If you don't know how to work with it comfortably, you'll just end up getting a huge headache and waste your time.

Linux is a clone of UNIX.  So just go buy a book about Linux or UNIX and you'll be set.  Is it hard to use?  Not if you understand UNIX, but hey if you come from a Windows world you'll have a good time learning how to use a computer again.

You go to a computer school but have never used Linux?  You at least should know how to use the shell, and basic shell commands for starters.

Apple's Mac OS X is another clone of UNIX.  If you have had any real experience with the OS X command line you should be fine with Linux, but like I say above if you aren't anything more than a glorifed Windows XP user (you really shouldn't say you have skills with computers then) you will need to learn everything again.
