Turns out Sony and Netflix have finally come to an agreement and Netflix Streaming video will be available on the PS3 by the end of the year. The new functionality will be done with a Blu-ray disc that you can get from Netflix with as little as a $8.99 package. The disc will use the BD-Live feature on the disc [yea finally a good use for it].

There are not a lot of details about it on the Netflix website yet, but if you do a search for PS3 then you will be taken to a page where you can reserve a copy of the disc to be sent to you as soon as it all gets set up.

Yet another XBOX 'exclusive' kicked to the curb.

It's a service that allows you to rent movies. It's kind of like Gamefly, but instead of renting games, you rent movies.

Oh ok thanks, doubt i'd ever touch it but it's nice to know the PS3 is extending it's online features.

Why? It is better functionality then if you have to use the PS3 interface. If they are actually going to be using the B-Live feature, then basically you are going to be logging into Netflix's website and using their engine. No need for software updates or changes to the PS3 firmware.

Afraid you have to get up off the couch and put in a disc? That is sad.

Yes it is

The Netflix service offers content delivered in lower quality then your regular cable TV. For most users it's a situation where it's not as good but it's easy.

Adding the disc makes it not that easy anymore.

Yes, and the PS3 only holds one....single....disc

So that means whatever you're doing you need to eject it and throw this in to watch something then swap it back out

If the service didn't need dics then it would be used much more then the option we have to settle for

Cool, I just cancelled Netflix for Blockbuster because you can pay the same price and get blu-ray. Felt I wasn't doing my PS3 justice by never playing blu-ray movies.

This is great for netflix users like me, because now instead of streaming to my pc I can stream to my ps3 (big tv) all for no additional cost, and while there were methods of streaming the netflix queue from your pc onto your ps3, they weren't perfect or nearly as accessable as this imo.

Good move, should help netflix pick up some more subs which is nice as well. It's a great service.

I'm not sure if you guys are seeing Jaysonguy's point here. The whole purpose of Netflix is the ability to stream video instantly (without physical media). Sure you can receive DVD's in the mail if you wish... but the way the industry is going, the digital media is the future. Sony keeps preaching that they're making the PS3's UI more simple and accessable for all gamers/users. With that being said, having to use a disc to access Netflix kinda defeats the purpose and makes using it on the PS3 sort of inferior to other outlets such as PC. By adding the disc, it seems as if you'd be taking a step backward in the whole "simplification" process. We should be able to access it in the XMB and watch instantly. It's not about being lazy, or complaining that you have to take out whatever disc is in and replace it with the NF disc.

Darn you, sony!

You just completly destroyed the last reason on my "Why I shouldn't sell my 360 for a PS3" List.

I love using my Netflix subscription on my 360, but if I can get bluray through it, free online play, and an easily upgradeable harddrive, I'm sold.

I'm just gonna have to find me a 60gb or an old 80gb. I need the backwards compat.

It's not about being lazy

No, it really is about being lazy. It's also probably a bit of "I like to complain about everything and anything" mixed into it.

It's a disc, that will require maybe 10 seconds to put into your PS3, and then you will have access to thousands of TV shows/movies/etc. Next people will be crying about how their PS3 doesn't turn on when they enter the room and that they have to push a button.

It will be on a disc for now to get it out there asap. They will eventually add it to the XMB in a firmware update. The disc is just to run the app, later the app will be install right in the firmware. If we had to wait for Sony to actually implement it into the XMB right away, it would take much longer. This way Netflix have taken initiative and created their own BD-Live disc in the meantime.

Wouldn't you want to not use a disc? Or are you one of the weird ones? It would suck if you lost the Netflix disc and had to search 30 mins for it or order a new one just to stream a movie while the 360 guys dont even have to worry about it. I hate it when you people complain about people complaining, especially when its about a legitimate problem.

And I would cry about my PS3 not turning on when I walk in my room if my Xbox does.

It sounds cool. I don't see a big deal of putting a disk in. BD live is pretty cool and will probably give us added features. Renting a Blu-Ray at Blockbuster is still the best option if you want the best picture quality.

Folks, let me just say about the disc you need to get, there is nothing on Netflix's website that says you need to have the disc in your PS3 to watch streaming movies. For all we know it is a one-time install, and will probably be replaced with a firmware update in the near future.

