I played MGS4 and loved it!! but i would like to know more of the story behind everything, so would it be a good idea for me to play 1-3 or are they not just as good as they used to be? Do you think i would enjoy them? And are they necessary to buy or was everything told in MGS4?

Well most things were told. They have the MGS Database on PSN to back everything up. It can all be read. But if you really liked the story, then I would say yes, go for the previous 3 games. You could get the Essentials Collection. It's more for the experience of the story. It's not needed, but it's a better addition to reading it all.

Definitely must buy games... see if you can get the Essentials Collection.

BTW, I always tell everybody to play the first 3 games first (play them in order btw) so the story in 4 makes waaaaaaaaay more sense. So I guess you already spoiled some parts of the previous games.

I recommend buying the esential colection and play through the other games, the gameplay has changed a lot since then so you might find it hard to get used to after playing MGS4 if you are new.

MGS4 was a great game but my favorite is MGS3 which a prequel it is a great game and so are MGS1/2.

Must play IMO if you want to know more about the story. Reading the Database is good but playing the games is better IMO.

If you liked MGS 4, then you will likely enjoy 1-3. If you want to get a bit of background story in the meantime, head on over to youtube and check out Metal Gear Solid Saga Vol 2. It's a 15 minute (or thereabouts) video that will give you a very good idea about the story leading up to MGS4.

Yes you will enjoy them, and you will realize how awesome the whole saga is when you do play them. You might have loved MGS4 but you will appreciate MGS4 more if you go back and play the other ones including Portable Ops on PSP which has an awesome gameplay mechanic that is not featured in other MGS games. I'd HIGHLY recommend buying the Essential Collection and play through the games. The saga will blow you away. MGS4 alone is not enough. Man you're so lucky because experiencing each of the chapters the first time is the best thing in the franchise. I wish I could erase my memory and go back and play through the saga again because the first time is always mind frickin' blowing. Don't forget to download the "Database" from the store, it's free and it's the best thing Kojima and team could offer to Metal Gear fans because this thing is REALLY detailed and you'd appreciate the series and Hideo Kojima more for what they've given us for the past 20 years. The Database covers the whole storyline(with backstory) of the 20 years old game ever since it was introduced in 1987 with Metal Gear until MGS4 release. My favourite download from the store to be honest. Man all I can say is enjoy and I'm really happy for you. Seriously best experience if you'd ask me. Take care and good luck.

And that was a post by Hideo Kojima!!!!!................sorry i mean AgentH

I just finished MGS for the first time. Its painfully dated visually and in control scheme but the story is still top notche, the boss encounters are well done, and the gameplay overall is still pretty good. Though it didn't have the same impact it would of 10 years ago.

if you really like mgs 4, you have to try and play mgs 1, 2 and 3 to really get the story... reading those databases arent that much fun. in mgs 1, the graphics arent that good, but it aint bad as well... that is where you met the likes of meryl, akiba, col. campbell, grey fox aka cyborg ninja aka frank jaeger, liquid snake, psycho mantis, sniper wolf, vulcan raven, metal gear rex, also your first meeting with otacon. in mgs 2, you'll play as solid snake in the 1st part, then a not yet cyborg raiden, first encounter with vamp, the emergence of ocelet with liquid's arm, and metal gear ray. in mgs 3, play as big boss before he became big boss, meet the boss and his gang, col. volgin, a young ocelot, the shagohod, and of course big mama eva isn't that interesting enough for you? if you don't play em, you would be missing a whole lot of mgs experience!
