I just started getting into the Metal Gears series from the constant talk about Metal Gear4 coming for the PS3.  The trailers look amazing,  So befire the new game comes out, I am kind of working backwards to get a feel for the game.

I just got Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence, Sick Sick game, took alittle while to get use to with the camera and always hitting x to choose but it is circle, but I really like it.  My Question is, IS Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence the same as Metal Gear snake eater?? I keep hearing 2 different titles.  And what is Metal Gear #2, is it Solid Snake, Sons of Liberty, Guns of the Patriot???

I like the camera style with Subsisitence, Are there any other Metal gear games that use that camera angle, And what is the other Metal Gears offered on disk 2, It has those really old ones and then Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake, is that 1 worth playing.

Yeah, that's a good start to the series.  Subsistence is the same as Snake Eater, just with a 3rd person camera.  After you beat this one, try going for Metal Gear Solid 1, if you have a Gamecube, you can play the Twin Snakes, that is the updated version of the original Playstation version.  After that, go for Metal Gear Solid 2 : Sons of Liberty; MGS4 is a continuation of that game.  Also, Metal Gear Portable Ops (for the PSP) is a continuation of the Snake Eater/Subsistence story.  So yeah, there is a lot of story to be told within the series.  If you want, you can also play the original versions of Metal gear 1 and 2 that came with Subsistence, it's full of addidtional information that is often overlooked, and introduces some interesting characters.

Thanks for the info, But I have a very hard time playing with that overhead camera, and why do they have 2 Metal Gear solid twos. They got the Metal Gear2 Solid Snake on the 2nd disk and then Metal Gear 2 Sons of Liberty.  Were any the games done over with the new camera angle in subsistence?

MGS 3 Sub's camera is 1,000,000 times better then any of the previous installments. Imo it adds so much to the realism of the game.

If your using the 3rd person camera, where you can move it around freely, I'd suggest not using that, because MGS1 and MGS2 don't have that type of camera.

In a way I agree with him. It does take away from the feel of MGS but it's a nice change. It wouldn't have worked in MGS2 though.

the games are named different like meta gear and Metal Gear Solid so they are all differnte. and just to add on with MGS3 Subsistence is that it has a kick ass online multiplayer.

And I just got to the part where you Meet with Eve in the cave, how much more gaming to I have in store??TJSAGE
[SPOILERS I guess] So you got out of jail then, did you get to play the nighmare mini game? If you load the auto save from after the torture scene you'll get to play Snake's nighmare. Anyway, yes there's still a few hours left, a few much faster paced levels (like movies it begins slowly and then steadily gets faster for then to jump into a climax followed by the low down). Anyway, the second time you play it you'll notice that you missed tons of aspects in the first playthrough. NB: Sorry about the spelling

Yeah I can already tell I missing alot of stuff, so far everything had been cool and the boss fights have been cool, the flame gave me problems and the camo guy because I think I did not have the thermal googles, but does anyone know why I have an arrow stuck in my  chest, cant take it out, it just stays there with all the different camos on.

Play Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater/Subsistence, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of the Liberty. MGS3 is actually a prequel.

To answer your question fully:

MGS3: Subsistence is an upgrade to MGS3: Snake eater. Only difference is the all new camera system, which is VERY different and unique in all of the Metal Gear games ever released. So, try not to get too used to it if you want to backtrack with the older versions.

The second disc includes two older games, Metal Gear (1987 i think) and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1990?).

Oh yeah, you have about 4-6 hours remaining if i remember right, but they are also the most exciting parts of the game.

First it was Metal gear solid for the PS, and Twin Snakes on the GC as a remake of solid (MGS1). Then it was Metal Gear solid Guns of the Patriots (MGS2) (might as well check out the Subsistence version for extra content) Then its Snake Eater (MGS3) and the version you have is better cuzz it has more content than snake eater. And about the old ones, play them only if you want to know some more about snake and if you like the old stayle gameplay.

firstly you play the games in the order they were made mgs1 mgs2 sons of liberty mgs3 snake eater then when you can get it mgs4 (all games have a extra release, a special edition..mgs1 had "vr missions", mgs2 had"substance" and mgs3 had "subsistence"....all of whcih are exactly the same as the orgianl game....just more.) people are telling you to play mgs3 first, due to it being set before the others (1964) whcih is stupid. its written as a prequel half of the references you wont understand, nor will you understand many of the jokes. although youve already done that. when you get round to playing mgs1, give it a chance, remember its a old game. and dont play the gamecube version....its awful.

Nice breakdown, but so far I am loving Subsistence, but I dont think I can ever get use to the over the head camera angle the others offer.   Its easier I guess if you played those older games when they were released.  But as of now I dont think I will play the other metal gears even though they sound great, that camera angle just drives me crazy.

Dude, don't worry too much about the bird's-eye view camera; it only sucked in Snake Eater because most of the game took place outside, whereas MGS 1 and 2 are mainly in indoor environments.  Plus, the radar is more advanced making it easier to spot and sneak up on enemies.  Really, I urge you to give them at least a rental, or borrow from from a friend for a test drive, you won't be dissapointed.  :)

Your missing from the order they were made, the 2 original metal gear games. Also the cube version is not awful and i suggest anyone getting into the games today to go for that one as it contains many elements from mgs2 such as similar graphics and a lot of snakes moves. I admit mgs1 on ps1 is better than the cube version and nothing can take away its charm but the cube version is more up to date in presentation and still keeping with the times. Also the famous tunes from ps1 mgs only feature at the end of the cube version for some reason.

Barack Obama will be your president in 2008!! The first black man in the white house, go figure. The economy will go into a recession, but gas prices will plummet!! The grass or gas, in this case, is always gassier on the other side! Any more questions?

IF you started with MGS3 i suggest that you follow the timeline it goes like this.

1.- MGS3 Snake Eater / Subsistence

2.- Metal Gear Solid: Portable OPS ( its for the PSP but if you dont have one i suggest you go read wikipedia)

3.- Metal Gear ( this game comes in the MGS3 subsistence, its the first metal gear, if you dont want to play it you can go to wikipedia

4.- Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (the second metal gear, this was released in 1989 and it is on the MGS3 subsistence as well)

5.- Metal Gear Solid ( for PSX)

6.- Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of liberty / Substance ( i suggest you get the substance edition its a little hard to get it but its worth it)

Great that your playing MGS3 its a godly game , pay extra attention to the ending and hope you like it.

Hope you play all the others and realize that its THE Best saga in the history of Video Games.
