"We weren't able to get him to budge on the issue of the NGP's price, but we did ask him to opine on the Nintendo 3DS's $250 tag. Instead of offering friendly competitive jabs, he said only, "I think if the quality's there, then the people will find a way to buy it, within reason... I think that if you could create content that consumers sees compelling, they'll find money that they didn't think they had." A bit too reminiscent of former boss Ken Kutaragi's old adages, but hey, it's not like we expected a sub-$300 sticker, anyway."

For all those that find the prices too expensive, you've got to step back and take a look at what you're getting for 250 plus.

-Nice, big screen, OLED to boot, with incredible contrast

-Huge performance

-Two cameras and a mic

-Two touch pads

-motion controls(more advanced than ever for a portable device)

-Optional 3G

What we're getting here is the most advanced portable device ever seen- besides the category of laptop computers, but even those don't have many of the technologies seen in the NGP. And even if it costs over $500, I think that'd be little less than it's worth.

I can completely accept anything above and beyond $300, simply because I'm mindful of what I'm getting.

Yes, the spec sheet is absolutely mind blowing..I just am thinking of competition..I truly believe Sony wants people to say when they go to get a 3DS "But I could pay the extra 50$ and get...this" but I'll guess we'll wait and see

if there are multiple sku's i'd say the base model would run about $300, and 3G units toward $349.99, and we know how gamestop likes to force bundles on us, so we might be looking at $500s with the system and a few options bundled.

Look, I'm sorry, but did Sony learn anything from the PS3 and PSP? Why do they think they're last in sales? If it's above $300, I'm not buying it and neither will a lot of people.

Yeah, they learned they need to move ahead with technology, even if it's costly. Everything comes at a price, even awesomeness. :P

I will get this maybe not right away at launch due to the angry mobs out just to get there hands on it first but Ill get mine. I dont care what is said or what sells more 3DS is gonna get blown out of the water by the PSP2. Right now 3DS fans are clinging to the fact that they think the PSP2 doesnt have games but once it turns out it does have the games to support it goodnight DS.

No offense, but this sounds disturbingly similar to the excuse made for the PS3's initial price tag. Once again I must point out that it is only a "bargain" for those who actually want all those features.

I think that's a concern to be had. The graphics for this system is sub-PS3 and I don't know if many developers would be able to produce many games for the system since the development costs would also dramatically rise.

That's a nice philosophy you've got there, but Sony is a business and not everyone in the world is rich. In order for them to stay in the gaming market, they need to actually SELL the things they're dishing out. I'm not saying they need to remove all of their wonderful technology, but they need to find the balance between awesome technology and good pricing. I'm paying $300 for it. If that means waiting a while for the price to come down from something ridiculous, then so be it.

But that's the thing: not everyone wanted a blu-ray player. At least at that time. For those who merely desired a game console, the PS3 seemed ridiculously overpriced.

yes, but the ps3 turned out to be much better than the origional xbox.... you have to realize thats the point of putting the blue ray in the ps3 or any other product, they are marketing to more people...trust me people will pay anything to get the item...look at cell phones...there like 600 dolars no contract! people buy them.

I think you're forgetting how quickly the PS3's price fell. Sony was still losing a lot on each console at the time. This wouldn't have happened if sales hadn't been so sluggish. Clearly Blu-ray was not enough of a selling point.

I don't know too many people, at least in the US, who buy their smart phones out of contract.

i said this before, but it would be amazingly beneficial to Sony and the consumer, if they offer a version of the Psp2/NGP at a discount (like 199 or less) with a data plan service agreement through a mobile provider. Sony would get the price lower and attract more customers and those who planed on using 3G anyway get a chunk taken off their initial investment.

come on guys pls be serious...300-350 is tooooooo much for what u get...with that kinda money you can buy a ps3 slim 320gb bundle which is so much worth it if u consider what u get...i think that 200-250 is the best price and will make the market more competitive with the 3ds to cost around 300....

There's no way it's going to be less than $300 I know that much. The tech that's in this, they can't afford to give it away for $200...

Sony said to Game Informer "It's not going to be $599."

Well at least we know that much.

QWERTYCommander
Interesting, so what we know for sure now: It will be between $250 and $600. Honestly, though, that's not a suprise, $600 is a bit overboard.

I'd pay a high premium, but theres a big issue. No umd, meaning no retail sales, and you have to use the psn store? Oh god. Downloading nearly a gig+ isn't the easiest thing in the world. On a normal 2 mbps connection, it takes about 7 hours to download a gig. Holy god. And people thats on a limited internet access plan, screwed.

Could sony actually sell games, each coming on their own huge memory stick? Then again, i guess nintendo does it. A 2gig sd card stick is 10$ in stores. Every game to come on one?

I'm not paying over 350$ for something, thats going to take me over 4+ hours to download 1 high sized game.

Over 5yrs now and the psp price slightly down from it's launch price. I bet that they kept the price high to make money to put toward developing ngp. I think that psp's price will drops within the launch window of ngp if not earlier.

Heh, we're not talking about a tiny business here, we're talking about Sony, they have more than enough money to develop the NGP, they just kept it high because they want money. Never forget that no matter how cool their products are, all they want is your money. :P

games are confimed to be both retail on some type of cartridge format as well as download from the store. there will be some stuff that is download only but it's not the PSPgo. there will be a physical medium.

$400 minimum

These high end smartphones are $400 off contract, NGP kills em.

I'm going to pre-order mine today at Gamestop.

those $400 smart phones are selling for a profit. Sony can, and should, sell the hardware at a loss early on, and make it up later in software sales. im thinking $350 for the 3G version, $300 for non-3G (could be $400/$350 though, but that's MAX if they want them to actually sell).

I think the majority of people believe it should be at this price, if Sony is SMART..and actually listened to user feedback, they should see this at the selling price that people are willing to pay for. A question I do have is..wouldn't it make more sense to sell systems at a loss if it appeals to more customers (more sales) than sell it without a loss at a price customers don't want (less sales)? just wondering

My guess is the price is going to be £299 and that is a price I am willing to pay, my guess for NA will be $299-$350.

i'm still guessing a base model without 3G would be about $299.99, and with 3G, $349.99.

Likely if it has to have a subscription (aka not like an amazon kindle set up) it will be 350$. By the way the person interviewed himself did not say this it was the guy analyzing what the person said, said. I will buy this console at 300$ honestly. I think it will actually be worth it too.

Look, I'm sorry, but did Sony learn anything from the PS3 and PSP? Why do they think they're last in sales? If it's above $300, I'm not buying it and neither will a lot of people.

RACiEP

This and the fact in the UK it wont be a real world conversion of $ into £ so if for example it is $300 it will end up being £300

if there are multiple sku's i'd say the base model would run about $300, and 3G units toward $349.99, and we know how gamestop likes to force bundles on us, so we might be looking at $500s with the system and a few options bundled.

sounds like I'll finally be getting a job..cause i have a reason to -_- haha

Sony doesn't want you to have just 1 job! They want you to have a 2nd job too!

I'm willing to only to pay up to $350.If it is higher I will just wait for a price drop.
