I don't know what to do anymore. PS3 is supposed to have a low failure rate and all, but all i've ever experienced is failure. I fail to understand when others say "low failure rate". I orginally bought a launch ps3, and about 2 or 3 months after the warranty was up it froze mid-game and stopped reading blu-ray discs all together. Sent it in to sony, paid $150, and they replaced the blu ray drive and sent it back with a 3 month warranty.

About 3 and a half months later, my ps3 turns off in the middle of a game, flashes like blue yellow and blinks red and beeps like 3 times. it never turned on again. I was pretty frustrated since i already spent the money to get it fixed, now i would have to pay another $150. I might as well have bought a new non launch ps3 or even an xbox 360. After calling sony and explaining my situtation, to my luck, the guy said since it was only a couple weeks past the warranty, they will let me send in my ps3 for free as "courtesy". I ended up getting back a refurb ps3.

So now about 4 months have passed, and my ps3 did it again! It turned off mid game, and just beeps 3 times and blinks red. I called sony and they said the system i got back has no warranty since it was sent for free last time. So basically i'm gonna have to spend another $150 to get it fixed.

And its the worst possible time also, because i got 1 final week of exams and i wanted to replay mgs4 the month i have off before i start to work. 3 times my ps3 broke, so i'm thinking maybe i'm just doing something wrong? The 3rd ps3, i wanted to avoid any problems, so i would vaccuum the vents once a week, and wipe the cover with a swiffer cloth. I put the first 2 ps3s sideways, so i put the 3rd one horizontally. I also figured, maybe the first two were overheating, so i moved the 3rd ps3 far away from my tv and anything else that has heat, and placed it on a seperate table in the middle of the room. It looked wierd with a long cords going to the middle of the room but i figure it would be worth it to keep my ps3 safe. Other people told me, i probably wasn't keeping it clean enough, but this time around i really did, i cleaned it once a week. I don't do anything else with it, i don't move it around, i don't shake it, i don't do anything. And its in the coolest part of my house, my basement. So what the heck am I doing wrong that this keeps happening to me?

At this point i don't know what to do. Should i pay another $150 to get it fixed? I will get another launch ps3 back and it might break a 4th time. Maybe i should just buy an xbox 360 - i might've sooner, but i hate all its exclusive titles compared to ps3 like mgs4 and ps3s future games like GOWIII. i've already paid money for ps3 accessories and games and blu rays... so it probably wouldnt be worth it to switch to 360 now. another option is to buy a new ps3, maybe the new ps3s a built better? but i would probably have to wait a year or two before i spent that much money at once. i feel like sony ripped me off. any advice?

I've had two PS3's break to no fault of my own. I use a surge protector and I dust every day and I don't smoke. I sold mine on craigslist before they broke they kept freezing and not reading disks. I say pay the $150 to get it fixed and sell the one they send you back for $300 on craigslist and put the money twards a new one. I'm on my 3rd but it's not a referb and I've had it for 6 months with no problems. I'm no kid either I take care of my equipment. The next PS3 you get try not to play it for very long periods give it a rest every couple of hours.

Couldn't bother to read your wall of text, but it seems to me that perhaps you have bad 'karma'. Perhaps you should begin to re-examine some of your life decisions b/c you seem extremely unlucky. Most people never experience even one failed PS3... and you've had 3?! Seems extremely unfortunate...

Karma has nothing to do with it sony does make garbage hardware I've been buying sony products since 1993. I've had sonytvs dvd players stereos and cameras that have all broke. Meanwhile I have other equipment by other manufactures that lasted years beyonds sonys.

I feel sorry for you !! when my ps3 died it was so bad. I called sony they wanted to charge me $315 Aus dollars to repair. I ended up getting another PS3 which was $669 Aus with Killzone 2.

Ended up doing a reflow of the old PS3 mainboard its still working so i have 2 copies of killzone 2 and my mate plays on the other one when he drops in so it worked out ok!

I'm sorry to hear that. I read most of it.

I honestly don't know what to tell you. But the failure rate is as a whole and I honestly think it needs to be updated so Sony could have better warrenties. Mine got that "Yellow Light Of Death" last year and I've never had a system have a total failure ever in my life. When I went searching for info about it, I came across a lot and it was always the 60gig models. Mine was a launch 60gig PS3 bought Feb '07 and I was stuck with a $190 price tag here in Canada. I aswell, always took care of my PS3 (as well as others who have had this problem). The receipt says it was a power failure.

You would have to ignore the idiot responses from people who don't know their elbow from their arse, with their generic one dimensional way of thinking. They think it's just black & white and you had to have tampered with it in order for it to fail.

But generally, the 360 has a higher failure rate than the PS3. But if you feel it'll do you better, then go with that. Maybe you might get a 360 that won't fail on you..?

