My experience with Unreal Tournament 3

Ok, I know im gonna get flamed for this, but.....I am dissapointed with Unreal Tournament. I have never played Unreal Tourament games untill this one so I didn't know what to expect. I just heard that was was an incredibly fun, fast paced, intense game. If you don't like online games then you definitely shouldn't buy this one.

The Campaign, while has GREAT cut scenes, is pretty much the SAME as online, with bots. You don't go through levels, it's just a series of deathmatch games with bots. It's more like a tutorial to get you ready for the online play. The graphics are great, but not as good as I expected them to be. I have a 360 but I TOTALLY favor my PS3 over the 360. I don't think they're better than Gears Of War. You can tell they are they are from the same studio, but the graphics arent as SHARP and detailed as Gears. But that's just my opinion.

I just don't think this game warrants the $60 purchase for the simple fact that the Campaign is pretty much the same as the online mode. I love online multiplayer games, but after playing COD4 for the last month.....Unreal just doesnt do it for me. I'm gonna have to return this one.

Nobody complains about the single player in Warhawk because there is nothing, but when Epic tried to make something out of nothing, people seem to think there is a reason to knock the whole game for it...

In your opinion that is... how do you go about calling people Noobs simply because they don't like the genre? There are no facts in preference only preference. And let's get this strraight right now... you were also a noob at some stage. I personally disagree with the post as i thoroughly enjoy UT3 as i have enjoyed UT2004, however i can see how some people won't be blown away by it also. Maybe CD4 is more tohisliking because of the realism. Calling people noobs because they don't like a game is lame and goes against the core principles of gaming... having fun.

Mark Rein said himself said that UT3 on PS3 is better visually than GeOW on 360! The graphics are freakin' AWESOME best yet! What are you talking about?

As far as the campaign goes, Mr.Rein warned that the campaign will be like a tutorial to train people for the online and that UT3 won't be that FPS game that will have a Halo or HL story, he said that himself in an interview. People need to read more often. Anyway, UT games always been about MP and I think you should be grateful that the team added a tutorial-like storyline unlike some other games. UT is known to be a MP game and that's a fact!

COD4's online is far better and more advanced in the way its architecture is set up. UT is one of the grandfather's of online gaming, but it hasn't evolved much over the years, when COD has.

Also, I agree with you on the graphics, TC. A pretty big letdown indeed.

He also mentioned many of things, then we found out later they were lies. Splitscreen, among other things. Rein opens his mouth too much.

I have to agree with the topic starter Unreal tournament 3 is a very poorly made game its all flash and effects and thats all. The single-player terrible and the online which is the main selling point is even worse.

Call of duty 4 destorys Unreal tournament 3 in every single-aspect beside maybe graphics and even then its close.

Lol is that even a reason? WHat do you think that the gameplay of Call of Duty magically changes when you hop online? UT never had SP and this one had itbut fans call it just an "add-on". If you bought it for single player then you should just do some research or rent games that you feel that aren't what "YOU are looking for".

And as far as Calling COD 4 better than UT 3, it just your opinion. In my opinion, it just completely destroys COD 4 in everything except for it exceptional but very short SP campaign..

Console people probably dont even know how far you can go with a mod, but you can change the whole genre of the game and make a completely new game, which in the end will never get boring.

For me COD4 is starting to get boring, yay im on prestige, but you just keep doing prestige over and over...

I'd like to see those mods, but sadly they have to be made on PC then put onto PS3. If you know anything about UT3 on PC, you'd know that the community is pretty much dead. It's very sad. I've been playing UT since UT2004 and I expected PC gamers to jump for joy with UT3, but that's not the case. Mods will be slim pickins'. It seems like people have moved onto CryEngine/CryEngine 2 and Source.

Well in some cases they are equal, take the water(sea and river) for instance and compare both, you'll notice a similarity. Again, UT games are based on fiction life whereas Uncharted leans more towards realism. As far as textures goes, Uncharted beats all games including Crysis. Textures in Uncharted are freakin' unbelievable. Textures in UT3 are AMAZING too but not as real life as Uncharted because again UT is based on fiction looking life.

