I was just browsing an electronics store catalogue and somehow, I was very suddenly struck by the urge to buy a PSP -- I'm very budget minded, and yet the 200 CAD price doesn't seem so bad (was there a price drop? what was the launch price?) compared to the 150 CAD DS Lite. There's quite a few quirky, cool-looking titles (LocoRoco, WTF) and a few solid ones (MGS Portable Ops, Valkyrie Profile, Lumines). The potential for homebrew seems interesting, too, but the prospect of screwing up and ending up with a 200 dollar paperweight is pretty scary. I really haven't been paying much attention to the platform until just now... but what do you guys think? Is it a good time to invest in a PSP? How's the battery life? How well does it play video (I'm thinking anime/DVD rips on morning commutes)? Any promising titles on the horizon? Oh, and as for those darn pricey Sony brand PSP memory sticks / extra batteries, how well do third party ones work? I'm seeing 1 GB memory sticks go for 10 bucks on eBay -- how legit is that?

Well, I think that PSPs are great, and that portable gamers should have one. I got mine off ebay for 250 (CDN :) ) and 200 is a lot better, so ya, get one. And get an unpatched copy of GTA : LCS to downgrade it too...

Oh, and about the memory sticks, got to cheapassgamer.com, they usually have some good advice. ( An amount of the ones on Ebay could be fake ones)

In my honest opinion, a DS lite would serve better for younger gamers who like flashy pictures, touching stuff and goofy cartoons. A PSP would not keep a kid below 8 as happy as a DS would. For long term, mulitasking purposes for the teen gamer a PSP is the one. As for third party memory sticks, they work brilliant. Better yet, get a fake one. I have a fake 4gb memory stick Hi Speed Pro Duo which has 3.8 gbh memory and has been working great for the last 7 months, only for 25 pounds. You'll defenitely need one for homebrew. As for homebrew, all I can say is:- PSP + Homebrew = GAMER'S BLISS Can you play N64 or PS1 games on DS... No you can't!

Okay, awesome. So how viable is the device as a video player? If I wanted to use the PSP every day, say, on a boring bus commute in the morning to watch anime or content ripped from DVDs (I'm not planning to invest in any UMD movies) -- how well does that work? Will I have any problems with the PSPs screen aspect ratio or battery life? Anybody here use their PSP as their main video viewer?

you can use the psp as a video player but you need to download psp video 9 to convert the files into the format that the psp can read.  If your going to put whole episodes of shows and movies on there then you might want to get a big memory stick like 4GB if you want a lot.

you may have problems hearing it, but that can be easily enough solved by a good pair of noise canceling headphones.  There aren't really any other problems, in the respect of watching vids.
