yeah well she's warming up those vocal chords ladies & gentlemen. lol.
what does that article say? I don't have a membership etc theresvenskamerikan
on a conference call of all the big wigs at Netflix the main guy said that he believes the format war is over and that BluRay has won and that even Warner (investors in HD DVD) have licensed out their material on BluRay. Only Universal is still HD DVD only.
so in a nutshell he feels the format war is over and they're going to be looking at pricing for when they start offering bluray discs.
ps: it's free to join. and you don't get any spam. they have a lot of cool articles there. just an FYI.
I registered so the rest of you didn't have to. Here's the full story.
"A next generation DVD format war isn't good for consumers or the industry. When I spoke with Steve Swasey, Director of Corporate Communications, in September he stated Netflix was concerned about a fragmented market and hoped for consolidation. Neflix CFO, Barry McCarthy, touched on this topic during an investor conference call yesterday. In addition to the typical positive company spin and business opportunities you hear in these presentations, McCarthy declared Blu-ray the winner of the next generation DVD war and speculated on high-def disc pricing. It's yet to be seen whether or not their Blu-ray proclamation is premature."
"Netflix says: As many know there's been a format war. Two formats have been proposed as a successor to DVD, one sponsored by Warner primarily and one sponsored by Sony. Warner is HD DVD and Sony is Blu-ray. I think it's pretty clear that Blu-ray has won. Even Warner has agreed to license and to release technology to Blu-ray, only Universal hasn't made a commitment at this point, so I think the format wars are a thing of the past and I think it's going to be Blu-ray. I think the content will get priced at a 20% premium. I think it's going to roll out slowly over time."
Notice they don't say anything about cutting support, but they do mention wanting to simplify the market. So that might mean that they will pick for consumers...
I'm not sure if the "war" is truly over but with Netflix and Blockbuster both supporting Blu-ray I'm thinking that over time HD-DVD will disappear. I just hope that the number of people who purchased a lot of HD-DVD content and players are small.

seriously. i didn't purchase either but my dad got an HD DVD player about a year ago from costco. but after he saw my ps3 he bought one and returned the HD DVD player (i love costco).
and while the war may not be officially over. Blockbuster, Netflix, all the major movie studios (Disney alone is HUGE) except Universal...it's only a matter of time at this point. HD DVD may be on it's last leg soon.

exactly. that and the fact that they discussed bluray pricing are pretty clear signs who they're rolling with.

I would agree. I think that Netflix has the money to do the research and determine which medium over a long period of time will most likely take over the market. I've heard off chance stories that both Blu-ray and HD-DVD might be replaced very soon. I hope that's not true. I don't think that any movie will need over 50GB of storage in the near future. If they do replace Blu-ray then that means that new generation of HD TV's will also come out. That would suck as well considering my family just got our first 1080p HD TV. Also from Costco. I love them too.
netflix is garbage. Go with Blockbuster All Access.NavigatorsGhost
XD sorry Blockbuster is switching to blueray its more popular more than 70% of movies rented there are blueray
