I've always wanted a psp, but I could never justify buying one because I have nowhere to use it. I don't travel that much, and I don't use any sort of public transportation (bus, train) to get to work, so I see no reason to carry something like that around all the time.

Now if the NGP turns out to be the all in one device I've been dreaming of, which I don't see what is stopping it, it will have to have a phone built in. I want a phone, gaming system, music/movie player powerhouse, and as of now, the NGP is all of those except the phone. By incorporating the phone into the device, you turn it into something I HAVE to carry, not just something I would like to carry.

The current sku they are showingis too big to be carried in my pocket, thats why I was hoping it was going to be a slider like the psp go or the leaked photos that came out earlier. And havinga phone inside would be a solution for the 3G connectivity, which currently is in the air whether its going to be free or not.

Also, the price! Who knows how much the NGP will cost. It has to be at least $250, like the 3ds, but with the amount of hardware, my bet is closer to $350 or more. If it is sold as a phone, you could get it for cheaper with a contract as well.

The NGP is shaping up to be a beautiful piece of tech, but without the phone, I see no reason for me to buy one. Here's to hoping

well i guess you wont be buying one, pretty silly reason.

i know people who dont travel and have one still idk thats a pretty ignorant reason not to buy one (not trying to be mean)

it will cost a hell of alot il wait to get one used alot later. i agree with you there

The NGP phone would be huge considering the size of the NGP lol.

Adding a phone would just be overkill, but perhaps they'll include another sku for people who want that...highly doubtful though, that's why they have the PlaystationPhone.

I sort of agree with the original poster. I don't think phone features should be forced on us, but if there's a microphone and a headphone port, why not? I'd consider actually paying that 3G fee if I didn't have to pay for a separate phone on top of that.

Personally, I would NOT want the NGP to be combined with a phone. It's too much IMO.

If you want a phone + PSP, then you're going to have to stick around until Sony eventually releases the PlayStation Phone.

Why is it too much? If all the right technologies are there, why not have it as an option at the very least? A few people will want it, most won't. Worst case it's a letdown, and it fails. It's not as if it's a big risk, and it shouldn't interfere with the other features of the device.

Well for me, I already have a phone and I'm really not interested in getting another one.

Also if they turned the NGP into a phone, you'd be holding that brick up to your face to talk to people. How uncomfortable would that be?

But put yourself in my shoes. I don't have a phone. I'd like to get one someday, but I also want a PSP2. If the if the NGP's 3G model could double as a phone, it'd give me a way to get both in one package. Supposing it doesn't affect you in any way, since you're happy with your phone, would you really have a problem with others using it as a phone?

And it's not a "brick", it's just the same shape as a candy bar phone, only a little bigger and heavier. It's just a possibility, for those that would want it. It's merely that I'm pointing out how effortlessly Sony could implement phone features, with a couple of modifications to the device's microphone location and firmware, it could easily be done, and since you may be paying for expensive 3G anyway, why not have the option available?

I just don't understand why it bothers YOU. :P

Makes some sense,, if people are willing to pay for such.. they should probably create another kit other than 3g and wifi only. But, who'd get the Xperia Play then? Maybe they'll let this "era" pass and make that phone feature for the 2nd or 3rd iteration of the NGP, like how PSP 3000 got a mic and skype features. I bet the modding community will "create" such features if Sony won't. I daresay they'd make a monitor out feature as well.

An NGP would look more awkward held up to your ear than an N-Gage.

Even ignoring that point, personally I wouldn't want it to be a phone. Phone functionality would make it more expensive... At least out of contract. If you could even get one out of contract. US cellular providers often won't let you. And what if it's exclusive to one carrier?

Other than that don't you require some added hardware and features for making a good phone like noise/static cancellation/improvements and mic improvements? And running more tests on the system?

Then again if it's as expensive as that, it'll be your typical smart phone price plan,, so it's nothing really new.

If the holding the device near your ear is akward, there's stuff called bluetooth headsets and wired headsets. Still, in emergency cases, if those "nipples" don't retract, it'll be irritating.

to the OP, you know PSP has Skype right? I assume the NGP will have Skype with video chat. thats about as good as it will get.

but really i bet the battery in the NGP wont be powerful enough to stay on all day like a phone does. Its a gaming device meant to be on to play games, then you turn it off. and have you seen how big it is? Its not something you can carry around with you like a phone. Expecting the NGP to have a phone is almost as far fetched as expecting the 3DS to have a phone too..... it's probably not going to happen. If you want a phone that plays games, get an Iphone or Android. But dont be shocked that the games are shallow and ugly in comparison.

