Well, I have played neither, but they both have demos on PSN that you can check out, and you can also read reviews on this website to help you make your decision.

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is not quick to pick up. But it's a good game.

I have no idea whether Phantasy Star is quick to pick up (I only played the demo), but I can assure you that it is a crappy game. The ally AI is the most pathetic I have ever seen. The "town" interface is horrible. The voice acting is awful. The character portraits are cut-outs of the in-game characters (so pathetic; I have never even seen done this in another game).

Just going by average reveiws scores, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite is two grades higher. Consider that Unite is essentially an update of a game that came out 2 years ago.

MHFU is a bit of a slow game but is incredibly fun once you go up in the hunter ranks and play with friends. PsP is a bit repetitive and has a terrible story. The multiplayer also seemed a bit laggy.

MHF is not like a regular RPG game for the fact that you need to train yourself not the character.... You are training yourself how to beat a Boss monster with your current weapon and so on. There is no leveling in the game. You are only tougher because of special potions and more powerful armors (which in most cases, you make them from Raw material you gather) Furthermore, there is no Story mode, I think.... You basically pick quests after quests after quests beating up more powerful Bosses in the game.... At some point, you probably want to hook up with your friends to beat some monsters.... The learning and the joy of beating monsters with your friends is probably the strongest point in the game.

Therefore, I would say it is NOT easy to pick up at all... You will be looking to spend about 100+ hours into the game.

On the other hand, Phantasy Star is more towards traditional RPG, there is Leveling and there is Story Mode for you to play. (complete with 3 different endings depending on your dialoge). Well, again, you will be picking up Side-missions and do some "Space" crawling on different planets.... You get tons of weapons from Rare drops.... You might enjoy Multiplayer mission, though.... It's pretty cool

Repetitive or not?... I would say both are quite repetitive. =P But MHF really is a very goal-oriented... You kidda have to set goals with things like Armor I wanna, Monsters I wanna beat and such.... Therefore, it can be fun but it needs a lot of dedication on your part.. Phantasy Star, you just keep doing Space crawling.... It's a smooth ride... Too smooth I fell asleep with my PSP on.... Check out the reviews too... Users reviews in particular.

Monster Hunter Unite has a demo on the UK PSN and Phantasy Star has a demo on the US PSN. I enjoy both but I must admit if you pick up MH and you enjoy it prepared to put in a lot of hours it has a long learning curve also. Phantasy Star is a great RPG also, lots to do and find. There are both different style of games even though both being in the RPG genre.