Best of luck to ya

Im on my 2nd and ive only had a ps3 for a few weeks. Someone need to do some investigative reporting on Sony and their failure rates. They should just bite the bullet like Microsoft and admit that their consoles (not all) have some issues. It seems, as was the problem with mine and judging by a simple google search, that the problem is with their bluray drives. If there's one thing , i cant complain about the customer service I got from Microsoft when my xbox broke. They sent me a new one , no questions asked, for free.

I actually read your wall of text. and I have this to say. STOP SWIFFERING YOUR PS3..... how do swiffer sheets get the dust to static cling to the sheet... oh yea.. static! and is any kind of static electricity good for electronics? answer: NO

Might as well run your PS3 under the water from the sink to get it clean if your going to swiffer it, IMHO.

P.S sux @ ur broken ps3 but think about it this way, if youve gone through 3 PS3's, then you woulda gone through roughly 9~12 XBOX 360's

I think you should upgrade to the current model of PS3, the older ones can break down on you.

That's tough to hear. Hopefully you'll get things sorted out and in my opinion, just buy a new one. It'll (from the looks of it) be worth it in the long run.

seems to me like your problem is terrible luck. That being said if you buy an xbox you will go through 9 in the time you went through 3 playstations...however Xbox has a longer warranty so that might be just what you need.

Your time frames are poor because that does not even add up to 2 years and the PS3 has been out for around 2.5 years. But I agree it sucks because I had 4 360's break in less than 2 years and my launch 60 gig is still running strong.

It is possible that there is some outside static charge damaging it. I would think it would be more likely to damage different electronics than just your ps3, but it's not impossible. Like has been said, don't create static charge by using those swiffer sheets. There's no way that I'd pay almost half the price just to get it repaired though. I'd get a new one if I were you.

I too am on my 2nd PS3, 1st died mid gta4 6 months new, i was very lucky and got the shop i bought it at to replace it with a brand new system, sofar this sys has been fine but i DO take these precaustions.

NEVER turn ps3 on/off by the power switch

use the PS button to quit out of a game before turning off the sys

kept sideawys up with plenty of space for airflow (as sony told me it was designed to stand this way-as well as flat)

use the ps button to turn on/off the sys

kept on standby, not constanstly power switched.

These are just the precautions i personaly now take and almost a yr on its all been good so far. ofc all units will have a % of failure, just you happen to be very unlucky imo

Put it this way- the chances of 3 ps3's dieing are slim, if u get a 4th, the chances that 1 will die too if you look after it are very very slim indeed :)

Agreed. Obviously this poor fella is getting some bum PS3s. Doesn't mean Sony purposely sold him garbage. Sony has a LOW failure rate, but some systems have to fail for them to have a failure rate at all, and seems this guy is getting them all! Honestly, I'd do as one person suggested and get it fixed one more time then turn around and sell it for 300 dollars. Throw an extra hundred bucks with that and you can go on Amazon.com and get one of those nice 80 gigs with backwards compatability! That's what I got, and no fails here. Good luck, man.

Ya know, its ironic how people who take care of there consoles end up with the problems. Well If you are considering another PS3 I would try a brand new one, don't trust the crappy refurbs sony sends you.

Man that sucks. Mine also died three months ago in a similar way. I was playing HL2 and it started freezing up, then bam it just shut down. Turn it on, no video or audio, but the blue light stayed on. The controler had no connection and just flashed red lights when I pushed the PS button. Trying to do a manual restart only made it beep three times and shut down. I think the CPU over heated and separated some of the connections even though I had it well ventalated. It was one month past warranty too :(

I would advise staying with Sony. If you like what they have, and are looking to some future games its worth it. If you are willing to go out and buy a 360, why not spend a little extra and just pick up a new PS3 with a bestbuy warranty. At least if it breaks again you can take it back to the store for a new one.

It might be that you just ran into the luck of buying one that is prone to brakedowns. If I was you, I would just go to Best Buy and change it for another one. The only problem is that you will have to remove the hard drive and than place it in the new PS3. Other than that, I dont know what to say but the fact that I feel for you. I had my xbox 360 brake down on me about 4 times in less than 7 months. I one day got it back from Microsoft and just traded it in at the nearest GameStop store. Yeah, I lost some money, but I didnt lose any more of my time and patients.

Yea i remember the 1st batches of PS3's that had 1st came out having problems but that usually happens with the 1st batch of anything the new ones should be fine now which is why Sony fixed the issues they were having with the 1st batches. Sorry to hear that hope all is well now!

You must be having bad luck with yours... Cause it seems the PS3's have a very low failure rate from most credible studies. I have had the same luck with my 360 (of course the 360's Failure Rate did not help) In my 3 years with my 360 I got: RROD - Twice Came back 1st Time and Now some games just will not play without freezing... E71 & E79 errors now... On the Upside my 360 has never scratched any of my discs like I've heard they can do. My PS3 has been awesome so far.

