Hi there I am looking to purchase a PS3 for my little brothers and truthfully no nothing about gaming systems. I was wondering if is better to pay a bit more and go brand new or if used is still a decent option? I have been looking at some ad sites such as kijiji and have found some decent prices for consoles/ games etc. What are some things I should be looking for if I decide to take the used route? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

As Douglas Adams used to say, some things are an S.E.P. - "Someone Else's Problem"... And buying used hardware, you don't know why folks are selling or how they treated it for it's time in their home. They could have six cats and the thing is full of fur, you have no idea (and I have seen a console sprout cockroaches after buying from a garage sale - I don't mean to be gross or shocking, but you'd be amazed at what kind of funk can get into a piece of electronics given the cleanliness of the home it came from). When my sister bought one for my nephew, I advised buying the console new so that you have warranty and a place to go back to should there be any problems out of the box (and honestly, they're not nearly as expensive now as they were at the system's launch). If you buy from a stranger on the Internet, it's "Buyer Beware" and you really have no recourse after the purchase. Software is a different proposition, as you can see how it's been treated immediately and the newer Blu-Ray format is far more resilient than CDs or standard DVDs...

But I would say buy the console new. Hope this helps!

:)

I'd personally go the safe way and pay a few more bucks for a new console. That way you'll know that it SHOULD'NT be messed up in any way :P

I would recommend buying new as you never really know if the used system is in good condition or not. Also new systems come with warrannty while the used do not, so while buying used seems cheaper in the short term, in the long run it will add up to alot more if the system breaks or something.

Games on the other hand are usually fine to purchase used as long as the condition is still good/decent, but withsystems your better off getting a new one.

Just to be safe buy a New. When you're spending $300+ on something you don't want it to break.

Go new. What you should do is read reviews of people buying used ps3s and see if thats what u wanna do. Also if buying used online check the users product description and the users selling history read the reviews of that as well.

buy neww,BUT not from a retail store look online on ebay or amazon for new ps3's. Online is always cheaper, only buy from retail if you have a gift card or they are doing some crazy sale.

I bought 2 ps3's second hand, here is my story. First was a phat, overheated ALOT, lucky had 90 day store warrenty...the "shell" casing actually suggested kids may of abused it judging by the scratch marks... My second and current, also second hand is a slim, no problems despite...what appears to be a hand print that has somehow been made permanent to the system casing. If you're gonna buy second hand inspect, trial, purchase and make sure it has at least 3 months warranty, bad consoles will reveal themselves soon enough, any sign of issues (like mine freezing over relitivly nothing...) you got a dud.

Best to buy a PS3 new since they are only $299.99 for a new 160GB slim. But if you want to save a bit of cash you can buy a used console from EB/gamestop and save some money for $199.99

A good model was the 40GB PS3 phat which was one of the best old model Playstation 3's that was resistant against YLOD. Those can be found on Craigslist and kijji for $110.00-$140.00 if you really want to save money. (keep in mind that EBgames offers a replacement plan if you console dies)

It is better to buy new. But if you buy used get a Slimline 120 giger or if you have to buy a phat model The 40Giger is the best at resisting YLOD.

I would buy New it is the safest. But if you are low on cash you have some options as well.

Yeah i agree buy new, you'd feel terrible if you bought used and a week later it broke.. Not only would you waste money but you can't return it and fixing it would cost too much. At least with a new one you have a money back guarantee and also the manufacturers warranty oh and possibly be offered an extended warranty for 3 years or whatever for a price... Buying new is better on so many levels even though it costs a bit more.

Be safe and buy a new one. You never know what the previous owner has done to it.
