if you're new to RPG, I'd recommend staying away from Crisis Core first, since it doesn't incorporate RPG elements of a traditional RPG and how it really should be. Go get something like Jeanne D'arc of Final Fantasy Tactics: War of Lions.

I concur, Final Fantasy Crisis Core is an Action RPG, it still has the customization things as well, for a First timer for an RPG, Crisis Core is a great way to get started. On the other hand, War of the Lions and Jeanne D'Arc are more complex RPGs. Get the anniversary edition of Final Fantasy 1 if you want to start well, at the start.

Games like Jeanne D'Arc are tactics games. And I'd doubt you'll like tactics games. So those type of games are not the ideal games to play if you wanna get into RPGs. I'd say the best game to get into for RPGs would be the Final Fantasys for the PS1 (ie, 7 or 9) or heck even FF X for the PS2. The older Final Fantasy like 1 and 2 are pretty archaic, so you might not like them either. But try to get those I recommended.

If you can, try to get this gem of a game. Its on the SNES though and the game itself will cost a fortune. That game is Chrono Trigger.

Try checking out those games above, or if you want, get Crisis Core. Its a pretty good game made accessible for beginners. The only thing you might find confusing might be the Materia Fusion, but you can use a guide to help you with that.

It may be tactics game, but it's just an additional component to the RPG mechanics, it's more similar to the true implementation of an RPG. Crisis Core falls more on action and you might be frustrated as to having NO CONTROL when you can dish out limit breaks (aka your special/ultimate attacks) and leave them off to "chance." Leveling up is NOT random though, thank God. I am shocked at people giving Crisis Core a perfect score when it obviously failed miserably on the battle system (aka the DMW). Don't get me wrong I like the FF franchise, but I know well when something's wrong.

You have very limited choices for the psp, but the remakes of Final Fantasy 1 & 2 are the most accurate traditional RPG for it, so you might want to get your hands on those first.

FFVII CC is an action rpg. I think this is OK. In fact I don't see many rpg games on PSP. If you can read Japanese Tales of destiny 2 would be a nice chose.

War of the Lions is the best game of all on PSP. But it is an SRPG but not a simply RPG.It you would like to try tradional rpgs I will have to introduce Final Fantasy 1+2. They are not a bit complex so in other words kinda boring.....

If you would like to try FF7CC..I must say it's the best choice

I never said it wasn't an RPG, it's just MORE of an action game if you compare it to traditional RPGs. FFTactics, Jeanne D'arc and Crisis Core are all RPGs, only different. What I'm saying is, the thread owner is new to RPG, it would be better to start off with something that's closely related to the traditional RPG and holds a more concrete similarity to the traditional RPGs like Final Fantasy 1 & 2.

An important component is the PARTY SYSTEM where you control a band of heroes with your healer, fighter, wizard, etc. Tactics holds true to this unlike Crisis Core and also the variety of choices, the options in these games are more wider that Crisis Core. I'm not saying it's bad, but you know, every one has to experience the party system once in their RPG life, and even in the D&D franchise, it's more fun to play with a party.

So if you truly want to experience RPG, go for the ones nearest to the genre. Choices are limited on the PSP though. So, Final Fantasy 1 & 2 for the purest form or try renting Jeanne D'arc, Crisis Core, FFTactics and see what you like best.
