MGS 4, should I play the other ones first?

I never FINISHED an MGS game, I got about halfway through MGS 2 and it was awesome, but my friend asked for it back.

What do you guys think? is there any that i should play over others? or is it best I just play them all? i heard the 3rd one wasn't so great.

The devs say that they have included backstory in MGS4 for those that have not played the previous games.... but I would recommend playing them. If only for the fact that they are the best games in video game history.

:|.....hideo kojima specifically put it in that order so you WON'T get confused.......

The first one will give you then main setting and story of MGS

The second one will have many characters and pieces of the story that will be in MGS4

The third one answers a whole bunch of un-answered questions and furthur developes the story left by MGS2, dispite being a prequel

In conclusion, to enjoy MGS4 to the fullest, you should play the other ones.

OK I understand the PSP MGS game does add to the story but let's be realistic, it isn't that important to the story, otherwise it would be called MGS4 and this one coming up would be MGS 5, so don't go telling me it's all that necessary to play in order to understand whats going on in MGS4. Theres a reason why the console MGS's are numbered, it's cause they are alll the only ones essential to the story kojima is telling. The PSP game was like a spin off or again, something that just played off the main series. FreewayScruff

YES for crying out loud lol ...the psp is version is important to the series its not a spin off or some generic story!!!! its a big part of the MGS story...................GAWD!

if you plan getting MGS3, get Subsistence. u can control the camera, which improves the game-play experience.
