System worked fine until the 1.93 update.

Now when I insert a disc, (CD, DVD, BRay, PS3 Game, PS2 Game, PS1 Game, Etc), it won't autoplay, and it won't give me the option to play in the crossbar menu. Games won't show up in the games sections, movies won't show up in the video section, and music won't show up in the musc section of the crossbar.

I called Playstation Tech Support, and they had me reboot, clean disc, reset sys to defaults, etc, nothing worked and now they want me to replace the system, if I have the reciept, which I don't. Bought the thing on launch day back in November, it's a 60gig model.

Anyone have any ideas? Already took a can of air to the thing.

They said not without a receipt? If so, thats total BS.

The PS3 hasnt even been out a year so there is no reason to have to show proof of purchase date. I would imagine that the UPC from the box (which I hope you have saved) would be good enough.

Good luck with this.

Um, it doesn't matter what your returning/replacing... TV, PS3, dishwasher, pair of underwear... u always have to show proof of purchase... why is everyone acting like them asking for proof of purchase is a total shocker?

Many people have bought systems from places like Ebay. As far as I know, this is not in default of the wrrnty agreement.

But just for example, I used to own a BFG 6800 Ultra video card. The card fried, I called BFG and they sent me a new card before I had even sent in the old one. What did they ask for? My credit card info (incase I didnt send back the old card) and the old card sent back within 30 days. They are not losing much by not asking for the receipt. The bad PS3 can still be salvaged for parts for them to use in a refurbished system.

It is just that many companies do not require a receipt but rather a UPC or original box/serial for return/RMA.

For any company you'll have to show proof of purchase within the warranty period to show that you got it within the period. If you know how, make a fake reciept using the name of the store you got it. It wouldn't matter as they won't check that. I had the same problem with my PS2 slim. After over a year of flawless performance it did the same thing. Only I took the piece of plastic covering the console info( serial #, etc.) and the S/N smeared off and I couldn't get it replaced. I had to surveve almost 2 whole months sitting on my ass and doing nothing. Now I have the old model and so far so good.

If you bought it with a credit/debit card just get the statement from your bank to show when you purchased. You can also have whatever game store you bought it from re print your receipt. Furthermore, the person you talked to on the phone must have either been a newbie at his job, or just an idiot - because I've had two friends send in their 360, I've sent in a DS Lite - and none of us had to provide receipts. With Nintendo they take your cc information so that if you don't send in the unit you're replacing, they'll just charge you for a whole other one - I wouldn't think Sony or MS would be any different. Try calling them back and get a different rep.

Sony should have asked u to send it in to them. And they will fix it for u. I know from experience. U sound like a troll. Cuz if the ps3 isnt reading discs sony sends u a new ps3.

Dude, do this first!

Go to settings and look for restore system to default. It might work. I've had this problem before with my system.

As much as I hate to say it, I doubt it was the update that killed your PS3. I'm going through the exact same thing right now. My PS3 stopped reading discs on Wednesday while I was playing NHL 08. It won't read DVD movies, PS2 games, or PS3 games. I have to wait for Sony to send me a pre-paid shipping box so I can return my unit before they'll send me a replacement (refurbished) system. It almost makes me wish I'd spent the $100 on Best Buy's replacement plan. I've only had mine for a month and a half so I wish they could replace it with a new unit. I wish you luck in getting yours replaced.

According to Sony, it'll be free for me. The only bad thing is that I won't be getting a brand new PS3, but it'll be a refurbished unit instead. I'll have to ship back all of the provided hardware, controller, and cables and they'll send me the replacement PS3. I just wish it had fallen in Best Buy's 30 day exchange/return period because then I would have gotten a brand new PS3. NHL 08 was the only PS3 game I owned and the system died the day of its release. I'm trying hard not to go blow my money on a PSP or XBox 360 while I wait to get a working PS3 back from Sony.
