Some games run up to 720p and some run up to 1080i.
If you have a game that says it'll run higher than 720p but it only runs at 720p, then it's your PS3 settings.
Make sure you have an HDMI cable.
Im not sure but does the menu start in 1080p?Cause my 1080p 40 inch samsung diplays GT5 Prologue very beutifully using HDMI.If you use component then make sure you choose 1080p cause component isn't automatic.

Yes, I am using an HDMI...it was the best one they had in the store...It is the Monster Cable M1000HD cable, the one that supports 1080p as well as the 120hz that my TV has on it. Still not sure why my games are rendering in 720p though.OSJ-1987
thats what im using for my samsung 32 inch, monster cable, theyre the best, try to set your ps3 from the setting menu, maybe just click the 1080p instead clicking all of the options...
The same happens with me, one example is gta4, it says 1080p put when I play it, it only plays in 720p. Why? Im guessing since the actuall res of the game is just 640p (or something around there) and the 720 and 1080p are both upscaled, and my tv/ps3 simply chooses to then output it as close as possible to the original res. And no, you should not force the game to display in 1080p by turning off the 720p option in the display setting. Turn everything on and let the ps3/tv decide what's best to display.
damn, i wish i had an hdtv, although i dont have one, i know a soulution, maybe, when setting your hd resolutions it will say all the possible resolution, 1080p,1080i, 720p,..... make sure 1080p is marked, and it probably is, then unmark everything els, just leave 1080p mark, and try it
if it works, tell me is there a big difference from 720p and 1080p? i am about to buy one and i wanna no if i should wait a little longer tell i can afford a 1080p...
Well I just did a Google search and found out a way to get past it...not exactly the most convenient of ways, but still...I have to go into the display settings and under the options, de-select 720p as one of my options for resolution leaving the others checked. If I do this, then I can run my games in 1080p. Anyone know if there is a way around this?OSJ-1987
Huh, that was the way I was gonna mention. xD
No, unfortunately. Not that I know of.
On a side note... you got a Monster Cable? xD
Heh yeah...I had a Vizo too and I didn't like it so I took it back and got that Samsung 6 series...best thing I ever did. Even though it was about $500 more expensive, it is unparalleled in terms of quality vs. the Vizio.
The Monster cable helps out a lot as well. It's price was pretty steep but again, it was worth the money for the quality that I'm getting out of it. Anyway, hopefully sometime in the future, Sony will fix this so I don't have to go and check/uncheck lower or higher resolutions depending on what I'm playing or watching.
Ok, 1st of all, a $5 HDMI cable gives the same quality as a $100 HDMI cable.. You can google it if you don't believe me, and I also have a expensive and a cheap HDMI cable, and there is no difference.
2nd Why do you wan't to play Native 720p games in 1080p? Do you know that this causes frame rate problems? Sony says to leave games in 720p for optimized visuals and game play, if the game is 720p native. And the games you trying to upscale to 1080p aren't even 720p native. GTA 4 and CoD4 is in 600s.. Only real 1080p games on ps3 is GT5p, NBA 08, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma..
If your HDTV is 1080p and you are using an HDMI cable, you will find that the following games will run at 1080p resolution natively.
1. Metal Gear Solid 4
2. Gran Turismo 5 Prologue
3. Ninja Gaiden Sigma
MGS and GT5 are the cream of the crop when it comes to graphics. All other games are 720p native and can be scaled up to 1080p.
I'm sorry, I didn't read all of the post because I don't have enough time.
But if you don't have it solved by now, the problem is that sometimes the ps3 needs to be set for 1080p only, after I did it one time, I haven't had to do it anymore. Like with GTAIV, it kept coming up 720p and not 1080p.
Goto your XMB bar and select your display settings and manually unselect all options but 1080p. The two lowest resolutions cannot be unchecked, don't worry about that.
