ive never played a mgs game but i want to get into it being that the release of mgs4 is only a few months away. my question is that if i pick up the essential collection when it comes out on the 18th and beat all 3 games before mgs4 comes out will i understand the series? or is there more to it? thanks

well, yeah you'd basically get it.

Besides i think that the MGS3 disc that will come with it will have the original Metal Gear game as well as metal gear 2 (at least subsistance had them) so you practically get every MGS game. (except for the hand held games)

No, you will get the story. btw even if you dont get essentials, they said that they will put flashbacks and stuff so you understand it.

Yea it should be fine. Plan on about a week of good hard gaming to beat each game.

also, if you preorder MGS4 you get a bonus DVD in april that will have like a summary of the whole MGS Saga. as well as a key so you could participate in the online beta.

You'll definitely get a better understanding. Though the storyline itself is a bit confusing and complicated the first time through, but it is a pretty good stroyline altogether. As for the gameplay, you should get some practice on the MGS games out now, so you kick @$$ on MetalGearOnline. I'm replaying MGS2 & 3 for that purpose alone;).

stories often get very confusing.

when i want to pick up a franchise with no previous experience I go to Wikipedia.

Wikipedia is pretty great for getting the gist of a game
