After Killzone 2, is there any other PS3 first-person shooter really needed?

Lets see, we have:

  • Battlefield: Bad Company
  • Killzone 2
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
  • Call of Duty: World at War
  • Call of Duty: 3
  • Resistance: Fall of Man
  • Resistance 2
  • Unreal Tournament III
  • The Orange Box
  • F.E.A.R 2: Project Origin
  • Far Cry 2
  • TimeShift

Is there really a need for more?

All I need is three.

Unreal Tournament 3 - Fast paced, Frag-Fest

Resistance 2 - Alien Vs. Human Shooter

Killzone 2 - Tactical-Squad based shooter

What's your take on the over-saturation of the First-Person Shooter genre?

Great shooters are always welcome. Before or after Killzone 2. Let's not forget, Killzone 2 is just another one of those great shooters. :P

Like how fighting games once dominated the industry, I'm sure that this FPS-craze will pass. The only thing is, FPS games are a sure-fire way of making money. First-person? Big guns? Lots of action? It's automatically SOLD to the average American gamer. Who knows, maybe someone will make a new genre of video games that will take the industry by storm.

That really made me think. Do prominant game genres go in cycles like fashions do? If so, I want a return of the turn-based RPGs. :P

The key word there needed. A lot of stuff in today's entertainment industry (movies, games, music, etc.) is a bunch of rehashes, but they'll keep shippin the stuff out until it stops making money.

the entire shooter genre been dead for a long time no ones really made any stride or done anything different with it in a long long time and were basically getting the same shooter repackaged with better graphics or a different storyline. personally i find shooter genre to be the most shallow genre all about graphics and nothing else. not that theres anything wrong with that if a pretty version of a game you played countless times before is what u find enjoyable whats wrong with that. i do mean that seriously, though i don't think you can make the argument that shooters have done anything different for the past 3 years, other then improved graphics. in my opinion if they want to focus on one thing in shooters to improve it should be A.I. its just getting more and more dumbed down. i don't mean its easy i just mean its too predictable too scripted very few games have A.I. that makes you feel like ur actually fighting against another human, that the enemies actually thinking and using some form of logic. this for me kills most shooter no matter how good or realisitc they look if the enemies are brain dead its just brings down the realism of the whole game, at least for me. theres very little difference between most of the games you listed, and in some cases some of the games look remarkable similar to one another and play very much alike. i think the problem is we have very little diversity in shooters.

This won't happen again until our society turns their back to "quick action thrills".

Plus, only

  • Camelot
  • Square-Enix
  • Level 5
  • Game-Freak
  • Square-Soft
  • Bio-Ware
  • Bethesda(Not Too Sure)
  • Atlus

Make good RPG's (In My Own Opinion)

Edit: How the hell could I have forgotten Atlus?!

As long as a game is good, I don't really think it should matter what genre it is. The trouble is most FPS released these days just aren't very good or original, so the overall opinion of the genre has become pretty negetive. Personally I finally burned out on the genre after finishing Resistance 2. I was going to get Killzone 2 as my last FPS for a while, but after the (IMO) lacklustre demo I'm not so sure. The trouble is that they're mostly just the same experience but with a different skin, a little innovation certainly wouldn't hurt. We desperatley need another Half-Life esq landmark to reinvent the genre.

I think the FPS genre has gone to its limits in terms of technical improvements for now, I mean its not that easy to just think up of a new idea to make a battlefield seem different without taking out the essentials. We have, at this point, gotten very familiar to FPS, even if it has slow down time, realistic gun weight or realistic recoil or responsive guns. By now we know how an FPS should be for the simple reason that we have defined some of them as the right shooters, the better ones, so we look at them and just don't care about any other that come along with a different setting or theme. Because we have been playing all these great shooters and have been buying and supporting them for many years now. Other devs will try to catch our attention with their vision of what a shooter is by taking the broken parts of other generic shooters and fix them. That's why there are so many of them, its because they have been a trial and error cycle and that it what is making us act skeptical about future promising shooters. We fear they will be more of the same. The only thing that I think will improve over the years with the technology is the look of a game, even if it will be in 3D 2160p, the genre will always remain the same basic principle, aim and press a button to shoot, with added bells and whistles.

I say... I'm surprised with myself regarding how many shooters I've played this gen, and how many I still have on my list (granted KZ2, and codMW2 isn't a big list, but I already went through 5-6 shooters, it's quite a lot.) I really hate the massive saturation of FPS games in the industry, but at the same time I'm adding fuel to the fire. So, yes, I agree there should be less shooters released in the future, but I will also be the first in line for the shooters that I mentioned. Quite the self-inflicted paradigm; I really don't deserve a voice on this topic, I lost all credibility with my hypocrisy :P .

After Killzone 2, is there any other PS3 first-person shooter really needed?

Lets see, we have:

  • Battlefield: Bad Company
  • Killzone 2
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
  • Call of Duty: World at War
  • Call of Duty: 3
  • Resistance: Fall of Man
  • Resistance 2
  • Unreal Tournament III
  • The Orange Box
  • F.E.A.R 2: Project Origin
  • Far Cry 2
  • TimeShift

Is there really a need for more?

All I need is three.

Unreal Tournament 3 - Fast paced, Frag-Fest

Resistance 2 - Alien Vs. Human Shooter

Killzone 2 - Tactical-Squad based shooter

What's your take on the over-saturation of the First-Person Shooter genre?

samuraiguns

To answer your question, we don't want another FPS anytime soon. Seriously, I am sick of them. Give us more TPS like Uncharted and Metal Gear.

Personally I can't wait for KillZone 2, I haven't played a FPS in years, last really good one for me was F.E.A.R or Half Life 2...

The stories were facisinating and the graphics were top notch.

Innovation is always welcomed by gamers but I believe the gaming industry is set firmly in a mold on thisFPS thing. In these rough economic times I believe they do not want to take many chances in developing some unique games. We have a lot of remakes and continue the series games coming out in 2009. Lets hope that another rogue is out there in the game developing industry, like the team for LBP.

Personally, I think the real problem is the over-saturation of games, period. There's just too many! Personally, I would rather see all game devs take their time with their game, release it, support it with DLC or extensions for at least 3 years and THEN release another one.

I would also love to see devs release even more downloadable games. I can't have enough of those little gems like Flower, Noby Noby Boy, Fat Princess, Trine or even The Punisher: No Mercy or CellFactor: Psychokinetic Wars.

well i dont think there is a need for any new fps franchises now but i do think like cod, battle field, resistance, and killzone franchises should definitely keep making games (well if resistance and killzone can come up with something to keep the stories running so they can make new games) but other than that i dont think there is a need for new fps titles.

I agree with this. imo Uncharted is the only Shooter of recent that I liked, although KZ2 looks strong.

I want a return of more puzzle type games, mixed with RPGs. Like, Golden Sun TLA, but Action RPG like Fable or something. I loved GS, and am loving LBP, because of the puzzles. Action + puzzles is a surefire win. I especially like good music as well. So in short, I want to have lots of Zelda type games, but with a deep character progression system like non Min/Max Fallout 3 (when played normally, not book hunting)
