. . . or rather the green -> yellow -> flashing red light of death. I've burned through 4 xboxs (largely cause the refurbs that gamestop gives are craptacular) but I had always been so cocksure that my devoted Sony would not desert me.

Sony offered me the GREAT deal of $200+ CND to repair, but that's insane. I think I found a local shop that will repair for about $80, so I should be gaming again soon.

No really point to this thread, just needed to vent.

Your call on going with an unofficial repair. Sony won't touch your PS3 if your cheap fix doesn't last.

I would quick fix it by following a vid on youtube and then trade it in and buy a new PS3... but that's just me...

I did one of those fixes from a shop in London and while it worked, the ps3 only lasted 2 months after that...now I'm rocking a slim though 8-)

May just be dust on the lens. Or perhaps overheating?

I would imagine so. This is based on the original manufacturer's warranty now, not one of the supplemental warranties you can buy at point of sale.

yea i know, i mean my 60gb ( thank god its still workin , almost 4 years lol) is still good, i have a slim 120gb which the warranty will end around xmas this year, so i figured wat the heck, why not extend it? so im going to wait till theres 2 to 3 weeks left and ill get the 2 year plan....cuz getting it now its kinda pointless. i wanna make sure im almost out of warranty that way my money will be well spent

It only takes effect after your manufacturer's warranty is up so you're fine either way.

Yeah i suppose Sony did create a very reliable machine this gen and don't see the need to ensue a huge budget repair service... still sucks when your PS3 breaks and you hear a cost of $200... worse for UK as it costs £200 for us but that would just make Sony bleed more if they did a repair service...

When i called sony because i had YLOD they said it would cost me 185$, i wanted to go tell them where they can stick it. Found someone who would repair it for 80, and even tho it's repaired now, i hardly use it, i bought a gaming pc instead, **** both 360 and ps3, faulty pieces of junk.

i accepted a long time ago (around the n64 era) that if you can keep an electronic device functioning for 2-3 years then its doing alright. its lame, but thats the way electronics work. they're built to fall apart (some more so than others)

My baby was an 80GB (seemingly) fully backwards compatible model - she will be missed.

I like the idea of fixing and trading it in. I think I'll try that and maybe get the move bundle. Still have the ps2 so that'll take care my old games.

Thanks for the info.

It would appear that YLOD is more or less an issue for the older models only.

If you've had it less than a year.
