When you go to network settings and internet connection test, it will state what type of NAT you have.If it is NAT type 3 it will say you might have restricted access to in-game chat right? So what is most likely your problem as it was mine is that you have to enable your router's DMZ settings with your PS3. Sounds complicated right? Not really.....All you have to do if you have a NAT type 3 is go to your router's managing screen and search for DMZ settings.once you find it it will ask what is your PS3's IP. So all you have to do is go to network settings, then settings and connection status list and see the IP adress there. Then type that in the DMZ settings and enable it. Then do the internet connection test again on your PS3 and you should be an NAT type 2 by now.

The DMZ is located on your router. To put your PS3 on one you need to find the IP address of your PS3, I believe you can find it in system settings. Go into your router and find a tab or a setting called DMZ and enter the IP address you found on your PS3.

Another thing while your in your router, is to enable UPnP.  Â

Man, is that what the numbers mean? Xbox 360 has different NAT things as well. Being OPEN, MODERATE and STRICT. You pretty much have to be OPEN for everything to work. I have a NAT type 2 on my PS3 and always figured that meant MODERATE which would be kinda bad. If Type 2 just means I'm behind a router with no interference, then that is awesome.Â

All I know is when you get a bad nat type of 3 or above you get a system message warning you of the issues it will cause.
NAT is not a bad thing. Network Address Translation (NAT) changes your IP address when it leaves the router. So in essence is hides your IP behind a fake one most common is 192.168.1.x (x being the number generated by the router) This is a security issue in order to prevent networks from being hacked. This can create problems with games that need to connect to servers or if you are doing any sort of remote connection.
