[QUOTE="AgentH"]The game runs natively at 720p 60 fps. It upscales to 1080p which isn't native.mongo_14
60 FPS is still impressive. with that i think they could have done 1080p at 30 FPS. correct me if i'm wrong.
60fps is def the better option!
i hope its native 720p bc the beta was 665p and just upscaled to everything else

tru im sure the pixel counters will have answers for us tommorrow. btw i think 30 FPS would be ok, because you never really have to move around at high speeds.

good point, this game would be fine at 30fps
I do not have MGS4 yet (picking it up in a couple hours), however I can tell you right now many PS3 titles can run at 1080p if you FORCE it to. It is not the native resolution, it is only upscaled. All you need to do is go to the display settings and uncheck all the other options besides 480p and 1080p.
The question is, does it natively run at 1080p (as in, the actual disk boots and starts with a 1080p signal) despite the user's display settings enabling "all" resolutions including 720p?
Ladies and Gentlemen, I'd like to proudly announce that Metal Gear Solid 4 runs at a native resolution of 1080p. Rejoice PS3 owners! Aside from Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, and NBA 08, and METAL GEAR SOLID 4 is also 1080p. knicknut17
WRONG
The pre rendered FMV cutscenes are, maybe. No confirmation on that yet.
The game itself is Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriot = 1024x768
http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=46241
Ninja Gaiden: Sigma = 1280x720 (has weird scaling to support 1080p) not 1080p, 720p scaled
GT5 Prologue = 1280x1080 (2x AA) - garage/pit/showroom is 1920x1080 with no AA or 1280x720 with 4xAA
NBA 08 is 1080p though. So is Ridge Racer 7.
Also some arcade games are.
Marvel UA supports 1080p but it runs about 15fps w/ it which is unplayable. 720p is what it really is.
Other than that though. No games except the cross platform EA Sports (Fifa Street, NBA Homecourt) & Virtua Tennis 5 are.
Do you think forcing a PS3 game like MGS4 to run at 1080p affects performance, or is it purely a cosmetic change? Things like jaggies are more hidden through the upscaling for example, and environments may look more washed out?
What resolution do you guys prefer to run your games in, if they support 1080p upscaling? I've done it with GTA4 and Uncharted, but I honestly can't tell the difference in Uncharted, while GTA4 vehicles have less jaggies in 1080p mode.

It really all depends on the game. Since the PS3 doesnt have a real scaler (the Horizontal stretcher is very menial); the Cell has to do all the scaling.
Some games it hinders the performance and is only added for people who's TVs dont have a scaler or who's scaler sucks or who's TVs only accept 1080i signals (most early HDTVs only do).
For example, GTA 4 1080p upscaling doesnt effect its performance; but it's a very simple bilinear scale & most good TVs will have better internal scaling so it's better to use 720p. In a game like Drake's Fortune, running 1080i incurs a performance hit, so unless you cant use 720p it's better to run at 720p.
If it's a game like Rainbow Six Vegas then it actually looks much worse at 1080 because of how horrible the scaling is.
Best thing to do is just try it between the two versions and decide for yourself. Since it doesnt use a dedicated scaler; each game will have differeing quality of scaling as well as different performance hit. Trial & error are the only way.
Isnt GTA4 1080p?9mmSpliff
Nope. http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=137829&page=2
First things first. Xbox 360 runs at full 720p (1280x720), whereas the PlayStation 3 code takes a 20 per cent hit, being natively rendered at 1152x640 before being software-upscaled.
Both versions offer upscaling to 1080p though
http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=137829&page=3
1080i/1080p SupportBoth versions of the game have support for 1080i and 1080p monitors, even though the actual output is being scaled up from the base resolution (640p for PS3, 720p for Xbox 360). In the case of PlayStation 3, the effect only kicks in at all if 720p is not activated on the XMB, the implication being that Rockstar is happier with your screen handling the resizing work. Certainly, the lower resolution and (dare I say it) 'jagginess' are exaggerated in the scaling process, which isn't particularly good.
On the plus side, while software upscaling more often than not results in a drop in frame-rate, the refresh rate of the PlayStation 3 version of GTA IV is barely affected, regardless of whether 1080i or 1080p is selected.
We're on far more familiar ground with the Xbox 360 version of the game in that it's following the usual form of handing off the scaling duties to the ATI GPU. That being the case, it actually looks pretty good. While the texture dithering problem is still clearly apparent, the scaling does help to smooth off the effect a touch, meaning that the apparently 'clinical' look has had the edge taken off. More than that, the ATI chip works particularly well with an anti-aliased image to process, and as GTA IV supports that, the overall effect is fairly pleasing.
Also worth noting is that both versions have proper, non-letterboxed 4:3 support for standard definition screens, and 360 even has 5:4 compatibility for those running their consoles connected to non-widescreen LCD monitors.
You can see a few examples of how the game looks upscaled on both formats in our upscaled 1080p comparison gallery.

Thanks for the detailed feedback Djc8a3Pgh8syv (odd name btw, and hard to type!), I usually leave my games at default, and let my TV (a Sony Bravia 40" 1080p screen) do the upscaling. GTA4 seems to be the only exception : I like the blurry, jaggi-less effect of the 1080p upscale.
