When I bought my PS3, it didn't have the full 60GB. When I went to System Information, it said 47/55 GB. I didn't even use it yet. And its 47 over ***55***. What should I do? Should I return it?

Yes, it okay. The same thing happens when you buy hard drives. They advertise the amount of GB using a different system measuring bytes (1000 bytes in a KB instead of 1024 bytes in KB). You could technically call that false advertising, but I know on the box of HDD you buy at the store it says somewhere on the box (usually in tiny print) that that is how they are measuring in. Sneaky devils aren't they? :P

As for the 47gb thing, sometimes games store stuff on the PS3 and sometimes other stuff just takes up space on it. It's normal. If you got another one it be exactly the same way.

Have you never owned a computer?  Some of it is taken up by formatting. Some of it is taken up by the firmware.  Its normal.  a 20 gig xbox 360 only has 13 gigs of usable space.

Sneaky indeed. My 360 promised 20gb, yet I only got something like 12gb.

This is normal- as mentioned before they measured the space of the unformatted drive at 1000 MB/ Gig instead of the proper 1024. That brings down the actual size to 55 GB after formatting. System data takes up a part of that space as well, giving us 47 GB to actually use overall. This same thing happens when buying computers- they always quote the space using the unformated capacity but actual usable space is lower. Relax and enjoy the system.

its just like if you get a 4GB thumb drive and it actually has 3.8GB available or PC hard drives or even blank cd's. relax. lol. the space that's taken up is the OS and pre-installed stuff.

60 GB is the calculated size of the hard drive based on the sectors of the internal disks. Just like in Windows, the way that the drive is formatted causes the actual full size of disk space to be less than what it's labeled as. It's bullcrap advertising in a way, the drive DOES have that much space, but the file systems of today aren't much different than Windows 95, ergo they're crap.Supposedly in the future, with Windows anyway, their new file system will allow for the full advertised space of a hard drive to be used, but I would never count on that happening with Sony. I was a bit miffed that after making a 10 GB partition for linux, I only get 130 GB of the 'remaining' 150 GB of the drive I installed, but then again I'll probably never use that much space either.

Another thing, remember that over 90% of 360 owners that have a hard drive have a measly 20 GB (13 usable from the getgo). So with 40+ GB free in an overall better system you're still ahead of most of the pack - except me, my PS3 is better.

Its okay. The space that was used was occupied by the updates and programs that was preinstalled in you Playstation 3. Everyone else is like that. Even your computer is like that. For example, people sayyour computer has200gb but when you open up your computer's profile and stuff it will say like 196gband then its like 180/196 gb. The reason why they give customers an approximate number of gigabytes is, becauseall hard driveshave differentsizes in space. Plus by giving customers an approximate number of space it can decieve people, which then makes them believe it has a lot of space. So lets say for example, if you bought 4.5 pounds of rice from someone and it was supposed to be 5 pounds do you think you would be happy with that. No. Since you wouldn't like that and that you will get mad, they might as well try finding ways of making you believe that its actually 5 pounds. Nothing is always perfect. Just try to stick with it.
