Hey all, im fairly new to the playstation family and I just wanted to say how impressed I am with MGS4.. The story just seams so imaginative and well thought out that it doesn't even seem like its a story from your average game.. I also can feel the emotions on the characters unlike most games I've played.. With that being said, are all the metal gear games this good? Cause I haven't played a metal gear game before and I would like to know more about the characters and the story. What are your guy's recommendations on the other games in the series?

All the games are good:) MGS3 is the best one, imo. You should get the essential collection, it contains MGS1&2&3 and Metal Gear 1&2 on the MGS3 disc.

I just never got into the MGS series. I am going to give it another try though by playing The Twin Snakes for the Gamecube. Figure I'd play the "original" with the current style of gameplay.

YES! If you have not beaten MGS4 I suggest you stop playing it and play the other three first :P. My favorite is MGS4, and my least favorite is MGS2. That being said, they are all amazing games. MGS is a series I won't soon be forgetting ;).

YES! The others are actually better, if you can believe that (though I do love 4).

OPINION ALERT! :P

I don't know how you could say others are better, but I guess that is just me. They are all close, but MGS4 fixes any control problems, has the best graphics, most varied gameplay, wondeful and varied environments, most story, and ties it all together. Like I said though, all of them are amazing. When I can play a PS1 game and enjoy it today as much as I did that says something.

No, but you would be able to play MGS1 because all PS3s support PS1 games. But I will warn you, once you finish the first one you will hunger for more and you will probably end up buying a PS2 so you can play them all haha. MGS is without a doubt the greatest series of games I have ever played.

AH MGS, the best series with the most flashed out characters. Seeing as how its June I have started MGS4 up again and your right TC the story is amazing, the conclusion is epic and I bet if you actually play the previous 3 titles you will appreciate the story and characters in MGS4 a whole lot more. All MGS titles have amazing stories that tie together well, some difficult to understand like MGS2 but others like MGS3 are more approachable, in my opinion MGS3 is still the best in term of story so you should check that out when you can. MGS1 story is also superb, and if you don't mind the 32 bit graphics definitely give it a go too, you can in fact find the game in PSN store. MGS2 takes place before MGS4 and although the story is pretty convoluted at first it is understandable and important in understanding the events of MGS4

I only played the first one. Before I play MGS4 I want to play 2 and 3 but I dont have a PS2. Will the PS3 ever get MGS Collection? Is it worth buying PS2 just for 3 games?

Well of course it's my opinion. Metal Gear Solid, the first one, is my absolute favorite game. I actually just finished playing it again. I liked MGS4 a lot, it's a beautifully built game and the experience definitely hasn't changed at all, it just doesn't hold the same value for some reason. I think MGS is my favorite though because of the view. I prefer it to the third person perspective.

@Virus1000 We're almost all but guaranteed a Metal Gear Solid Collection before MGS: Rising come out. I would put money on an E3 announcement.

I'm not an expert on this topic but I wouldn't do that. There isn't any official PS3 to PS2 emulator and anything you find online might end up getting you in trouble. I would just wait. There's a small chance (albeit a very small one) that Sony will discontinue PS2 and give PS3 owners an emulation patch come E3. Actually, not so much a chance as it is a hope :P

Anyway, yes, the MGS series is as good as 4. My personal favorite is the very first one. Oh the nostalgia 4 had... but erm, saying that contains spoilers.

At the very least you can download the first one on the Playstation Network and it's still fun. Just recently played through it again myself and the story and characters held as much weight as they did over a decade ago. After playing that one then you'd be better equipped to decide if you want to fill the gaps between 1 & 4 by getting a ps2.

I've finished this game last weekend, it's amazing how far a game can go when it's so well developed.

I played MGS1 and skipped 2 & 3 only because I don't have a PS2.

Now I'm playing MGS4 in big boss hard, and I'm trying to beat the game with 0 kills/alerts, just finished act 1.

I can't believe Kojima says videgames are not art, when the MGS series to me are just the opposite, how many games can come close to a masterpiece like this?

In my opinion, Metal Gear Solid 3 has the best story. Metal Gear Solid 2 is pretty good as well but it's more convoluted and strange than the other Metal Gears but good at the same time.

for me the 2nd is the worst story wise =S but its still good, better than other games that are said to have good stories, if you wanna play them MGS1 & 2 game out for PC, so by now, 2010, yep freeware (geeze i hope i dont get mod for that) has for the 3 its super cool too, for me its hard to decide what betwen 1 3 4 is the best, i love them all for different reasons. PS. if you decide to get them, play them in other despite 3 being a prequel

Easily my favorite game series of all-time (right next to Zelda and Grand Theft Auto :D). Definitely pick up the Essential Collection that has MGS1-3 for PS2. MGS4 is the best, imo.

That is a lie! lol I own the Essential Collection and it does not have the two MSX2 versions.
