For ad-hoc you'd need to be in pretty close proximity with the other players so you'd need to find players around your area of Australia.

Yup, the online gathering hall is basically ad-hoc game play where you need to be close to the other players. There are two real online platforms that are supported by MHFU though, one is through the PS3 network and the other is Xlink Kai. If you don't have a PS3 or don't use Xlink Kai then you can't really play with other players on the internet.

The software Xlink Kai is free, just google Xlink Kai and you'll find a bunch of links. There is an expense though, for you to be able to play using Xlink kai, you need to first buy a USB Adapter. There aren't really any USB adapter sellers in Australia that I know of, the Au people who play on Xlink that I know bought their USB adapter over the internet and just had it shipped to Australia. (I had mine shipped from America) If you google Xlink Kai and find out how to set it up, you'll also find advise on which USB adapter to get. Xlink Kai supports both PC and Macintosh platforms. On a final note, multiplayer gameplay really enhances Monster Hunter gameplay as the game is designed for multiplay, so the expense of getting a USB adapter is a small price to pay to really enjoy Monster Hunter. That's my opinion at least. (I soloed MHF2 for a long time before I decided to get a USB Adapter, and I kinda wished I got one sooner, LoL)

Yes it is. It is the only reason I will not buy this game. I do not know anybody with a PSP.

When people say you have to by close to the other people to play using Ad Hoc, how close are we talking? Like same city, same state, same country, what? And what is ad hoc anyways? I don't have a PSP yet, so I have never heard of ad hoc.

Ad-hoc is the wireless function built in on PSPs which let PSPs connect with each other. The range is actually a few meters (probably similar to the range needed to connect using blue tooth)

And as mentioned above, there are methods to connect your PSP over the internet, it just takes some extra effort on the PSP users side because the internet systems aren't "plug and play".

Xlink Kai works great. Aside from connecting your PSP to the net, it also works for connecting your Xbox/Wii and other consoles over the net.

If you also own a ps3 there is a program on the japanese psn called adhoc party which lets you play adhoc 'online'using a wired ps3, all you would have to do is make a japanese account, dl adhoc party and away you go, best thing to do would be to go to youtube and search for adhoc party guides and how to make a japanese account.
