When I completed the game it said it said it took me 17 hours to finish
over the span of many months
because I don't sit and play any one game for hours straight like a weirdo
If you skip all the cut scene, the game is prebably 3-5 hours. if you watch everything and take your sweet time find items it will be a little over 19 hours.
like others have said, you won't understand the story if you haven't played the first 3 metal gear solid games (metal gear solid, metal gear solid 2: sons of liberty, and metal gear solid 3: snake eater). some of the stuff they talk about in metal gear solid 4 is further explained in one of the first 3 metal gear solid games. i recommend playing the first 3 before you play the 4th. you can get the first metal gear solid game off of the playstation store under ps1 classics
Well, maybe i'm really slow but it took me about 16-18 hours. I'd say about 50% of that is cutscenes and 50% is actual gameplay.
I played through MGS4 without playing any of the others in the series. I was really lost about the story, but I still enjoyed the game a lot.
Later, I got the Metal Gear Collection and played them all in the right order and played through MGS4 yet again and had a much better experience.
Really depends if you want to invest the time to complete all those older games or not.
at least you have to play mg2 when it come to talk about the pratriots.there are a lot of caracters showing up there ...they was on the previous game mg1.
you have to play mg1 if you can because of the explaination of 'les enfant terrible' projet.
the genome soldier and a lot of thing.mg1 and 2 should be played to fully enjoy the cutscene of mg4
story is alittle complex. its a pretty long game, id say 20 hrs on the first playthrough if you are a skilled MGS player, could take longer if you arent used to MGS. MGS4 was my first MGS game but i loved it so much. after i beat it i went online and searched up the story, replayed the game for the heck of it lol, and understood it completly. i cant wait to get the MGS collection.
anyways i think you should get the game its awesome and is very cheap. it didnt get a 10/10 for nothing. and just as a reference, the game may seem boring and bad at the beginning but it gets so good later on.
watch these videos it explains every game in the MGS series and will help you understand the story before you play MGS4.

Since when does story matter. Mario's been saving the princess for 25 years.

well it doesnt matter in mario games because they arent built around a story, i swear everytime i beat the game and see peach im like "oh yea i was supposed to save her" lol. however MGS relies heavily on story.
That is a really ignorant comment.Since when does story matter. Mario's been saving the princess for 25 years.

I got an idea. How you buy MGS1 on PS1 now, it holds up surprisingly well. Then on November 8th, buy the HD collection for MGS2, MGS3, and PW. Then buy MGS4. You don't need to do this, but to get the absolute most of this, you should play them in order. I did this back in 2008 and it made MGS4 1000x more satisfying. It's a classic by itself, but with everything else preceding and having that understanding, it put it in a league of its own.Chaos_Bladez
he's right
Will i understand the story as i havnt played any of the previous games 9x1NO...easiest answer I will give all day. There are people that have played MGS 1-4 + the PSP games that still don't get the story. That doesn't mean you won't enjoy the game though...just you won't get as much out of it. Personally, I would buy MGS 1 off psn and the upcoming collection and play them first.
