My situation =

My 80GB B/C PS3 YLOD'ed this morning.

FIFA 2011 is stuck in the disk drive.

I have a 500GB hard drive in the PS3.

Solutions??? =

* Should I send it in to Sony ?? Will Sony give me back my FIFA 2011 and 500GB Hard Drive ??

* Should I open the PS3 up and take out the HDD and FIFA 2011, then buy a PS3 Slim ??

What would you do ?

Contact them first, explain the situation.

I'm guessing you're out of warranty, it will cost around 170$. As far from my experience here in Canada, shipping and handling is taken care of by Sony.

My old 60GB had Uncharted stuck in it and 320 GB HDD. All returned upon console fix.

I don't see a reason to buy new console but it's ultimately up to you.

They will send the disc back and advise you to take the HDD out before sending it. If you didn't back up your saves find a way to revive the PS3 temporarily (ie, the hairdryer trick, I can go into more detail). That's if you do choose to send it, I would personally buy a slim in this situation. In fact that's exactly what I did.

There is a way to get your disc out. Search on google i forget how you do it but its easy. Also fixing ps3 is easy if your smart enough to follow the guides on youtube and not mess it up.

I'll assume that you're no longer under warranty. If that is the case, I would recommend a self repair based on my own experience with the YLOD. Currently sits at 4 months since repair without a hitch. Here is the link provided to the YLOD repair tutorial. LINK

150 to have a refurb mailed to you, 120 to exchange it for a slim. They mail your disc back to you, the service is quick, but far from painless as you will lose all your save game files that you dont have backed up. Taking your hard drive out will be of no use to you since the ps3 REQUIRES a format of any HDD installed into it...even one used with another PS3. Ive done this before as you can tell. Much more painless to do a self fix...or take it to a fix it place. Normally YLOD is like a 75 dollar fix.

I just bought a new PS3, fixed my YLOD'd PS3, did a full data transfer to the new one, and put the old one in my basement.

I am faced with this situation, too. How many Gb did you have to transfer and how long did it take? Going from fat 60Gb to new slim 160Gb. Do I have to install all of the relevant games first??? Thx

I've been in a similar situation (except i had a 250gb hdd). Heres what I did. I called sony, told'em my ps3 broke. I told them I'm going to send the unit without the hdd in it, and be sure to let them know that the game is stuck inside. when you get the box, there will be a peice of paper inside, where you can write what you are sending/not sending with the ps3. Here you can note that you aren't sending it with the hdd, there is a game stuck inside, etc. etc.

I been there... My old 60 GB PS3 gave up a couple of months back with BF BC2 in it.

But since I live in an area where sony's customer service is scarce, at best, I figured that I could try to fix the YLOD myself by following this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_Ic1_TY-GU

But, once I had split my PS3 into million pieces (and retrieved the disk within it) I sorta stopped caring... Turns out that ripping it apart is much easier than putting it back together.

It easy enough to open the PS3 and take the disk out yourself, if thats what you want, all you need is a reasonable set of screwdrivers.

You can't really trust Sony with fully fixing your console. My 80 gig BC PS3 died within 2 months of me getting it back from Sony.

What I suggest, and this is what I did, is to take out FIFA (easier said than done, but it's possible), take out the HDD, and buy a slim. You'll most likely save more money this way.
