like me i havent played any FF games, but becuase where i live PS2 games cost 20 dollars more than PC games and i alwayz end up buying them, (PS3 cost 40 dollars more :-( ), also seeying numbers like 13 beside the game titles taunts me a lil bit, i dont know if i could follow the story
but i do have GOW games, both 1 and 2 and i have to say, its the best action-adventure series i ever played, go buy them
I got into Final Fantasy a couple of years ago, I though that I had to play Final Fantasy I to understand II and so, but thats not true, the stories in Final Fantasy have basically nothing to do with each other, you could play XII, then X, then VII and they would still be great games, they all stand on their own.
God Of War I was OK, never played GoW II
God of war is a great adventuring game with lots of gore, blood, and difficulty to go along. You don't really need to buy the first one, but it does put the second game in perspective if your interested.
I would say it's never too late to enter the FF series. Being that each game has its own unique storyline, universe, and is an experience in itself, you have no need to worry about missing out on something or not understanding whats going on.
My advice though is to rent the games. It sounds like you may have a preference for the type of games you like to play, so I would suggest trying them out befor you go and drop any cash. And I agree, FFXII is a great place to start.

Each FFs are unique from each others, so you can hop in at any time. For the few ones that were sequels, they were not given a numerical value.
I started with FF1, but most people started with 7. Nothing wrong with it.
But GOW2 is the direct sequel to GOW, so you might as well get those games before getting GOW3 when it comes out on PS3.
