Been gaming since Sega Genesis and SNES and have only played half-way through Final Fantasy III on the DS. Not sure why I stopped but I enjoyed it. I'm looking for the best one for somebody who is just starting to get into Final Fantasy to play. I was thinking FF7 since that game seems to have such a huge following, but I'm not really digging the whole industrial/futuristic design. I'm more into the medieval fantasy kind of stuff.

I'd recommend Final Fantasy IX, my favorite game in the Final Fantasy series.

It's steampunk, so you won't be seeing any laser pistols.

It sorta got a medieval feel to it, it even has a knight as one of the main characters. :D

ps: Does anyone have any experience playing PS One games on a PSP?

I've been thinking about picking up a PSP for the purpose of playing through some PS One titles.

Does any of the games have anything to do with each other, or are they all seperate stories? Besides of course X-2 and XII-2.

I know that it is possible to play FF5-9 and Tactics on the psp, not sure if the performance is any different than on the ps3.

As far as I know each Final Fantasy game has stand-alone story, the exception being Final Fantasy X-2.

no none of them have anything to do with eachother, as for "medieval fantasy" like you said, i suggest 1-6 for medieval fantasy..7 is the best ff imo, 8,9,10 great 10-2 sucks, 11 online, 12 not bad 13 boring..sum it up for ya play 1-10 all amazing preferably in that order

My personal favorite is FFIX, but my sympathy stems a bit from understanding all the nuances and easter eggs thrown-in from all the older installments. FFIX is as much a tribute to the series as it is its own game which makes it wonderfully unique. Still very enjoyable regardless, one of my favorite games ever.

If FFIX turns out to not be your thing, go with FFX or FFXII.

Honestly, you can't go wrong anywhere. Everyone has their fav., but there's no 'must have' ff to play first. They're all unique in their own terms. If you're looking for more medieval, you may want to look into FF IV.

I've never played III, V, or VI but I plan on getting Vand VI from the psn since they are up for purchase. I would agree though that IX would be your best bet for mid evil themes and its really fun. It doesn't get the respect it deserves by some gamers but theart style, game play, and graphics are amazing. XI is a mid evil theme too but as mentioned it is online but if you think you have the time then I would check it out, XI is my favorite FF. So I would say start with IX and if you want more mid evil themes then go with I-VI. If you do start with VII that is fine, it is a good game. I would say don't start with VIII, XII, or XIII because VIII is a good game but just not starting material in my opinion. XII was so so, it had an interesting feel but again not starting material. XIII plays different and was made for a different audience. It had some good things, some bad things but if you start with XIII and don't like it I feel you wouldn't want to give the other games a chance. XIV is also mid evil but lets not go there lol.

They're great for all the games except the FPS games, which take some finess in the button mapping to pull off - I have a mapping that works for the Medal of Honor games if you need it. But if you're playing RPGs, you'll be very pleased. I have a ton of PSOne games on my PSP (legally downloaded from PSN), and I love the PSP for that expressed purpose; To play PSOne games on the go or in front of a movie.

:)

As for which FF game, I vote FFVIII instead of VII, but that's me.

FFX is still my all time fave FF and favorite all time game period. Word around the campfire is that it is getting an HD remake for PS3, so that'll be pretty awesome.

I don't think I've ever played a FPS game on the PS.

I'd mainly use it to play RPGs so I'm glad to hear it works fine for that.

I can totally see myself doing that.

I really liked FFXII on the PS2. Loved the characters, and the gambit system which was at the heart of the gameplay was the sort of thing that kept me learning and thinking throughout the entire 100 hours I played it. Tons of great environments as well.

Yup SE already announced it a few months ago. My guess is that it will probably come out around fall or winter next year. That way SE has time to realese FFXIII-2 in January and sell some DLC lol.

FFIX is a great starting game. My only complaints are random battles and it being easy.

Try Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings on the DS, that game's pretty fun and easy to get into. The games genre is RTS/RPG. But if you're looking at the main series that's medieval like, I'd suggest FFIV DS version definitely, with the CG and voice acting which makes the game more intriguing. Cecil and Kain are the two baddest knights in RPG :) Glad your taking interest into the series I practically grew up with.

Gambit was great! I liked the license board system as well. However, my favourite thing about FFXII was the feeling that you share the same world of Ivalice with a great game such as Vagrant Story. I never got over the fact that a sequel wasn't made, and occasional mentioning of places and things that I knew from Vagrant Story just added to the fact that I enjoyed FFXII so much. Other than XII, my favourite is IX, being the first FF I played - as mentioned above: a great looking steampunk adventure with loveable characters.

FFVII technology is shown as bad, killing the planet, and it's not there that much in the whole game (maybe less than 10%), most of the time you're on a map with prairies and forests fighting monsters with swords and magic, except Barrett who has a gun arm

FFIX is medieval fantasy, and I found the characters more loveable, the skill/magic system is very good too (unlike FFX and FFXIII who are similar in mediocrity)

I know "Final Fantasy" is very known and widespread, but Suikoden is very good too, and with much more human stories and characters

Thats a really crappy reason not to play Final Fantasy VII. Its seriously the best in the series. Also, sorry but all the other good FF games are industrial, age of steel and steam, etc.

Just got a PSone for cheap and have FFIX on order!

Thanks for the recommendations, I will definately try FF7. I just wanted a medieval feeling fantasy for the first one I played.

I thought 8,12 & 13 were pretty weak, but the rest are awesome. I'd definitely suggest ff7 the only real steampunk type feeling is in a couple towns the rest of the game is out in towers, caves, castles, valleys, snow fields.... all in all a pretty varied world. ff4 (or 2 on the snes) was a great 2d ff and one of my favorites, its not really steampunk with only a little bit of technology in the game.

Have you ever considered dragonquest? that series is based more around european medievel type setting.
