I recently got a ps3 and want to hook it up to internet wirelessly. Now, I am by all means "technically challenged" and have no clue where to start. I have the HP m7480n media center computer and a Linksys modem (model: BEFCMU10) just in case you need all that info.

Is there anyone that can help me get started? Please remember..... I'm an idiot and need things simplified=)

Thanks for your help!

You will need either a wireless router or a switch to start with

Well it looks like it's a non-wireless router so you have to get an ethernet cord (sales person should show you, it looks like a phone cable but larger)

Your router has various cords I suspect.

One going in and one going out to your computer.

basically the ps3 needs the ethernet cord (like the one going to your computer) to go from the ROUTER to ITSELF.

After that Inside the PS3 go to System then at the bottom Network Connections, Do automatic and you should be fine.

I'm just doing this off the top of my head, I have my ps3 set up wirelessly and with a whole bunch of other computers in a network etc etc.

Any please add on or tell me where I'm wrong.

EDIT: LOL my bad I thought you had a router, but you said cable modem.

You could hook it right up to the ps3, but then you wouldn't have internet on your computer.

You have to get a router. Once you do that then see the above.

Hey Jamie, I will be your partner in today's lesson of How to connect your PS3.

Ok by Linksys modem....Im assuming you mean a Linksys router. Linksys routers are usually blue and black.

If so, we are doing good so far.

First lets see if the connection works. Plug in the router by getting the ethrnet cable from your high speed modem into the back of the router. Then turn on your PS3, go to Network settings, Search for a connectiion. When you find yours, connect to it. Go somewhee to make sure the connection works, just open the web browser. If you can go to an internet page, the connection is good and ur done. If you want to put security on your router so only you can use it.....keep reading

It should have came with a cd, if so, insert the cd into your drive and follow the directions.

It will tell you how to configure your router, etc....

Now if you are planning on using Security on your router(which is recommended), select WEP-128 bit.

Follow the instructions from there, but remember to write down your security key(its a longggg row of numbers and letters)

Save everything(follow all the directions). Go to network settings on your ps3, search fo your network, type in the code, test connection and bam, ur done.

If you still have difficulty....just PM me and ill try to explain much better. Good luck with it

Thanks for responding so quickly. I dont think I have a router, but it IS blue and black... I think its just a modem though. Then again, I get suckered into buying more expensive crap that I have no idea what it does. Let's assume that it's just a modem though.( hopefully, cuz if it IS a modem/router I'll be wasting some loot)

1. I have to buy a router

2. Hook router up to modem using ethernet cable?

3. Turn on ps3 and do all the settings as descibed above??

Is this it? Is there any other cables or anything I need to buy with the router?

Am I "getting" it?

That should pretty much be it. If you live far enough away from neighbors you could skip the security settings which would simplify your PS3 connection setup.

I kind of want to go wireless though, because I dont want a long ethernet cord going all throughout my house....since my computer is in one room and my wii and ps3 are in the living room. Yeah, I guess I should have metioned I'll be hooking up a wii too. Does this make a difference?

LOL Whoops, I got modded for not having content though I edited the quote, lesson learned.

Thanks for responding so quickly. I dont think I have a router, but it IS blue and black... I think its just a modem though. Then again, I get suckered into buying more expensive crap that I have no idea what it does. Let's assume that it's just a modem though.( hopefully, cuz if it IS a modem/router I'll be wasting some loot). You don't have a modem/router, so the easiest way to get internet o your computer and PS3 is to get a router. Also as I think about this I dunno if it's the correct thread to do this in, so message me or that other guy.

1. I have to buy a router? YES

2. Hook router up to modem using ethernet cable? YES

3. Turn on ps3 and do all the settings as descibed above?? YES

Is this it? Is there any other cables or anything I need to buy with the router? PS3 should automatically hook up to it if you are doing it wired. If you get wireless it gets complicate since you should have protection. Google has some tutorials on this. Oha and make sure you buy two ethernet cables since the cable that comes from your modem will go to the router and from there the other two will go to your computer and PS3.

Am I "getting" it?

I suggest you getting a wired router and just have the cable going to the PS3 since you ar ein an apartment. It's safe and you don't have to worry about securing it like you do wireless. You could get a wireless router and just use it as a wired one for now and when you wantto use wireless down the road you will not have to buy one.

Once you have a wireless router there's no issue with having the Wii, PS3, and PC all connected at the same time. The security portion of the wizard will help you walk through the setup for your router, just make sure to print out the settings and repeat them on the Wii and PS3. It's not really that hard, just a headache retyping a string of characters the length of your forearm.

The PS3 would be no problem but the Wii would need another gadget to connect wirelessly. The wireless router for the PS3 isn't that hard to set-up. One big thing to remember do not get talked into getting a N series router, the G series works great on the PS3. I have an older D-Link Extreme G router and am running several things off of it with no problem.

