I will be looking to purchase a Vita in the future and as a current owner of a PSP one of my most infuriating issues with the machine is its cumbersum video playback feature.

Not only must almost all video be tranfered into a PSPS format before it the machine will acknowledge its existance, the transfer process itself is a long and arduous ordeal and after its done there is no guarantee it will even work on the PSP.

This was annoying because it offered an avenue to catch up on my fave series, and animes on my daily communte, however if the Vita suffers the same idotic design I will be reconsidering my purchase.

The question is, is it easy and straightforward to get videos, music and the like to work without sweat, blood and what feels like a lifetime?

i honestly dont know, and if media is your primary concern like videos and music etc the price of the memory sticks will drive you nuts, sounds like you would enjoy a phone better lol like a galaxy s, with cheap 32 gig sticks and at least 8 gig inbuilt.

i dont know what the vita is like for media as i have my 16 gig stick filled with games only and it is too small, and all my media like videos (whole seasons of tv shows including anime etc) and music are on the 40 gig i have on my galaxy s phone.

im surprised you found the psp hard to convert videos for, did you try pspvideo9?

edit: i need to test this but i read that the vita might be more restrictive on what you can put over to it eg not full folder access like a psp.

Vita is a good multimedia device and there are many upgrades compared to PSP... the only problem is that the videos have to be in .MP4 format.
But man you can play HD videos and all the rest, browse the net, twitter, fb, skype, everything's in there!

I'm watching a lot of anime on my vita and other stuff.
Just to let you know I've bought mine day 1 and so far I'm pretty happy with it, never regreted it.

It's marginally better and easier than the PSP but still remarkably clunky compared to any current phone or mp3 player. Don't buy it with the intention of playing videos or music, it's more of a bullet point on the box than anything else.

Remarkably clunky? I found it to be quite functional, if light on features(compared to the PSP). But clunky? I didn't find that at all, unless you mean just the initial startup time.

It's my main MP3 player with Music Unlimited and I often download podcasts to it. Sometimes videos too, but I've only found MP4s and they worked fine

Thanks guys, I am looking forward to owning a vita for the games, but a functional and stress free video playback functionality would be greatly welcomed.

so an mp4 file will copy on straight onto the vita?

Yeah, it has a dedicated app for copying files; pics/vids/music e.t.c from your PC/PS3 to the Vita. It's pretty intuitive.

I have had my Vita for quite some time and have never even considered doing anything other than playing a game on it. My phone, tablet, and laptop are all much more capable media devices, and they all have way better battery life than my Vita.

I do because my phone has a smaller screen than my vita and tablets/laptops are bigger than I would want to lug around. I prefer pocketable devices.

I like what the Vita offers with multimedia but there's tons to improve.

The real problem I have with the Vita is that the volume is just so damn low compared to any other device say iphone or ipad.

the speakers are bad but worse are the headphones, even using good ones sounds awful.

A seven inch tablet isn't much bigger than a Vita, and the battery lasts about four times as long. If a Vita fits in your pocket then a Nexus 7, Kindle Fire HD, or Samsung Galaxy 7 inch shouldn't be much of a stretch.

Those are about 20% wider and longer, so they probably would feel bulky if I could. Vita is the limit on size I can put in my pocket comfortably.

I find the sound more than loud enough with games and music through speakers or my v-moda bass freq. earbuds(which sound great on vita) Though I do make my videos louder during conversion to match the other types of media.

I use this ones: http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B000ULAP4U

and the quality is much clear and loud with an iphone 5. I should try them on another Vita, maybe there's something wrong with mine.

Could be the headphones too. My cousin has a $100 big set like yours and they're not as loud as my $40 earbuds, after comparing them on vita.
