Johnny Cash lol, but no you don't choose the characters. Every chapter has got a different character and the first 1 is Johnny Cage.

First off - Whoah, you need to proof read your posts. :P

Second - The Story Mode in Mortal Kombat is done in chapters and in each chapter you assume the role of a different character, not just "Johnny Cash". You should get this game.

The story mode in this game is, thankfully, very unconventional for a fighter. Instead of having you clear Arcade mode using your selected fighter only to see a brief nonsensical cinematic at the end, it actually takes you through an epic by fusing together all character stories. This means that you'll play different characters as you progress further into the story. I'm about half way through, and I have been thoroughly enjoying it very much. Note that the traditional Mortal Kombat arcade ladder is also available. It's surprisingly a well done game, taking into regard what they did with the series after Mortal Kombat 3. Definitely give it a chance. P.S. I've read a couple of complaints about this so, if you do decide to get the game, get a new copy otherwise you won't have access to online play unless you fork over an extra couple of dollars.

to me the shining point to this game was the story mode. I was pretty hooked and it actually takes has a decent amount of length to it. unless you're playing nonstop, but even still you'll walk away in frustration by the cheapness of certain fights but you'll always come back for more.

I stopped at the end of the second tourney... on Beginner (since this is my first fighting game, this was my difficulty) this boss was so freaking cheap, never let you back up so you could use the "strategy" that you are supposed to for beating him. He would just shoulder charge, hammer spam, and then once you were in the corner you were done

Get the game, every penny you pay for it is worth it. At first I kinda regret buying it because I sucked at it, but yeah the game is worth it :)

it definitely is as an overall package, but a lot of the story mode fights are STUPIDLY cheap, so I tend to caution players away if they only want the game for the story mode... but seriously, who the hell would that even be?

I just find the nature of the 2v1 fights to be unfair. Especially Shang Tsung and Gorn Chi (I think those are the names... the old man who runs the first tourney and the shaman who likes like Kratos)... that one pissed me off.

when its 2v1, they usually drop the difficutly of each person, though. don't expect to win every fight the first try. just keep playing and get more experience and find out what works or doesnt work for you.

Ok I have been debating getting this all weekend and this week so far but I think I am finally sold. After work today I am going to purchase my first mortal combat since Sega genesis. How long would you say the story mode lasts? I realize it depends on difficulty/skill level but just a rough guesstimate. Also can you replay it later on if you want to on a different difficulty? Finally how exactly does the ladder mode work? Do you just keep going and going? Or is it like the 20 level fights of old? Thanks in advanceAdamRiggs4

This was also my first Mortal Kombat since Ps2.

The story mode is pretty entertatining, I'm still playing the Story Mode I got the game on launch day and still going on with me. I'm not exactly sue with the replay. And the ladder still works the same with Shao Kahn in as the last dude :)

the story mode i would say is about 5 to 7 hours i believe. and yes you can redo it on every difficulty, easy, begineer, medium, hard and expert. so that is lots of replay value.

the ladder is 10 match the last 3 ares mini bosses and boss.

you can also do tag ladder.

also the challenge tower has 300 missions. that is another 6/7 hours at least of play

also there is test your might. strike, luck...

and last the online feature of course

overall excellent game 9.5/10

Wait until you have to fight Kintaro and Goro in a tag. It sucks. I'm playing on medium (?. Not Expert or Hard, the one below that). The easiest way to beat Shao Kahn is to spam him with high and low fireballs. And ALWAYS jump over the spinning hammer he throws, and duck the spears. If you time it right, you can do a low fireball and automatically duck the spear.

Are people THAT scared of Kahn that they actually stay as far away as possible from him and spam? I think a much easier and safer strategy is to get behind him, do a combo (knocking him down), then quickly jump over him as he is getting up and repeat. That's what i do on normal and he never wins a round.

How does listing the order of fights spoil the game? It's a fighting game. It's not like I just told you the end of God Of War or Bioshock. Besides, the story mode is just one aspect of the game. There are many other things to explore in this game.

You are correct. Will do. However I didn't consider this a spoiler. Thought I was just answering the TC's question. My fault.
