There different ways, which model is ursOlympicSpex101
Welcome back.
If you were going to say the Fan Test for the 40GB - I heard that is not recommend and can actually break your PS3.
Clean out the inside using a light powered vaccuum cleaner or dust-vac. Don't use compressed air because it blows the dust INTO the PS3. Use a swiffer duster to clean the top of the PS3, it works really well.

why isnt it safe?OlympicSpex101
I am not sure, I just remember reading something that said it can burn out the fans or something. I believe Sony said it is not recommended.

In the update it says it can cause damage to the PS3. I don't know where the link is for what they refer too, but N4g is usually reliable.

yes but thats for the 60, I know through some friends that it isnt safe because it is sort of a hack, you do it without power cords and is too strong. Bad choice seen? It's safe for the 40GB, yet intentionally overheating the 20, 60, and 80 just to get the fans kicking in is not good.djHaQ
No it is not. It wears out the fan a lot faster than normally. The n4g post in my last thread and here is a whole playstation board with other people who agree: Board
Here is another n4g article.
"According the french site UltimatePS3, PS3 Fan Test can damages your system, the fans speeding up is a fail safe trying to get the bottled up heat out of the system, this can burn your CPU and GPU, this is confirmed by Sony. "
Seems like enough proof to me not to do the fan test. I wouldn't want to burn out the PS3. Keep doing it if you want, but you've been warned.

There's still no proof about the 40 gig test being dangerous, so dat be scandalous skippatryOlympicSpex101
In case you didn't see it.

I don't understand why you need so much proof. You can just simply use a light vaccuum and clean out the PS3, but instead you risk breaking a $500 electronic to get out some dust?! Whatever, I don't need to argue. Just don't come crying here when you get the yellow light.
if you have a 40gig mod....this might be interesting to know

Ugh
Some days...
uhh, my question wasn't answered.....Eagles931if the top does not come clean by lightly wiping it with a SOFT cloth then use a 50/50 mix of alchool and water. do NOT pore the sulution onto the ps3 just dampen the cloth and wipe it. Inside use a vacume. dont use compressed air. That will blow dust into the optics of the blue ray player. Or at least there is a posablity of that.