In "realistic" I meant visually and not the overpowered Drake. UT3 water is awesome man come on! Plus, have a close look at UT3 weapons and compare them to UT 2k4 and plz tell me what you think. Whoever said UT3 wasn't improved compared to its predecessor then he is a fanboy or just a UT hater!

I find it kind of funny you bring up counter strike and red orchestra; mainly since both originated as full conversion mods. CS being a mod for Half Life and Red Orchestra being a mod for UT2003/2004. Sorry, I'll stop rambling off topic now...

I think UT3's too much eye candy and lacking in game play even comparing with UT2k3. Granted there isn't too much activity on PC front right now but it also took a while for people to switch from CS1.6 to CS:S.

Comparing UT3 and CoD4 is just stupid... UT series is known for run'n'gun while CoD4 is much slower paced and more for casual and slow game play. It's not bad mouthing CoD4, just that CoD4 doesn't require the lightening fast response and aiming as much as UT series are known for and should be much easier to pick up (esp since UT3 allows kb/m, won't be long before those guys start calling every controller player 'noobs') :D.

Beside, UT isn't the king... Even right now there are 60k player playing counter strike, and between different version it sums up to more then 100k on gamespy, and more then 130k on steam.. I donno about you, but CoD4 can't even hold socks for Half Life. Hell, the guy with the frog armor can't even pick Gorden Freeman's tooth. Too bad though as Gabe Newell said he hate PS3, the reason why PS3 version of Orange Box is outsourced to EA instead of from th venerated Valve team... :(

cod4 is the most unbalanced multiplayer game...ever...ut is a fun jump in and play shooter...i dont need to waste time leveling up like an rpg just to be on the same playing field...thers no cheap airstrikes or stuff like that...ut is purely based upon skill...cod4 isnt a tactical shooter...u cant even blind fire in that game...in ut the best players finish at the top of the list...its purely skillleon106

Another reason why I did not like tactical shooter as much. It's almost impossible to be a camper in games like UT and Quake. Don't want campers? go with UT3. It's hard to be good in tactical shooter then excel in fast pace games like UT. But not as much the other way around.

First of all, why were people trying to compare COD4 to UT3........does that make sense to anybody?...'uhh i have a gun and projectiles come out of it when i hit the button so they're the same thing, right?' ....no, completely different styles so stop tryin

the graphics on ut3 are amazing.....yes they look like gears, but yes amazing....and yeah i don't think the textures are quite as sharp for ut3 as they are on gears (maybe i'm wrong) but i'm pretty sure that's cause ut3 plays a LOT faster, and more people/bots can be spawned at once. the 360's ram had to be tuned almost completely to visual (as opposed to system) to get those textures...(sadly since the ps3 can't exchange theirs, i'm afraid we won't get those good looking textures) ...but yeah it worked for gears because the game moves at arelatively slow pace....yes i know, action packed, but yes...relatively slow....and i haven't played gears in a while so maybe there isn't as much of a difference as i'm remembering there is...funny how things in your mind change after a year, ehh?

oh...i was reading on epic's forum that had like a bizzilion post being angry with no splitscreen, that the topic got locked with the last post being someone from epic saying they understand their complaints and will see if there's a possibility they can add it in with an update..... I wouldn't get your hopes up with that one though, a patch like that is unheard of....but man would that make me happy...maybe my fiance would stop yelling at me for playing so much if she could play with me....hehehe.

and i'm not gonna lie, playing through the campaign isn't exactly boring...(maybe for those of you playing on easy?) but i play on campaign and open it up online for people to come it and play with me which is pretty cool....but theres sooo many maps in this game and they are ALL very good....i'm getting ready to start a new campaign and beat it again before i start getting serious about playing online.....

but this game is worth the money, it really is. as if we had many other choices on the ps3 right? it does suck that we didnt get splitscreen but here's hoping we might?!?!?!

