Hey guys, I just bought the 40gb yesterday. I know it cannot play PS2 and that really doesn't bother me since I lost or sold most of my PS2 games awhile back, I hopped on the 360 train for a few years. Now the 360 is a fine and dandy system, and I traded it in for a brand spanking new in box 40 gig. I may be missing something here but I have a few questions.

Why do I have the ability to turn off the main power in back? Is there something wrong with just leaving that on and turning the system off in front only? I turn both off just to be safe and cause it gives me piece of mind, but I didnt know if there was an actual reason.

Also, does every game let you save the data to the hard drive? I bought Sigma cause I miss NGB and I also got Heavenly Sword. I was on a 360 so I am definately taking a break from shooters. Heavenly Sword takes a long while to load in comparison to most 360 games, although those are shooters if that matters. Are most games like that or is it just that one?

One more thing, do demo downloads take long for everyone else? I got the Resistance demo and it took a good hour to download.

Anyways, great phenomenal system, really enjoying it. Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

well, for your first 2 questions, id like to know the answers myself.

as for your 3rd question regarding the time of the demo downloading process...it is long and tedious to me as well. then again, you have to remember that its all free, unlike the paid-for xboxLIV.

demos for me take much longer than an hour...so you're lucky to get yours in an hour. im not really sure why mine takes forever, and forever as in several hours.

The power switch in the back is there for the same reason it is there on a ps2 or a pc. If you cut it off from the front (or with the sixaxis), you are just putting it in standby and there is still some (minimal) power draw. There's nothing wrong with this. I never turn off my pc, ps2, or ps3 from the switch in the back, and have yet to see any problems.

And when you asked about saving to the HDD, do you mean like game saves, or are you talking about the game data that some games install to the HDD? Regarding save files, yes any game that saves, saves directly to the HDD, since there are no ps3 memory cards. Regarding the other, many ps3 games install a cache to your HDD in order to speed up load times. If you aren't going to be playing a game for awhile, you can delete this game data to free up HDD space, and then it will just reinstall next time you play.

As for the speed of downloading demos, it all depends on the demo. I've never timed it, but I think an hour sounds about right for many of them.

I will try to answer as best as I can.

I think you have to compare turning off your system with putting your PC in some sort of "waiting mode" or "sleep". While shutting the main power will be like rebooting your computer. I dont know the details but I figure that they may be compared. If you are about to turn off your gaming console and you know that you probably wont play any gamesfor a day, then it might be a good idea to shut of the console. Considering the fact thatjust turning your console off will just end up makingyour electricity bills higher.

I dont think there are any other way to save PS3 game data other thensaving it on the harddrive.

The length of the demo downloads are very dependent on yourInternett connection. If you have a high speedInternett then you should have faster downloads. If you share yourInternett connection with others thenthis will affect your download speed as well. keeping a clean and fast Internett connection is ecenssial for swift downloads.

Hope this helps.

If you have a wireless connection and others use your Internett connection, then this willaffect your online experience. Lets say you have 2 other users taking their share or percentage of your Internett Connection. This is a decissive factor for my Internett connection when I am downloading certain files from the web or through torrent programs.

If I have many operations running on my PC that occupies broadband space then this will affect download speed from other systems(such as a PS3). Keeping a minimum amount of operations running while downloading a demo is what I mean by keeping the line "fast and clean".
ofcourse, as a previous poster mentioned. The size of the demo you are downloading is an important factor.

Dont worry about the power off in the back, that's for totally turning off your PS3, to be continually connected to the internet and stuff, just turn it off in the front by holding down the touch-off-button-thing.

Every game saves to the harddrive, yes.

Downloads take me around 15-20 mins, but it depends on your internet, and connection stabiltyI suppose. 1 hour isn't bad! Some people have to wait a few hours more than that to play a demo.

You're in good shape my friend, enjoy your PS3.

Damn, that was quite a response from everyone. Thanks for all the help. And just to clarify, when I meant saving, I meant the cache, not game saves, should have clarified. Thanks again for all the help.

I have my system on a wireless network and there are a couple of laptops and a desktop shareing the same internet connection and I have never had a problem. My downloads demos and firmware updates usually only take about 15 or 20 minutes tops.

As for the switch in the back the only time I turn this switch off is when there is a sever thunderstorm close by. I usually just leave my systen on 24/7 (it's folding when not in use).

My downloads do take quite a while even if no one is on my network. I think the PSN is slow or the wifi in the PS3 is not as strong. I cannot validate whether either console is better, but I have a 360 and I do not experience the same issues. I have tried moving my router, re-adjusting my systems to no avail.Hopefully, future updates to the PS Storewill improve but right now it can be downright sluggish.
