After a lot of tries, I managed to install Ubuntu 7.10 on my Ps3. The problem back then was that it didn´t support wireless connection at all (my Ps3 is conected via wifi and there´s no chance to hook it up to an ethernet cable, the router is in another room). To be more specific: whenever I went to System/Network, it only showed two options, wired connection or dial-up modem. So, I read a lot of FAQS and tutorials in several pages, in which some people said that you should update to kernel 2.6.22 in order to get wireless support (in addition, you had to install wireless tools and other applications that I can´t recall now). I did so, and this time when I went to Network settings it showed a wireless option. I configured it to acces my LAN through my router, and did all that commands thing in the console (that sudo ifdown eth0, iwconfig and all that stuff, before unchecking the free roam option at wireless connection), but I got no results. So I kept reading about it in some pages, when I came across with some posts in which they recommended to update to kernel 2.6.23. I did so, and since then Ubuntu just won´t start. Whenever I try to boot from the Kboot it freezes at that black screen. The only way I can boot Ubuntu is booting from the old Kernel. When I booted from the old Kernel (with the command "old" at Kboot) I found that some applications had been however installed, like wireless tools. But I didn´t get wireless support anyway. This is very frustrating, I installed Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon after having installed Yellow dog 6, because I couldn´t acces my connection through wifi with Yellow Dog (it said that some drivers were missing, I think it was a so called "Gelic" driver), but now not only I can´t get wifi to work, but also I have to boot using the old Kernel. Anyone has a solution for this? I already tried to edit the kboot.conf file through the gedit command at the console, but to be honest I wasn´t quite sure about what to change. I tried to copy the default settings from the old Kernel but it didn´t work. I read somewhere that Ubuntu had wifi support bak before the Ps3 2.10 firmware update, but after that wifi support was gone for Ubuntu on Ps3. Im currently downloading Yellow Dog 5.2 because I read it supported wifi on the Ps3. Anyone knows if it works? I really don´t want to install another OS, since the Ubuntu installation was really hard (I had that well known 15% freeze problem at the installation, but I managed to sort it out). I would really appreciate any help on this, because I really do not want to format my hard drive again, since I have MGS4, Devil May Cry 4 and GTAIV installed (and all the updates) on it. I wouldn´t want to go through all that again, plus installing another OS.

I would really appreciate any help on this.

Thanks a lot.

I love linux, but I can honestly tell you that putting it on Ps3 is just not worth it. It is a big hassle, and in the end it may just hamper the actual point of the PS3: to be a gaming machine.

I'm not saying to give up, but just make sure that you really want Linux on your PS3, because doing it just for kicks might end up costing you time and frustration.

Thanks for your answer. Yeah, I know it´s frustrating... But I really want this to work since my main computer is busy almost every time, and I thought I could use my Ps3 as a secondary one, mostly for internet connection, IM and other stuff, like text processing and other applications I might need to get some of my university work done. Nothing fancy, just that. I even upgraded my HDD to a 250 gig one, to be able to give Linux those 10 gig at the format options on the Ps3 without running out of space for demos, installations and other stuff on the Ps3 OS.

But you´re right, it gets frustrating after triying several different OS.

Over the weekend I have installed Ubuntu 7.10 on my 80 gig PS3 as well and I am also unable to access the internet. I have been trollling a lot on the internet not finding any one specific fix for this issue. I will post if I find anything. Good luck to you. PS3 handle: Tacoloft

I am not sure exactly how but I got the internet to Ubuntu running on my PS3 this evening. I read somewhere online a guy who had the same problem- he just unplugged his PS3-router-modem and let it all sit for about a minute-plugged it all back in and it worked. So I thought I would do one at a time and I started with my PS3. The only steps I took were to turn the PS3 off- (Rear switch) for about a minute, powered it back on enabled both the modom (out in fake number ect...) and the wireless setting- went into the network administration tool (I think it's what it's called) and made sure to select eth0 on the drop down for the network card- tested google and it was working. Don't know what else to tell ya other than to tweak with the setting a bit more and you will get it to work. Now the next hurdle is trying to find a friggin Flash player that will work on it now...:(
