MGS series=best of all time??

I recently placed mgs4 and decided to go back to the earlier ones. All I can say is...well nothing. There are no words. I just finished mgs1 from the essentials collection, and after beating that and reading the mission briefings from Metal Gear and Metal Gear: Solid Snake, there's just no game series even close to this. It's so perfectly involved, in an almost realistic sort of way, where everything in it seems almost possible, and the overhanging thoughts of nuclear war, "warrior's blood", and many other themes feel fantastic. It's also great how it all fits too, like Kojima planned every step from the beginning, like how *spoilers* in mgs4 you find the Patriots control everything, including Snake's very first missions to destroy Metal Gear. It's just insanely fascinating; can't think of anthing better. That's my little rant for the day...

The MGS series doesn't even rank in my top 5 of all time. Not even close, to be honest.

all 4 games were a 9-10, so yea it has to be the greatest series of all time

It's a great series, but I'm not sure if it's the best of all-time. I would have liked it a bit more if they had taken the gameplay of MGS4 and used that for all of the games in the series. Maybe not making those other games all-out action games, but at least taking that camera angle and using that instead of the fixed camera from MGS1-3.

I'm not trying to start a flame war i'm just wondering what you guys think is better. To me it has the best story line continued throughout a series i've ever seen

If your talking about continous storyline, then yes, its one of the best ever. If your talking a series in general, then no.. Zelda, final fantasy, mario are just a few other series that FAR eclipse mgs in terms of total sales and general fans.

Not taking anything away from mgs though, i LOVE the series, and is definately in my top 3 fav series, but it wont be in everyones *shrugs*

MGS yes is definitely got to be in the top 3 material and definitely top 10....GTA is up there to...RE is as well....Final Fantasy....those are probably the best series of games of all time...i guess you could even add the Mario in there to nothing could do quite what Mario did for nintendo...without mario what would nintendo be....well yeah zelda is a pretty sick series as well so add that in there. but you get what im saying right??? all those game series are epic...and do something other series dontsee now this is how you compare...can you guys instead of saying no way or hell yeah...say why? and if this isnt top 10 "for you" who cares its talking about all around not just because of you....what you should say is...nah it doesnt even come to top 10 top 3 or 5 because these games beat it for this reason...

I think MGS is the best series, but it's not my favorite. FF is my favorite series and FFX is my favorite game, but as a complete package I think MGS4 is the best game of all time and as a whole experience, nothing even compares to the MGS series. The story arc is HUGE and it's such a good story (although it can get ridiculously confusing at times too).

I was wondering the same thing, but figured everyone would get defensive.

Nah, it's alright but I prefer other series over MGS like PoP or Half Life for example.

The games and stories are all right. MGS3 is an amazing game by my terms. But MGS as a whole feels hollow aside from the twists and betrayals. I don't nearly have as much "fun" playing MGS as I do other series like, Disgaea, Jak, Uncharted, Dark Cloud, Valkyria Chronicles, FF, Kingdom Hearts, Shadow of the Colossus, Rock Band, etc. the MGS series is still great it just doesn't cater to my taste in videogames (except MGS3).

Only ever played MGS4. I think GTA is the best series.

A metal gear game seems almost possible????? Um Raven, Psycho Mantis, and so on. Parts of the Nuclear story yes but the game overall is way over the top. MGS was my favirote in the series, great story for a video game but would translate horribly to the big screen. [QUOTE="jmsbond35"]

What I meant by that was that it is an exaggerated version of what COULD happen in real life, such as the threat of nuclear disaster, Patriots, and the way war is in the futureand such. Sorry, I said it wrong; the whole crazy bosses and Metal Gear are, in my mind, there for the fun and intrigue for the gamer, a weird add on to make it appeal to action gamers alone. I really meant the wholething about Big Boss' outlook on the world, the way the characters interact and the extremely in-depth explanations of everything as to not leave the gamer wondering.

Of coarse, one of the best franchises of all time.

Though with all I've seen with Metal Gear. It's basically stuff that "can" realistically exist in the future. Most of the stuff used in Metal Gear are either in testing, or prototype stages in the real world. I honestly don't feel anything used in Metal Gear is "far fetched". The only things I find that are unrealistic in Metal Gear are the ability to carry 50 weapons and make them spawn magically out of your hand. Or anything a character gets doesn't make them heavier and magically puts it in their ass. Also, people get shot and walk around like nothing happened. Like they were shot with an airsoft gun. Like that whole cutscene with Meryl and Akiba. In reality, they would've been dead or not able to move. But they're rolling around with their "love scene" while shooting people. But single bullets kill Haven troopers LOL

Can't blame it on SOP either because SOP was off during that time.

MGS3 & MGS4 and the 1st MGS all my favorites...dont really like MGS2 that much >_>

Since there are so many metal gear solid fans in here, I'll thread jack and ask you guys a question. So I am interested in playing through the entire series 1-4, and am not sure which versions are the best to get? I know the substance and sustinence versions of 2 and 3 are better than the originals, and that the essentials box has that. but what about the first metal gear solid? and compare that to the "remake" of twin snakes. which is a better game to get and play through? or should I download it from the PSN?

Not a fan of the MGS series, but I respect the impact it has made on the gaming community. Perhaps one day I'll give the series another try. Never could get into the series, or the 3rd person steal action gameplay.

My favorite gaming series happens to be Shin Megami Tensei. Some awesome games with dark stories.
