I've had the 40GB PS3 for just over a year and I'm not entirely sure what's wrong with it. I can turn on my PS3 and all the users show up, but then when I pick what user I want to get on it loads and nothing happens. It doesn't freeze because I can see the wavy line still moving in the background. I never had any problems with it, but I recently upgraded my PS3's hard drive to 500GB less than a month ago. For the past week my PS3 has be acting kinda funny. Long loads, resetting my theme, many corrupted files from the PSN store, etc. I'm thinking maybe my new hard drive crapped out on me. I'll put back in my old one and see if anything changes, but until then does anybody have any idea what could be wrong with it? I haven't seen the YLoD yet so hopefully that's not the problem.

yeah that really sounds like a HDD related problem if youre getting a bunch of corrupt data, go head and put your old one back in and see if its better.

btw what is the exact model of HDD your using?

It's the Western DigitalScorpio Blue WD5000BEVT 500GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

It got good reviews, but who knows. Maybe I got a dud.

I might end up doing that. Luckily it's only been 20 something days since I bought it. I'll put back in my old one and if it works I'll ship it back off to newegg.

Oh and just curious, the general warranty for the PS3 only lasts 1 year, right? Just asking in case it turns out to be my PS3 instead of the hard drive. Would the warranty cover this kind of thing even if the warranty was up? I'm never 100% sure how these kind of things work :?

yeah the warrantys 1 year and it would cover it if it were within the year, it it was past that it would cost $150 to fix.

Well I just put in my old HDD and it's working just fine. I guess it was the new hard drive's fault... I'll send it in and hopefully have better luck with the next one.

It didn't have viruses because I bought it brand new, plus it had to be formatted several times, and I know I set it up right. It worked fine for about a week, then it started getting buggy and then it just dropped dead. I've never heard of a PS3 getting a virus, but I suppose it's possible...

I don't suppose there's anyway to transfer my data is there?

Formatted several times?

This is a huge misconception that you need to format the drive before putting it in your PS3. THIS IS NOT TRUE!

I put my new harddrive 250gig in my PS3 directly from the antistatic bag turned it on the PS3 said it needed to format I hit ok and wallah never had a problem. Honestly before you send the drive in I would delete partition info and slap it back in your ps3 and let it do the formatting (if you formatted before putting it in your PS3 the first time).

yeah but if it took him several times to get it formatted there might be something wrong with the hdd. cause i agree with you it should have only had to be formatted once.

first off there is no known viruses for the ps3, because it would be a big waste of time to develop one specifically for the ps3 OS. Also im just guessing, he probably formatted his HDD multiple times because it was giving him issues (wouldn't you try that too?)

and to TC you might be able to if you can get it working long enough (you said it wouldn't even let you choose users so its probably scrap at this point) but i suppose you could always connect it to your PC and try to recover data from it

TehSonofUgly

Yes, I would. He never specified how he formatted, weather he was using a PC (which I've read alot of posts of people doing that) or if he used the PS3. I would hook it to a PC and remove partition info and put it in the PS3 to create the partition and format (which will be automatic). If he used a PC to write the partition info and reformatted from the PS3 that would do nothing if the partition info were corrupt.

It automatically formats it when you put it in (you said that later on, but I cut it for space). I did that twice so it should have been bug free.

So is there a way to back up my hard drive in the state it's in now using a PC? I think the problem is mostly in the hardware of the hard drive and not with the data. If you could elaborate on how to remove the partition info and do all that other stuff it might help. I only have about a week left on my warranty and I'm just trying to do whatever I can before giving up and shipping it back to newegg.

well i think its also the hardware in your HDD too so it may not work. If you want to try to back it up with your PC you have to open your PC and connect it with a SATA cable and power cable, then your PC should just recognize it. when your on your pc just go to 'My Computer' and find the HDD (probably be drive F: ) then find all your save data and copy it.

Ok I'll give that a shot. Hopefully it works well enough for me to at least open it in My Computer... If it doesn't work it's no big deal. I'll just have to replay some of Dead Space on Impossible if I can't get it. Luckily I've just been playing a lot of online games lately and all the stats are kept on servers instead of my PS3 :)

I'm not sure what you mean by cut for space. As far as backing up your data on a PC I don't think that's possible other than an imaging program which would not do you much good if data on the disc is corrupt chances are it will be corrupt in the image.

NOTE DELETING THE PARTITION WILL ERASE ALL DATA.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309000

I'm assuming you have xp but if you have vista the steps should be about the same. After you delete the partition do not create a new one. Just put it in your PS3. I wouldn't save space on the drive unless your putting linux on your PS3. You should just get an enclosure for the original drive you took out of your PS3 if you havn't already.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817392010

If you have your original drive and still have your stuff from before you upgraded you can always create a back up of it with the PS3 using a usb drive, then after the PS3 formats the 500gig do a recovery and atleast have that stuff.
