will I understand anything in mgs4?

yuh, you wouldn't even like MGS4 if you don't know the story. I played MGS2 and 3 and didn't enjor them or understand them till my friend explanded MGS1 and to story. So read up first or play some of the first games and understand it firstDuhQbnSiLo
I don't know, my first real venture into the Metal Gear franchise was MGS2 and I pretty much caught on to what was going on. I didn't know much about 1 at all and before it. I only really played 1 after 2. Sure things still fell into place, but I still knew what it was about for the most part. Some people say it was pretty hard to figure out, but I don't really understand what was so hard about it? Even the people on X-Play "with degrees who CLAIM to be smart and hit you with big words" couldn't even figure it out and said it was confusing LOL

Hell no. Heck i played all the Mgs games and i am still confused by it. But i just love games. The story is difficult but interesting and filled with a ton of memorable characters, crazy plot twists, and moments that will just simply shock you. You should play them all.

I think people can probably get what is going on, is more of like the incredible amount of information and stuff that happens in each one that can make it hard. MGS is probably the least complicated of the three that are out, as it is the most straightforward and short of the bunch. If there is one MGS that is confusing, that would be MGS2.
This is what I would do, as the original PS MGS would probably be hard to get, you should get MGS: The Twin Snakes for gamecube if you have one, as that is a remake of the first. It is a little over the top in its cut-scenes, something not share by the original, or either 2 or 3, but I'll do a good job at explaining it anyway. Then get MGS2 and MGS3 for PS2, and you are set. If not, wikipedia or fansites would be the way to go, but I seriously suggest you play them, as they are some of the best gaming experiences you'll ever have.
[QUOTE="Denji"]Honestly though. I thought MGS3 was more straight forward than the other 2

Yeah, MGS3 was pretty straightforward also, like I said, MGS2 is the only one that goes a little wacko.
I thought the coolest thing was when they were telling me to turn off my PS2 lol

Yeah, how about the Colonel telling Raiden about Rosemary leaving some other guy's room?
"I am sorry I made you pay for dinner last time", Fission Mailed, such good times....
All of the Metal Gear Solid games are AMAZING!
What I love the most is that although the games are linear in structure, there are multiple ways to get from place to place and accomplish objectives. Each playthrough is different. I used to think that the games would be way too hard to play without the radar, but now that I've beaten all the games, I don't think I would ever want to go back..
As for the story? Yeah you could look up the story, but that doesn't do the series any justice. You have to really play the games to understand what the heck is going on. Go on ebay and look for the original Metal Gear Solid for PS One. I got a copy of the original for about $30 with shipping. Start there...that way you have first hand experience of the adventures of Solid Snake. MGS2 focuses more on the story of Raiden and shows off Solid Snake from another hero's perspective. The story can get a little confusing at times and Kojima puts in parts that completely mess with your head, but it's cool. MGS3 focuses on the story of Big Boss, the solider who was cloned to create Solid Snake and his brothers Liquid and Solidus.
If you can find it, I highly reccomend looking for MGS3: Subsistence. It has a new camera angle that really opens up the environments and makes the game more immersive. It also comes with versions of Metal Gear: Solid Snake and Metal Gear 2. I have yet to play these 8-bit classics, but I will be sure to check them out before the release of Metal Gear Solid 4.
I'm with you on the same boat..I don't know the story that well. I played MGS1 on PSone and that was such a long time ago. I got portable ops for psp and didn't really understand most of it but it kinda made sense..it was fun for a bit but to tell you the truth I never finished the game. I don't know if it was because awkward controls or because of the story.kinq
Um, most people dont understand MGS games anyway. The first one I played was MGS3, and it made 100% sense to me and was much more enjoyable than MGS2.
If your serious about wanting to get into MGS 4 I highly recommend you get ahold of a copy of each version of the game since they are all basically avialbe in some port or orignal version or borrow through a friend. its best to play from mgs 1-4 instead of time line order since the story will not make much sense.
So if your a fan of japanese story telling and don't mind a game that is 2/3 cinematic MGS is a great series to fall in love with and I own many versions of the games and most of its ports. But if you don't like japanese story telling and seeing alot of cinematics you may not like it :/ But if your okay with it I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Also after you beat MGS3 and got a psp play portable ops on the PSP then it goes onto MGS 4. Metal Gear Acid on the PSP doesn't really matter in the storyline since its kind of a sub story I think that doesn't effect the events of the other games whatsoever.
man i am proud that i beat number 1,2, and 3,
the whole reason i bought a ps3 is basically for the heaven sake of playing the number 4.
their gameplay and story is something that you will never experience from other games.
it is a MUST list for you to get and play.
You should play MGS 2. It's about 20$ from any store in greatest hits section.
MGS4 is a direct sequel to MGS2. Apparently all of the question and story will wrap up in this installment. MGS4 could also include plot from MGS 1 and 3 but it was said it's a direct story continuation from MGS2 which again I'm highly recommending anyone who is expecting MGS4 to play.
Of course there will be story pieces from MGS 1 and 3 which are all connected with each other, but if you have never played Metal Gear and are anticipatingMGS4 (who isn't :)), at least play MGS2 which is where MGS4 story continues.
It's ideal, if possible to know them all.

agreed...I love the series, but the plots can become oh so confusing...it's like a movie you have to watch a few times in order to understand everything...
You have to play MGS 1. I unfortunately sold my copy and my PS1 years ago. Doh! But I kept MGS2 sons of Liberty. WOOHOO!