I believe the YLOD is a result of the ps3 overheating. Is your ps3 in a well-ventilated area?

Why don't you just buy a brand new ps3, maybe the 160GB or 80GB. I haven't seen any hardware failures with those. I know how you feel, my PS3 got the YLoD and i had to fork over $190 CDN. So far its running fine, my 3 month warrenty is up so i'm hoping nothing happens to it again, btw i have the 60GB

Maybe i should just buy an xbox 360 - i might've sooner, but i hate all its exclusive titles compared to ps3 like mgs4 and ps3s future games like GOWIII. i've already paid money for ps3 accessories and games and blu rays... so it probably wouldnt be worth it to switch to 360 now. another option is to buy a new ps3, maybe the new ps3s a built better? but i would probably have to wait a year or two before i spent that much money at once. i feel like sony ripped me off. any advice?

why the hell would you swiffer it and vaccum it?? Your just asking for something to destroy your PS3.

TC: sounds like your doing your part. Its VERY posable that the refurbs you have been getting are just poor quilty patch jobs. Something else to look at would be your power source. how many things do you have pluged into the breaker that your ps3 is on. some times when haveing to heavy a load on a breakerwill cause under voltage/amp's wich will cause a varity of issues. It will cause electronics to fail prematurly. Normaly all outlets in a room is run off of 1 breaker, some houses have multi breakers per room. try running a drop cord "a good heavy gauge 3 prong"from a def room to just you ps3. If you have a 360 or PC in the same room that has not had issues then this is prob not the problem. The more power a device use's the more likely it is to have issues IF its not getting good clean power.

Ifyou buy a new ps3 i would highly recommend getting a ext warrenty

I believe the YLOD is a result of the ps3 overheating. Is your ps3 in a well-ventilated area? Doolz2024
thats what i wanted to know as well. It sounds like its in a cabinet or something.

seems to me like your problem is terrible luck. That being said if you buy an xbox you will go through 9 in the time you went through 3 playstations...however Xbox has a longer warranty so that might be just what you need.

brennan7777
in all fairness to xbox 360 i've gone through 3 xbox's each having about 9-10 month life on them. I doubt he would have gone through 9 of these in under a year. Lets not go crazy on the exaggerations.

Dude I suggest take a15-20 minute break every hour of gaming. Not only will your ps3 need the break, so will you.

Renzokucant

i didn't use a swiffer cloth to wipe off the dust on my first 2 ps3s that broke. i did it on my 3rd because everyone was saying it probably broke because you didn't keep it clean of dust. i seriously doubt that was the reason it broke. its like a soft dry towel towel i used to wipe off any dust every week.

[QUOTE="Bow-T_88"]lol @ ur sad case and me not reading it. Ps3's dont break, people break ps3's coolkid93
True. And if you were playing Killzone2 then that might be the problem! That game is cursed! Alot of people who's ps3 had the YLOD OR in your words ps3's broke had that disk stuck in their ps3! :P:lol: Sike just kidding.

The last thing I played befre it stopped reading discs was Killzone 2. As a matter of fact it froze, I restarted and it hasn't read a disc since. That game may as well be cursed.

my ps3 is plugged into a power strip, i use it because i figure it protects electronics from power surges and i figured it was the safest thing to do. i didn't quite understand your post but are you saying that is whats causing the problem?

the first 2 ps3s, i kept the ps3 right next to my tv on the tv stand. but the 3rd ps3 i put the ps3 on its own stand far away from everything else to let it have more air and away from other electronics that might radiate heat onto my ps3.

i've been only playing about 1 or 2 sim games of madden at a time since last summer. last time i played so many hours at a time was mgs4 last summer (and it did break when i first started playing the game), i really havent had time to play many addicting games since classes started. but i do watch movies on ps3, which can last from 2 to 4 hours, but that should be reasonable, sony shouldn't expect people to turn off their ps3 in the middle of a movie just to let it have a break.

also to those who spoke about their 360s breaking like 5 times a year... that sounds insane. i definately dont think i would want to change to 360, or are the new 360s generally failure free? also i still havent decided what im going to do. how much does gamestop buy old ps3s for nowadays? like some of you advised maybe i am better off selling it and buying a new ps3, at least that would be new and would come with a 1 year warranty as opposed to a refurb launch ps3 with a 3 month warranty. i just don't know if i can afford that or if that guarantees that a new ps3 wouldn't break.

That's either poor maintenance on your part or plain old bad luck.

Stop buying 60gigs and pick up an 80/160 gig. Problem solved. Sony did the same thing as Microsoft by rearranging the hardware inside the unit.
