for a DS:
1. I can convert all my PS1 ORIGINAL (no, I'm not a pirate) discs to play on PSP (including: FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, Xenogears, Grandia, Persona 2). To those who think that is actually pirating: If SONY and you think I'm gonna pay for a game I already own, you're stupid.
2. I'm waiting for Final Fantasy Agito XIII.
No matter what, I won't sell my PSP (just too much fun and nostalgia) but I've started saving for a DS.

I don't think you understand my point. You're saying Japan gets all the good Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs). Clearly, that's because they originate from Japan.
I'm well aware and "impress" by Japanese RPG releases, having imported games from Play-Asia.

And how is your post not a bias DS fanboy bit?
Theres obviously great JRPGs on PSP, not as many as the DS, sure. But saying that the only good JRPG is crisis core is just as untrue as anything else I've read in this thread..
There are tons of quality JRPGs for the PSP unlimited in Japan. The DS is limited and most of the RPGs are kiddy and have bad gameplay+graphics.
If you know Japanese, the PSP is definitely for you. If you don't know it, and you want quantity instead of quality (for the most part), get the DSi.ROK3RO
As I explained earlier in this thread, there is a lingering misconception that the RPGs on the DS are more quantity then quality. This is completely untrue, unless the only measure of "quality" is graphics. The DS surpassed the PSP in both quantity and quality games. This is not a subjective statment, but a statement based on collective critical rankings of RPG games on both the DS and PSP, according to aggregate ranking sites like GameRankings and Metacritic. Critical rankings aren't perfect, but they're much more accurate then people who own one console or the other and boast about it's superiority
There's also a bunch of promising ones coming later on this year. Two that come to mind right away are Crimson Gem Saga and the remake of the original Persona, now THAT'S one to look forward to. Yeah, I'm finding that the PSP is great for JRPGs.

Same. I just got Dissidia: Final Fantasy from Play-Asia and got it last Saturday. :) I will definitely import more.[QUOTE="ROK3RO"]

Why don't you go ahead and reread it, but before it why don't you learn to become literate first. Also I have the ability to think for myself so I don't need some critic site to think for me.
I use to have a DS and the gameplay sucked, not only that, but there are barely any JRPGs that looked fun. Sure, Americans like DS more, but that's
only because less PSP games are being imported from Japan.

I don't like fanboys. They never know what they're talking about and are very irritating.

"i have a bet, if you'll take me up on it, that the DS will have twice as many A, AA, AAA games in 2009 on GameSpot as PSP.
So, DS has 10 A, 3 AA, 2 AAA for a total of 15 A, AA, AAA games
PSP has 1 A, 3AA for a total of 4 A, AA, AAA games. 15 to 4. any takers?
on Metacritic DS has 31 A, AA, AAA games in 09 and PSP has 9 A, AA, AAA games in 09."
I copied this out of someone's sig. Take it how ever you want.
There are some pretty good titles in this genre knocking around on the PSP. I'm currently having a great time working my way through Star Ocean: Second Evolution, which I think will be up your street (more menus and stats than you can shake a stick at! :))
LoL why do you guys still argue, cuz it looks that the guy who asked the question havent looked in this thread after he created it!!

If he pirates NES and SNES games who does it hurt? Its not like those games are being made anymore and buying them off ebay won't do Nintendo any good either.Honestly, you couldn't go wrong with either. Based solely on jRPG, and I know I'm going to get flamed, but the DS is the better choice.
