Well no, I don't need to know anything about resolutions I'm fairly familiar with them. .the question is what is if there is 1080i Support on Skyrim like the packaging indicates or not. The game looks gorgeous on PS3 by the way, does anyone know if the 720P output gets an anti aliasing bonus of any sort? I remember hearing something like that a while back.Mancid_Rilk
Its not resolutions...:? Its the technology used to display them.
At best, it would get 2x AA at 720p and none at 1080i. The consoles just cant do anymore.
The reason most games on PS3 dont run in 1080 is because of RAM limits. And the few that do are most likely upscaled. Same with the 360. That console though force upscales everything so your TV thinks it is recieving a 1080 signal, when if you look at the actual resolution it is not 1080. Both consoles are limited by their 512MB ram and I think it is a rather silly oversight on Sony and Microsoft to have put so little memory into their systems.
Looking at PC graphics cards, try to get a 512MB card to run a game at 1920x1080. Its just not going to happen. The FPS will be terrible, if the card even supports that resolution. Even 1GB cards have problems at 1080.
i have it for ps3 and the back of the box say 480p, 720p, and 1080i ONLY. no 1080p. but i cant even get 1080i working. i change my display settings and it will start up in standard def. idk why. if someone know how to fix this please help.
I had read somewhere that the 360 gets "free" 4x AA built into the chipset or upscaler, not sure if that's only in 720P or not though. I know the PS3 gets some kind of AA buff, In any case I've been slightly disappointed that the PS3 hardware hasn't been utilized better, in theory it's more powerful than the 360 but more often than not you can't tell a difference between the two or the 360 port looks better. There's no getting around that any 1080 resolution whether it be interlaced or progressive puts more than twice as many pixels on the screen than 720P. Do the math 1280x720=922,880 pixels vs 1920x1080 equaling 2,073,600 pixels giving you a higher pixel density and thus a better image. There is no technology or trick that can work around the simple multiplication. Scaled or not, I'd like to see 1080 resolution and the Skyrim packaging clearly states it's 1080i capable, so the big question once again. . How do you get the PS3 version of Skyrim to output in 1080.Mancid_Rilk
Upscaled 1080P != native 1080P. You are right though, there is no technology or trick to work around the simple fact the game is 720P and not 1080P. That applies to both platforms BTW, upscaling is just a "trick", it is not changing the native resolution of the game nor does it improve the image in any way.

As to the native resolutions yes. Current consoles just can't push that resolution save for the least demanding games (basically arcade games). Rayman Origins apparantly will be 1080P/60FPS, but it's probably not terribly demanding being basically an animated 2D sidescroller. Actually that's probably the perfect type of game for consoles to be pushing 1080P/60fps on natively.
As to the OP question about UPSCALING, the 360 has an actual piece of hardware that does "upscaling". Basically it has a dedicated chip.The chip is basically the same thing you might find in a basic upscaling DVD player.However upscaling really doesn't change the look of the game and certainly doesn't overcome the 720P (or less) native resolution. I suppose I would prefer it if the PS3 also had standard upscaling on *ALL* games, but I realize it really doesn't change the actual look of the game because the native resolution is still hardware limited. You will notice that it's not just Skyrim that is 720P, even many of the best Sony exclusives are played on their native resolutions and don't get upscaled. On most TV's, this is probably for the best anyway.
by the way, ign.com and other sites already showing side by side videos and what not, ps3 version is suppose to be wayy better then the other system....which is a surprise, its usually the other way around.JoKeR_421

My 3 year old mid range Radeon 4850 512mb ran most all of my games at 1920x1080 @60hz with 8x AA and 16xAnis. Filtering including 2011 titles. I know, but that guy was claiming that desktop GPUs had a hard time running 1080, when as far back as 3-4 years ago it was no problem, granted the PS3 hardware is 5 years old. Someone said you can "force" 1080 on Skyrim, how can you do that? I mean it makes sense since the box clearly states 1080 resolution.Your HDTV will play the game in the best resolution automatically so if I was you, I wouldn't try to find a way to force it into a higher resolution. If there is such a way, of course. I can only see problems arising. But i agree that most of the game this generation have had some terrible resolutions. Did you know BF3 isn't even running at 720p on consoles? Ridicilous. No wonder it doesn't hold a candle to the PC versions. arsenal1111
Battlefield runs at 702p, so it really isn't that big of a deal, basically just a few lines on the bottom and top of the screen that you can't even notice (compared to native 720P anyway).
Some games run at 644p, Black Ops PS3 I think was one of the worst, it runs at a mere 544p. Oh and the irony is that Blacks Ops supports the PS3 upscaling, so your TV will tell you it's 1080P even though the game is only 544p native. :lol:

PC graphics cards have GDDR5 RAM which is slower than the RAM which us used in Console GPU's whivch is XLDR,
ps. The ps3 has 256mb of XLDR RAM not 512.
Has anyone had or heard of a problem with Skyrim where if you're using hdmi cables, once the game switches to 720p, that there is green static overlaying the images? I just got a brand new hdmi cable and the ps3 homescreen in 1080p is crystal, but when the game starts and switches to 720, there's all this green static that ruins the experience. Had to go to the freakin a/v 480 cables which sucks but it's the only way I can play.
Any help or knowledge would be epic at this point. Not even Sony knew what to do nor any other forum known to man.