In the beginning was Unreal and that's if you wanted a story mode, but then came Unreal Tournament and the gods were pleased. If you're new to it don't expect a 'real' single story campaign mode. The campaign mode is just a series of death matches but that's what I personally wanted because uhh it's Unreal Tournament!! If they make some kind of campaign mode minus deathmatches than they should just make another 'Unreal' game. Start thinking of video games like movies or books. Do your research before delvingin - of course you were upset about the deathmatches via campaign mode because you lacked the knowledge of Unreal TOURNAMENT. For the sake of my sanity i am going to state my opinion on people constantly, everywhere i read, making these retarded topics with the exact same annoying and downright pointless whining about ut3.

1. UT3's lackluster gampaign.
Its a multiplayer game. Think about that for a while.
Dont expect a single player mode that is anything more than a generic semi plotless story with two-dimentional characters. Just dont, save you time and effort and as a general common expectancy just dont expect a multi player game thats VERY CORE gameplay REVOLVES around multiplayer to have a single player worth remembering. I never have and never will.

The single player maps the same as the multiplayer? Its called cost cutting. If you were a game dev you'de do the same. Epic know that most people at the end of the day are going to play the multiplayer part of the game, whether thats against people or bots is irrelevent, the point still stands that MOST people are going to play that aspect of the game much more than any 'official' single player mode they could have come up with.

2. UT3's graphics.
When a game company makes a game they have to take into acount alot of things. In this case since its a multiplayer game epic like everyone else have to realise that their game maps need to be large, people like space in multiplayer, so the more the better. People also like playing against/with as many other people as possible at any given time in a multiplayer game.

So no. 1: size, no. 2: lots of people

Also take into acount that MOST people DONT have super fast omfgbbq internet speeds.

When you make a multiplayer game that has HUGE maps and LOTS of people playing on said maps at the same time for the sake of having your game playable by most of the demographic your aiming for you need to have limitations in how you go about doing things. This is CRUCIAL in order for the game to perform well and be playable ok?
This is the exact same reason mmos have engines which are designed for scale and population over shinyness.

Personally i am AMAZED at what ut3 has managed to pull off. I crank the game up to max, fight in warfare maps with up to 30 people and my fps and ping are downright brilliant. Could I achieve this if epic had pushed they're unreal engine 3 to max on ut3? hell no.

3. Comparing UT3 to Gears of War

I would hope by the time people get this part of my rant i've made my points understandable but for those still questioning my logic i will continue.

Unreal Engine 3 is one of, if not THE most scalable, adapatable and ingeniously manufatcured engines in use by the industry at this point in time. Gears of War is a single player game with a multiplayer component whereas Unreal Tournament 3 is the complete oposite. To expect either to look the same as the other reguardless of the fact they run off the same engine is down right madness. Play Gears on single player and yes you'll see its easily got more detail in its enviroments, more objects on screen and generally speaking seems much more refined that ut3. This is perfectly normal and as a gamer I expected no less.

Now play Gears on multiplayer, yes its prettier, but how large are the maps? how many people can play in a single game at the same time? Think about it. Now think about ut3.

I hope i've instilled some kind of intelligence in the minds of the idiots who insist on b***ing about these subjects on every game website with a ut3 section i go to.

Ok, I know im gonna get flamed for this, but.....I am dissapointed with Unreal Tournament. I have never played Unreal Tourament games untill this one so I didn't know what to expect. I just heard that was was an incredibly fun, fast paced, intense game. If you don't like online games then you definitely shouldn't buy this one.

The Campaign, while has GREAT cut scenes, is pretty much the SAME as online, with bots. You don't go through levels, it's just a series of deathmatch games with bots. It's more like a tutorial to get you ready for the online play. The graphics are great, but not as good as I expected them to be. I have a 360 but I TOTALLY favor my PS3 over the 360. I don't think they're better than Gears Of War. You can tell they are they are from the same studio, but the graphics arent as SHARP and detailed as Gears. But that's just my opinion.

I just don't think this game warrants the $60 purchase for the simple fact that the Campaign is pretty much the same as the online mode. I love online multiplayer games, but after playing COD4 for the last month.....Unreal just doesnt do it for me. I'm gonna have to return this one.

I just dont get how come you people visit video games web sites and then go buy games withouth reading about them first...makes no sense to me
