No option to format? I haven't swapped mine yet but I heard somewhere that you needed to preformat it to FAT32. I have no experience with this myself though.

Nope, all you have to do it pop in the new drive, it will format it first for you. I just swapped in a 320GB a few months ago
[QUOTE="chrisp003"]it says i have to update it to verson 2.42 or later and that hook it up using usb than push start and select at the same time
bwrector
That's nuts. Just update the firmware with your old drive in it, then pop the new drive in
i have 2.42 in it already i just dl 2.43 and and put it on my psp and try to up date it hope it works lol
so was it that easy to switch hard drives? i have the original 60gb, was just thinking bout getting a bigger hard drive for it. dont know what to do though.ShadowBass989
It's very easy. If you don't care about your game saves or game data, all you do is power it down, remove the plastic cover, undo one screw, then pop the drive out. Then you have four screws that hold the drive into it's platter. The reverse the proceedure :)
o well that is easy. so i guess there is not a way to save game saves??ShadowBass989
If all you want is just the saves (not the game data), just put in a USB storage device, go to your saves and one of the options is "copy". That will copy to the USB drive. Just repeat for each game save
It's almost stupid easy to do it, I kept double checking things - lol. The biggest PITA for me was waiting on the backup to an external USB drive (took about an hour)bwrector
Can you back up your PS3 to a external drive that already has stuff on it? Will the PS3 automatically create the folders it needs on the external drive?

If it is FAT32, you might be able to.
I didn't look at the file, I would assume it just creates a single backup file.

yea all i did was save my game saves on my psp than just cnaged it over it was really fast and easy it took like 5 mins to switch the hd and like 20-30 mins to install every thing again lol well worth it
u have been a lot of help, thanks a lot. just one more question my mind has on it about this subject. if i decide to back up my data, will it just save everything on that USB and i can continue to play my PS3 with no problem at all. or if i backup my data, i have to like switch the HDD first before it will act the same. i hope u can understand what i mean, im having trouble putting it into words.ShadowBass989
No problem! It's like you said at first, it's just a backup. I backed mine up one night, played it the next day, and then the following day I put in my new drive and "restored" the backup. So you are safe and I got what you are saying :)
