Need help with Playstation online please!!

Hi all ! I need your help

I cant connect my ps3 online, I have a cable modem and it works on my pc, however when i go to network settings on ps3 there i make everything on automatic and I have it also wired connection but it still fails to know that i have a the cable in it, btw I dont know if my cable is ethernet but it did fit the whole in the ps3 and the wire is white, I heard that ethernet cables are white,

So can somebody tell me what I am doing wrong ? Please i really wanna play online :)

Does the password come with a ps3 or you mean my I.P adress ? sorry I kinda noob to this and have no idea what to do

Hi again, It didnt work.. well I saw that there was only a place where i could put a name and password and that was the PPPOE ? in the IP settings and it didnt work anybody can help me and show me a step by step how to do please? or a good guide because in the manual it doesnt say much really so please help me if you know anything about connecting a cable modem and how to do the settings please