Yea using the BD live feature for Netflix may actually add features, such as setting up your queue (adding and taking out movies) and might just add a little help to the picture quality aswell (not sure on that one) maybe. Its going to be interesting to try this out, I use PlayOn right now which is awesome, but this may just give a better overall better experience.

Wow, you guys must have your couches and TVs a mile apart to be complaining about needing a disc for netflix.

What do you guys do when you need to change the disc in the PS3 to play a different game or watch a different DVD?

I'm glad I didnt spent 30$ for Playon yet since this is going to be free.

Thank you for getting it

The whole point of this version of the Netflix service is to watch anything instantly

The PS3 version wont be watch instantly, you'll still need to insert a disc

If this is watch instantly then using that logic every single game is play instantly and every single movie is watch instantly

Jaysonguy

I guess those people are too lazy to go to their mailbox to get netflix discs. Or too lazy to walk over and pee in the toilet. Or too lazy to do any of the other activities that involve the same amount of effort as inserting a disc into a ps3. I know the human race is lazy, but if some of the laziest people in the world, video gamers, can bring themselves to walk over to their console and insert a disc with a negligible amount of weight, I think we can do it to watch movies. If there is any deal breaker it will be the 9 dollars it cost for netflix. Better than the 50 bucks a year my buddy pays on top of that to watch netflix and play Halo online.

@ JKnaperek: yea.. but some movies take a while to be available. If this netflix offer as many movie and they offer online, then :D:D

[QUOTE="tlc1145"][QUOTE="Jaysonguy"]You need to have a disc in the machine for it to work?Sorry, no diceThat's going to be the ealbreaker with most users.Jaysonguy
Why? It is better functionality then if you have to use the PS3 interface. If they are actually going to be using the B-Live feature, then basically you are going to be logging into Netflix's website and using their engine. No need for software updates or changes to the PS3 firmware.Afraid you have to get up off the couch and put in a disc? That is sad.

It's the reason DVR's are more used then VCR's and DVD writers in their primeAnd the thing is that DVR's give the same quality as cable where you're losing quality herehere has to be a trade off

maybe SOME users, but I really doubt that most.

The only thing that may be a questionable for me if I`ll do it or no, is that i do not watch enought movies as to make the 9US$ monthy be worst it...

Oh god, that could take upwards of 30 seconds. Oh wait, I have to do that to watch a DVD as well. Hmmmm...maybe it won't be so bad.

Jaysonguy

Thank you for getting it

The whole point of this version of the Netflix service is to watch anything instantly

The PS3 version wont be watch instantly, you'll still need to insert a disc

If this is watch instantly then using that logic every single game is play instantly and every single movie is watch instantly

I am crying in the fetal position right now, thinking about how much time I have wasted in the past putting VHS, DVD, and Blu-Ray into machines. I haven't left my couch for over a year, and now what am I going to do! Those discs are so heavy, and who knows the last time I have been to my mailbox, let alone to receive any of my netflix discs. My dog usually gets them for me, but since I have been on the couch, I haven't fed him, and he is probably decaying on my kitchen floor. I was really hoping that I would be able to just press a button and my netflix appear. But now.... there is no reason to live anymore. I am leaning over to reach under my couch to receive my crossbow I use against intruders. I am now pointing it at my fac...

I hate it when people complain about people complaining about people complaining. Lets keep this going. Oh, and yes I would rather not have a disc. But I personally don't give a s&$% whether I have to put in a disc or not. If that is a problem for you, then you know you are going to die of heart disease, diabetes, or rectal cancer.

I'm pretty sure "instantly" means you DON'T have to wait for the content to download before watching it. I agree using a disc does seem kinda lame, but how it is any different than getting up and putting in a disc to play a different game???? also the press release says "initially, watching movies instantly streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system will be enabled by a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members." Maybe SONY will add the feature to XMB so the disc won't be needed. I'm looking forward to see how well this will work.

No, you will still need to have a Netflix account that allows you to watch netflix content online. ($8.99/mo and $10.99 if you want blu-ray movies)... I use the $10.99 plan... well worth the money IMO...