Very good advice. N's are expensive and unnecessary for your purposes.

Depending on where your router is, you might want to go wired. I got my PS3 and 360 since my wireless router is only a few feet away from my TV and the only thing that is wireless is my Wii (since I don't want to spring $30 on the LAN adapter). The reason being is you will always get a faster connection wired than wireless unless you spring for an expensive wi-fi router made especially for wireless gaming. It might not be a big issue in some games but when you update your PS3 or download a new game it will usually be faster wired.

But if you do want to go wireless I suggest getting a fast wireless router with WPA security (to make it a little harder for your neighbors to leech off of your connection). Tigerdirect has a lot of good choices, and once you get one you can connect everything wireless like my setup is (minus my 360 and PS3). Also, I usually change my WEK once every month or two since there are programs out there your neighbors can get that can crack the key in a matter of minutes. If not; I would suggest getting a Ethernet splitter if your router only has one port unless you want to keep switching the line between the PS3 and your computer.

yeah the reason why i suggest that is because they are cheaper and it basically plug and play.

Of course buying a wireless one and using that as a wired one for now is good. However since it's in an apartment and probably close together it's the safest and easiest thing to do. Hooking up the PS3 wirelessly and securely can be complicated if you wanna do it right.

For example (people who are not "familiar" with some ofthe below things)

MAC Address

Using your browser to find to do router settings

Keys

etc

And they tend to not really work that well with the PS3. I figured I would add that little tib bit of advise to keep some sales person selling this young lady something that wouldn't work that well.

These are the ones I'm looking at..... I may just use them wired at first and THEN switch to wireless down the road as suggested above.

D-Link Wireless N router DIR-615 at best buy for $49.99

Linksys wirless G with 4 port ethernet switch WRT54G2 for $49.99

Netgear 802.11 g Wireless $44.99

What should I go for? If I dont really have good options let me know... I do have some loot to put into it, I just wanna be sure I do the best AND simplest option.

Usually I avoid routers that cost less than games because of the speed. 54mbps is okay but I usually look for something faster. I'm not sure if the PS3 or Wii's wireless cards have faster transfer rates than that, I have to look that up later. If you are only using it for games and not for a laptop or something like that then there are routers that are specifcally made for game consoles. If you are going to start out wired you still need to spring for the LAN adapter for the Wii.

I would go for the Linksys router. For $49.99, it's a decent router with all the necessary basic features, and it's plenty fast enough for most applications.

The big advantage there is that there are tons of posts (like these!) on configuring these units to best work with the PS3.

There is a lot of misinformation in this thread. Jamie i sent you a message so it didn't get mixed up with all this stuff. All you need is a wireless router, both the wii and PS3 have built in wireless adapters called wifi. So all you will need is the wireless router, don't get a gaming router get a regular LINKSYS WIRELESS ROUTER and i would get type G. The one i have is WRT54G it works great but im also 2 floors above it so i don't think you will need one like that in an apartment. Again i will suggest a Linksys Wireless G router, or you can just check if there is any unsecure or unlocked connections that you can already connect to. Good luck.

Well, i have a Netgear router here in the U.K. and i havn't had any problems with the router as such, but because I'm still only 15 i didnt buy it, which means its kinda base-middle range, and it's not that special...

I think its 54mbp/s but the range is quite poor, and some days my PS3 (which is 4 walls away, *sigh*) will not even sign in to PSN.

If you can, keep your router close by!

Hehe, the girl gamers always get helped around here. Because some D&D playing sweat-hog thinks he's gonna sweep you off your feet with his support magic or something.

Anyway, the Linksys router is a good way to go. They're good products and they had good tech support last I checked. You'd be better off just going wired because you live in an apartment... so running a cable wouldn't be that tough. If you've got a Wii -- I see the Zelda avatar -- you have to hook that up wirelessly I think because I don't think there's an ethernet port on it for some reason.

So at that rate, we'll assume you have to go wireless. The router will have setup instructions inside the box.... it's really just plugging things in (modem to router, router to PC) and then just running software on the CD... it's the troubleshooting that can be tricky at times. And Linksys' tech support is pretty good about helping with that if you need it.

This thread will probably get locked because it's outside the scope of the PS3 topic, so if it does, the PC hardware discussion forum will help you out too. Again, mention you're a girl and you'll get more posts.

Ha! Atleast theres one great advanatage to being a girl =) I dont know what you mean about the whole psn number..or whatever.

I didnt get a chance to get the router last night, but Im on my way out in a bit to get it. I do have ratchet and clank....I really enjoyed it on ps2, so I figured I couldnt go wrong with that. I also rented Call of Duty 4 which seems pretty fun.... I may buy it. But all in all, I havent really had a good chance to play yet because we also got a wii and have spent a ton of time on it! I will give my ps3 some lovin tonight for sure =)

Jamie
