Much to my surprise I got MGS4 from my lady for Xmas...

I haven't played and MGS games since the PS2 days, so I am just wondering if there is any back story I need to know before I get into it; I mean, I know this is the culmination of the previous games and that there are some dramatic cut scenes etc; and I want to get the full experience that I hear so much about from those of you who think it is the best game ever made, so fill me in if there is anything I need to know...and please dont spoil the story for me; I can't wait to get started and wanna get the experience that I read about so much here.

Thanks heaps...merry Xmas to all.

but there's another way... sad part is it's the boring way... reading... lots and lots of reading...

but i really suggest to get MGS 1, MGS2: Sons of Liberty, MGS: Snake Eater.

I played like half of MGS2 and the first one fully, but apparently there is an add on in psn store with back story etc, just hope it is in the Aussie psn... hahah I like the desperation in your post though, but I gave my old PS2 to a kid that really needed it !!!!

You can still play MGS1, 2 and 3 on the PS3. What I did was, before I bought MGS4 was buy the collectors edition which had all 3, and replayed them all. It was fun, plus a good jolt to the memory. It is ESSENTIAL you play the previos ones so you get the full awesome experience of the 4th installment. There are going to be a bunch of times in MGS4 where you go, "Oh so that's who he/she really was?" or "Holy **** this makes so much sense now!". It's fun. Plus it's just awesome to see how the combat has progressed over the 4 games, because combat doesn't stay the same like in most sequels to other games.

Well, you seem to be big on story, which is good.

If you have a backwards compatible PS3, then buy 2 and 3 and complete them.

If you play it in this state, the game will just be "Ohhhhhh.." instead of the "OHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! WHOAAAAAAAAA, NO WAY!!!!!!" that it could've been had you played 2 and 3.

The MGS4 Database from the store is nice, but is really only meant to answer questions asked by people who have played the whole series. It isn't meant for filling you in on the story, and it's also a ridiculously long read. It's basically an electronic encyclopedia.

Just do yourself a favor and play them all.

You won't regret it, I promise.

DO IT OR I'LL NEVER FORGIVE YOU.

You don't have to play them all man, you just have to take some time to get acquianted with the story.

I figure this will help you understand everything you need to know.

You would think we would be past all the MGS4 haters by now. People have their own oppinion. Fans of the series know that they have cut scences and thick story going into the game. Go back and read the Gamespot reviews for the first 3 MG's. They all say the same thing. "Long cut scenes, 1/2 the time watching movies, but the game is phenominal."

What you need to know is that the game is worth playing. Period.

OK. You have two choices here. If your PS3 is backward compatible, you can buy "Metal Gear Solid: The Essentials" for $30, and that will have all of the Metal Gear Games (even back to NEW days) or you can use Wikipedia. You really should play through them all. It's an INCREDIBLE experience. But, what ever you do, don't mess it up fo yourself and move straight to MGS4.

As everyone else has already stated, playing the previous three would probably be best. The Metal Gear Essentials Collection is less than $30 on Amazon. Alternatively, you can just do some research (wiki) and read all the backstory (thats what I did). If you decide to just read to catch up on what you've missed, you can d/l the Metal Gear Database off of PSN (its free), its like a giant MG encylopedia and will supplement anything you read about online. That's what I did and it made the story a million times better!

Actually, I felt that MGS3 helped to understand Big Mama, Revolver Ocelot, and the ending much better. Even Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (8-bit) ties into Raiden's portion of the story. The point is, though you can play MGS4 through and still consider it a good game when you're done, playing through ALL of the previous games will not just be fun and captivating throughout, but will also turn MGS4 into the most epic experience in your gaming collection. With that said, I highly doubt anyone in this thread can disagree with that statement.

Just finished watching the vids. DON'T WATCH THEM if you haven't played the games yet. The videos exclude many key moments in the storyline. Naturally, they are also major spoilers. Just play the games. There's no way around the fact that it will not only be the est way to get the most out of MGS4, but it will also reward you with some of the most fun you've had playing video games. You can get the Metal Gear Essentials collection (which includes all of the franchises history) for only $30. Do it!! I promise you won't regret it.

I also highly doubt anyone can disagree with that. MGS4 is a very amazing game, but playing at least the previous 3 can make MGS4 all that much more amazing. 4 games that overshadow my entire gaming history.

MGS's story arc is so mind-boggling that if you don't remember them well, then yea...play through the games or read the summaries on Wikipedia. I promise you that you won't be sorry, especially since MGS3 is the best one.
