So today I got a PS3 along with Metal Gear Solid 4. Its all tons of fun, but I have some worries and questions. Firstly, its seems I can't sign up for PSN, but it seems others are having the same issue with PSN related functions so I won't worry too much about that.

Another question I have is about the risk of overheating. I have the new 120gb slim version and have it set up with about the same room as with my 360, which hasn't had any issues, (several inches for the vents and not stacked on any other electronics) is there a risk of overheating morethan usual?

Lastly, I have heard about issues with the recent firmware updates. One that caught my eye was that certain blu-ray movies won't work, specifically newer ones. Has this been addressed in firmware updates or with newer PS3s? Thank you very much for any advice.

The older models are more prone to problems, so you're good, and PSN is having another maintenance today.

PSN has been under some maintenance today, be patient, you'll get in soon.

On the subject of overheating, you should never have a problem there as long a you give your PS3 enough space.

Problems with firmware updates seem to be pretty rare so don't worry, as for Blu-ray movies, I've never had a problem and I watch 1 to 2 a week. There may come a point when you do have a problem with one, but a firmware update or Blu-ray data update would soon sort that out.

Enjoy you PS3

First off welcome to the dark side, that means welcome to the PS3. To answer your questions:

  1. PSN is down for some work I believe, it should be back up shortly
  2. PS slim might get hotter than the older models but you will not see it explode or anything
  3. Firmware update problems happen but not A LOT.

If you need anymore info check out the PS3 Faq

I have2 MGS4 PS3 80gbs and had only minor problems with overheating(the fan blowing harder than normala nd no issues with freezing or anything effecting my gameplay)this summer but that was only due to long use with no AC on. As long as you keep it cool, well ventilated and you have a newer model you shouldn't have an issue. I have never had an issue with a firmware updates. Also, I'm at work but I guess as other people have mentioned PSN is down for maint.

Alrighty, thanks for the tips. @Sonic, I'm thinking of picking up the first Uncharted and Killzone 2, and then later on Uncharted 2 and may be GoW collection. Those are just the ones on my mind at the moment. However, MGS 4 really has my attention now.

I have a launch 60g(upgraded to 250)I haven't had any issues since I had it, so the problem issue can go either way.

I have a 60 gig I got shortly after the US release and it has been on 24/7 for most of it's life without a problem of any kind.

Ahh, Metal Gear Solid 4. All I can say is that you're in for an amazing game. :)
