Wasn't sure if i should've put this in games? Anyway, I'm buying MGS4 without playing the series. Will the gameplay sell the game for me, or is this completely stupid to buy without knowing the story? Anyone else in this boat, I'm just looking to buy a solid PS3 game. I don't really want to play the others, so should i buy this?

MGS games have always been really awesome. If you preorder the game i think you may get a dvd that explains the story plus it will include the beta code for mgsonline's beta test. If you decided you don't want it you may be able to sell the dvd and game to someone else.

I've never played a MGS game before so that is why I bought the MGS Essential Collection.

Unless you're really into convoluted, cheesy crap, I think the gameplay is going to be your biggest draw. And that's unfortunate, because the MGS series has always had REAL clunky mechanics.

Gameplay is not clunky, it only gets better with every game. I'd say you have to play the games prior to 4, otherwise you just wont' be as immersed in the game. If you got a gamecube, or don't mind PS graphics, you can pick those up. Another alternative is the MGS comic, which is really well crafted, but expensive. Just get the 2nd and 3rd games, they're pretty cheap now I think, and if you get hooked, you'll definitely finish before release.

I will admit I haven't played MGS3, but I think sneaking around and using CQC in the first two games is a chore. And why do I have to hold one shoulder button to raise my weapon, and then press a separate button to fire it?

The MGS series has a strange sense of humor, and constanly pokes fun at itself, which put off most people that are new to the series. (hardcore fans love it). Also, the games constantly cross the "4th wall". This means that the characters in the game seem to know that it is a video game.

The story is pretty convoluted as well. But that doesnt mean its bad. I personally like the series' complicated story.

The gameplay may or may not sell you over. MGS has seemed to value story and storytelling above all else, and you'll find that you'll be watching cutscenes and listening to conversations between the characters for what seems to be longer than actual gameplay.

Its almost necessary to play the other games in the series. You will be completely lost if you dont. The characters will be throwing names and terms out there that will be alien to you.

The first two games didnt have CQC, and you press one button to go into the first person view, and another to raise and fire your weapon. That makes sense to me...

Hold one sholder button to aim and another to shoot... Have you NOT played almost every shooter out in the past 5 years? LOL

They didn't call it CQC, but you had to grapple with people to submit them. And the first one didn't have a first-person perspective, it just required two buttons to fire like Resident Evil.

Well, if you think that taking enemies out, and sneaking, is a chore you're probably not an MGS fan I take it.

And I was assuming that you were referring to the second game when explaining how the first person perspective works.

I like sneaking around and taking people out stealthily, I just think MGS does a poor job of it. Splinter Cell is much more playable.

If you just absolutely don't want to play the others, at least preorder the game so that you can get the DVD that will catch you up to speed on the story. I bet after you watch that and play MGS4, you will just absolutely have to go buy the others. The story is just awesome.

Just because you arent partial to MGS's take on stealth gameplay doesnt mean it did a poor job at it.

Really? Splinter Cell is much more dull and boring and the story is always so forgetable.

Lol it's not MGS that does a poor job of it, it's you. There's a lot more factors to being stealthy in this game then just being seen. You leave footprints, make sounds, loitering when a guard has been taken out, etc.

You're right about the story, MGS is more interesting than SC, even if it is silly and a little bit stupid.

And sure, there's a lot involved in sneaking around, but controlling all of those actions is not nearly as fluid and comfortable as in SC.

Well this might cover the previous, It usually contains some information from the past alough you'd probably have GREAT fun playing MGS for the first time through the series.

Also you might be dissapoineted as this is the last one and then you cannot play it anymore whereas you could play through the whole series and then complete it all in the same year!

I Just don't think i could complete those 3 games by June. So either way the story is compromised. Oh well I'll watch the preorder DVD and buy the game on hype. How sad ha ha ha

You could easily complete them by the end of THIS month if you played straight.

Easy for next month.
