I was in Best Buy yesterday and saw two huge stacks of Playstation 3's. One was a pallete worth of 60gb systems priced at 500, the other a pallete of 80gb systems at 600 dollars. Now, here is where I need help in my decision and why I'm having a hard time deciding on my own. There is not one game out right now for the PS3 that I have an interest in, Heavenly Sword looks nice and is out soon, but it is Dynasty Warriors from what I've exampled. I need to catch up on some games that I've missed from the PS2 - God of War I/II, Devil May Cry 3, and Final Fantasy 12. Can the PS3 handle these games with backward compatibility? If it cannot play all of these games, it just doesn't make sense for me to buy it right now.

Yes it can handle those games. Get the 60 GB while you can. It has better backwards compatibility.

GEt the 60GB while you can. It's actually the better of the two systems even though it has less HDD space. Why? you ask. Well the 60GB has hardware installed called the Emotion Engine. This allows you to play PS1 and PS2 games right off the disk with no need to install or emulate the games. The 80GB version doesn't have this and must emulate the games.

for 100 bucks plus tax you get a game and 20gb thats not bad, and any backward compatabilty probs will be fixed with system updates so the 80 gig is great too, however I own a ps3 and already own and have played EVERY game you listed above sooooo :) cant help you lol

Yeah. Before oyu purchase though, you should have some games on the ps3 that you're interested in, other there is no point getting one. There are tons of great games out and coming out like Warhawk, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Killzone 2, Final Fantasy 13, MGS 4, Ratchet and Clank: TOD, Heavenly Sword and dozens more. Here is a listof 125 exclusive titles coming out for the ps3, i reccomend you check it out and find some you're interested in before purchasing it.

Oh wow, I remember hearing that the PS3 had all of the physical components of the PS1/PS2 which is what made it expensive. So the 80gb system is a way for sony to cheapen manufacturing... I've experienced slow compatibility upgrades with the Xbox 360, took quite awhile for games to be compatible. and in a lot of cases for the sake of newer versions of games, they weren't ever made compatible. I'm going to keep trolling around, but I may own a 60gb ps3 by the end of the day.

wait till next year. by that time some games will be out for the system. dont do what i did. i regret buying it, i still play my ps2 games. all the games on ps3 suck right now. heavenly sword does not justify you spending 500 or 600. if u buy it now, after u get used to the ps3 and the fact u have 1, its boring and disappointng cuz there r no games. there is a rumored price drop again for christmas, and next yr some good games will be out. so just wait till then, or u'll just regret it like me.

Wow did you even read his post?

If he waits till next year tehn he wont be able to get the 60gb and teh ee chip. He already has a 360 and he wants to play ps2 games that he never played so i say go for it. He will also be able to buy any ps3 games in the future that hes interested in.

so you dont like games like:

  • Loco Roco
  • Wipeout HD
  • GT prologue
  • Ratchet and Clank
  • Uncharted
  • Folklore
  • Socom
  • Heavenly Sword
  • Haze
  • UT3

?????

Yes the games for next year are 10 times better than the ones for this year but the OP needs the 60gb version for backwards compatibility.

If you want the use the PS3 alot for its backwards support, go for the 60 gb, It can play all older games. The 80 gb cannot play all of them, most but not all.

I need to catch up on some games that I've missed from the PS2 - God of War I/II, Devil May Cry 3, and Final Fantasy 12. MetalDeath101

Look. All these games are best sellers so there is like a +99% chance they will be compatible. People say the 80GB is only 85% but do you really think that in those 85% are best sellers like the games you mentioned? Come on people...

FF8 was a rather good game that works on my 60GB model but not the 80GB one.

I'd go with the safer model. And you can always upgrade your HDD to some massive amount like 250GB later anyway. The HDD is easily swapped out and you can use any laptop HDD you want (you know, unlike some other company's machine)

get the 60gb.  no offense but you don't sound like a hardcore enough gamer to where you will need the extra 20gb.  i dont even think ill need it and i love the downloadable games!  plus it saves you 100 bucks to go get all those ps2 games you want used.

I would go for the 60gb also. I own a 360 and it sucks not being able to play all of the old games right out of the box. The 60gb PS3 allows you to not have to worry and wonder if a ps2 game will play in your ps3. If you got the 80gb version you would most likely have to wait for Sony to issue patches to play old games.

Also, if there are no games that interest you on the ps3 at the moment, you can use it as a Blu-Ray player. Blu-ray movies make me weep in amazement.
