Looking for a trap that's it since the gun was positioned in a alley and just there on the ground.

It's to check for land mines. See, people used to boobytrap weapons with land mines. Pick it up, BOOM.

To make sure there is not a bomb with a weight trigger hidden beneath it. Smart move, Snake. In the middle east that's one of their favorite military tactics. Seriously. A friend of mine In Iraq said some guys in his squad drug a dead cow off the road so their convoy could pass.... BOOM! Luckily it was weak and most of the blast was smothered by the cow. All they got was rotten cow chunks in their mouths and some singed eye-brows.

the real question should be: why don't he bother checking any of the other weapons he finds later on in the game, if he is so cautious about the 1st? ;)

still the best all time game ever tho!

Because he knows they're safe. He just watched them fall from the hands of the guy with the bullet in his head. :D
