There is a lot of pro's and con's in the update. It could be a step towards something very nice in the end as all the former updates have been doing for the longest.
I like this friends list better actually and i like everything about the update. I dont know what you mean by no avatars tho and i can see how the short cuts would be annoying but im sure sony will address this in a later update that will let you turn them off if you want. but after all is said and done i think it looks WAY better then any other update so far.

Its the worst update they have released yet. It seems to me like Sony have released some sort of Budget firmware for the cheaper PS3 slim, with a tacky and cluttered feel. Unfortunately us original owners that forked out for the original with the beautiful XMB are in the same bucket. Sony; don't fix whats not broke.
If you haven't gotten it yet and don't really use PSN anyways, don't get it. Wait until sony fixes it. It's terrible. Font size is ugly and huge, the wallpaper blur effect is nauseating, the friends list horrendous, and the upper right hand corner that displays your gamercard has a constant stream of ads below it. This update redefined my perception of what a bad update is. I used to think the worst that could happen is that we get a bunch of crappy new features. Instead, we got a bunch of crappy new features and got many of the essential XMB features we already had changed for the worse.
I just upgraded to it today after hearing all of the criticisms. After it was finished, i lol'd so hard at all of those comments about it being horrible. There is NOTHING bad about it. People ask for too much these days without being patient.