I personally will buy after the price of the NGP comes down and there's a good strong library of games available for it. Hopefully it will allow BC on it for PSP and PS1 games downloaded from the Playstation store, that would be a strong selling point for me. and remote play using a ps3 would be nice too.

It doesn't really matter for me, but I suppose if it was via bluetooth, that would be cool, especially if you could do camera chat.

i was quite taken aback when i heard the initial rumours that PSP2 is gonna be a smart phone, so i'm actually very glad that it won't be the case. a product risks losing its identity and appeal if it tries to be a jack-of-all-trade, not to mention the technical issues it might lead to, such as bulkiness and bad ergonomics. with wi-fi or 3G connection and touch screen and backward compatibility, NGP is already offering more than i ask for. can't wait.

just get an xperia play since there will be playstation suite on android phones you can get your gaming fix so to speak with psp go like controls and all the smart phone functionality you would want in an all-in-one device.

I simply don't get some of you. How hard would it be for them to add phone functionality to the NGP? I really have no clue. maybe you guys are all mobile phone engineers and have some inside info that I don't, but I really doubt its that costly or would add anymore size to the device.

And if you already have a phone...GREAT! I have one too. I have a droid, and I like it, but around the time this comes out, I have an upgrade ready, and I would buy it and REPLACE my phone with this. And since its android based, allofmy apps would transfer eventually.Maybe some of you have had good experience with Sony phones, but I have never had one or haven't heard anything good about them. I actually want to the Sony Aino when it came out, for it PS3 connectivity, but I couldn't find one anywhere so I got a droid. As for Iphones, I don't like apple, and getting my gaming fix with Angry Birds isn't going to happen. Plus adding phone support would be an attack on Apple as well as Nintendo, they could take money from both of them.

Yes the giant version of the NGP there are showing now would be awkward to hold to your face, kinda like a cordless phone...ewwww. But if you would've ready what I said, I mentioned that would be a problem, more because it wouldn't fit in your pocket, and I said the leaked images that came out before they formally announced the NGP were of a slider form factor. And all the devs that already have the NGP say its a slider! And for the awkward point, I rarely make calls anymore; mostly I just text, so I would have no problem with that. And if it was a slider, the NGP would basically look like a giant screen...much like most smartphones out currently, and people don't seem to have a problem holding those to their faces.

If you don't want an NGP with a phone, that's fine, but I do. This thing is going to be expensive, and have a phone inside would cut the price (with a contract) and would account for the 3G, which is probably going to cost you, in one way or another.

It is currently called the NGP, what identity is there? The psp has done well in sales, but it is the black sheep of the handheld market. Why didn't they call it psp2? My guess is they want to rebrand it so they can start fresh.

I'm not talking on my phone all day long, and if I'm at work I'm not playing games, except on break, so it wouldn't be powering anymore that what my phone currently does anyway. And I have a charger at work...just in case

can I text with skype?

Except the 3DS is clearly geared towards children, where this is not. Hell, even the 3DS is going to be too expensive for kids.

Any dev that talks of a slider is most likely referring to the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. AKA the "PlayStation Phone". This is a completely different device. Basically it's Android phone, having specs comparable to other high end Android phones, with a slide out gamepad.

You have seen the photos that were leaked right? Now I am not an insider by any means, I'm just a normal dude, but what one of the tech guys on IGN said was that his trusted source said that the psp2 would be a slider, and when Sony announced the NGP and showed the bigger psp look-a-like, he went back to his source and like "what the hell?" The source said "I don't know what to tell you, all the dev kits that are out now are sliders"

I know the difference between NGP and Xperia

The average smart phone releasing today sells around 500-600 dollars. The PSP2 has about 4x the specs that the best phones have today. Now lets add the phone in. You would be lookign at a retail cost of at least 900 bucks. 300-400 subsidized. This thing is way to large for a phone. But you bring up the crux of the issue OP.. Is Sony nuts for going this route? All the competition.. and cheap games on Android and Iphone.. .99 cents-3.00$ .. as opposed to 30-50 bucks on the NGP. Plus the cost of the system which won't be cheap. They are obviously not marketing this device to children. This is a crazy adult toy. I want it.. but just sayin.. I think Sony is crazy. I want them to succeed but they wont unless this device does more than games. I would say an Ipad like device that specializes in games. If thats there selling angle I think they can succeed with that. Maybe.

I agree, this thing is going to be crazy expensive, so that's why I think it needs all the functionality it can get. I almost think they are going for an Ipad like device, but personally I'm not really interested in that. Even if they had phone support inside, it would be cool if you could choose whether or not to activate it.
