from what I hear its a good story on its own but you will be missing major events that have significant meaning to them not to mention all the times you'll be going "lol wut?"

You could just read up the stories on Wikipedia. Thats what I did and I feel like I know what I'm talking about.

Just get the MGS Esstential Collection for 25 bucks. It has MGS, MGS 2, and MGS 3. Thats a good deal if you want to understand the story and build up a collection.

That's not really a good idea... MGS games are best played in sequence, since all the stories connect to each other.

I recommend you get the MGS Essential Collection and play that before you play MGS4. Gametrailers.com has a retrospective for MGS explaining the story (although very briefly). I felt that they left quite a bit out, if I were you, I'd check out wikipedia.org to get more of the story.

Get the essentials collection (it's only $30) and play through the series.

there will be a thing in MGS4 that describes past events during cutscenes, and you could read the storyline by reading the "story" section of a walkthrough for MGS1,2,3

If you have a lot of time on your hands and have an attention span , watch the entire playthroughs on youtube (gameplay , codec , cutscenes) and you will be all set for MGS4.

From the screenshots, it looks like there are quite alot of flashback that should fill in new players quite nicely. One even looked playable though it could have been a cinema with the way they use in game engine.

When you pre-order MGS4, you get a DVD that narrates the whole storyline, pretty much. That should help. But imo, I would rather you play the entire series. At least MGS2 and MGS3. I dont know if you can stand looking at all the jaggies in MGS1. The screen is shaking so bad because of all the jaggies, lol.

that DVD is so god-damned worthless, it never explaines the small stuff like how liquid controls ocelot.

My comment didn't show up! No.

Okay, I said there is a theory as to why Liquid controls Ocelot. It is made known in MGS3-or you can put the pieces together-after making a few codec calls (I'll help. During the battle with Ocelot). I like that theory but Kojima may Kojima may have something else in mind for this...so...yeah

I've never played a Metal Gear Solid game (I did have Metal Gear for the NES when I was a kid though). But here's what I'm going to do. I plan on playing MGS4 and if I like it, I'll go back and play the other ones. Then play MGS4 again.

Well if you have a good memory, you could always play them backwards. But yeah, I would reccomend you play them all to understand it better.

If I were you I'd backtrack and get the ESSENTIAL COLLECTION that's out right now. Either that or get a primer on the history of Metal Gear either here or at Wikipedia.com
