I read on deepdicount.com that they have MGS: Essentials for the PS2 for 28.99. I just got the MGS PS3 bundle and can finallt play PS2 games. Is this set worth it or should I buy GoW 1 & 2 since I never got to play them. THanks

Well, fyi, that essentials collection is $30 everywhere, just in case you did not know. I would say, get the collection, because it will fill you in on things hapenning in MGS4. Plus, you get an extra game for ten dollars less than buying the two GOW games. :)

gert the MGS essentials pack. I am playing MGS3 at the moment then i will start on MGS4. Playing the games will be much better for filling you in on the story, will give you some practise on how to play MGS4 and so on.

Plus if you play MGS4 and see a character, you will fight them and that will be it. If you have played the other games though you will see a character, and think "hey thats the one from MGS (1,2 or 3)"

It will just make the game better. They are great games, even MGS1 is.

I am not sure if they still have it but amazon was selling it for like 25 bucks a few days ago I think. It is definitely worth it to replay the games or get em if you don't have them. I bought it even though I had 2 and 3 just so I could get my own copy of 1. Reading the database and playing the games are not the same. The database serves more like a refresher for people that already like the games. Why? cause it's sooo darn text heavy. If you're not already familiar with the games or some of the characters you'll prolly get bored reading it.

the MGS Essentials is great for getting "up to speed" on most of the story for the MGS franchise. Though if you want the proper story line, it goes a little like this IIRC: Metal Gear Solid 3 PS2 Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops PSP Metal Gear NES Metal Gear 2 NES Metal Gear Solid PS1 Metal Gear Solid 2 PS2 Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 So may be worth getting a PSP and a Wii to get the full access then (PSP for MGS: PO, then the Wii to play the NES ones via Virtual Console).

MGS3 Subsistence has MG 1 and MG2. There was never a NA released version of MG2 until Subsitence, so an appearance of it on the VC is pretty unlikely with the stream of JP only titles.

YES get the Essentials Collection and play through them. You'll be glad you did. 30 dollars is not that bad a hit considering, this is the only way to get a new MGS1 and a new MGS2, since i was finding it incredibily hard to find a new one. 30 dollars for 3 stellar games is definately worth it. But I must say if you can save up some money ALSO get GoW 1 - 2, they should both be greatest hits from my recollection, so that should be 20 bucks each, so 70 bucks (price of a new game sometimes these days) gets you 5 amazing games.

Thats the storyline, but you should definately play through them, the way they came out. ie. 1,2,3,PO(PSP) and if possible, play MG1 and 2 before any of those.

id say no, MGS3:Subsistence is a much better game than the original MGS3 as they brought in the same camera used in MGS4 which makes the game twice as good to play.

The essentials pack comes with the original MGS3,, go to EB/Gamespot and look for them used.

The MGS Essential Collection Contains:

  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Subsistence
  • Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence
Which in my opinion is worth buying, especially since it's only 30 bucks.

But make sure you play them in order ( mgs1, mgs2, mgs3 ) or you'll miss a big part of the ending in mgs3.

Worth buying if you want to play MGS4 I guess, but I would get God of War 1 and 2 if I had to choose.

Yea nav is right. But the mgs3 doesn't have the second disc persistance which comes with mg1,mg2, i think the secret theatre and some monkey vs snake missions.

if you didn't play the old metal gears when they came out...theres a good chance ur gonna find them unplayable...but from the sounds of it, ur pretty new to gaming? yes/no...so...hmm...thats a toughy actually...both good ideas.. if you really wanna know story for mg...then essentials...if you dont care about the story...gow is a better choice...

If you haven't played any of the previous MGS games yet, definately pick it up. A great deal.

Last week CircuitCity had it for 24.99, I got it and finished MGS1 and MGS2 now I"m playing MGS3 before going forward to MGS4. Totally worth it, but I miss my life outside my house.
